Ok guys my boat dealer is out of business in Nixa, MO, Walts Boats and Motors. Where is the best place to get a water pump for my 50 HP 2 cycle Mercury and is it something easy that I can replace by myself? I have heard of places around Springfield charging as much as $125.00 per shop hour. What kind of info will I need to get the water pump? How offend should you change a water pump? Boat is a 2008 water pump never replaced.

Most are easy to change, unbolt the linkage under the motor head going down to the lower unit then unbolt the unit and slid it off the motor. The water pump itself is pretty simple to change , there are only a few parts to it. Good Luck.
Bigby with my luck there is nothing easy! But I watched a YouTube video on a 75 HP Mercury showing it done. The guy never unbolted any linkage under the motor head. Just unbolted the lower unit and undid about 4 bolts. Hey PW says she is making you guys Jello shots for fall camp!Quote:

I changed the water pump on an old 75 hp merc I had....by old, it was probably about an '88. Anyway....I thought I was reasonably handy with a wrench....you know....righty tighty and lefty loosy and all that. I learned one lesson....fork over a couple bucks and have that bad boy changed by someone who knows what they are doing. There are alot of things going on in there in terms of linkage and I swear I put it back together and took it apart about 30 times. I finally gave up, had a beverage or two and went at it the next day. I finally got it all back together and then the dang thing overheated on me anyway and torched a cylinder.

Tom I hear you! Thats what I worried about! Remember I am the nut case who has State Farm Insurance on my boat that replaces the lower unit!
Sevenfiftynine been there and done that on farm equipment! Be told at the farm equipment dealer hey you can do that! Then end up making 2 trips or more to the dealer who is 30 miles or more one way away from the farm. They seem to always forget to tell you that you need some special tool to undo one bolt!

Water pumps are pretty easy. Just Unbolt the foot and slide it off the driveshaft. The water pump housing is right there. Take the cover off of the housing and slide the old impeller off. Slide the new one one. New gasket then put the cover back on. Put the foot back on the drive shaft and bolt it down.

Just changed mine yesterday.Change it every year just for a piece of mind and its cheap to do. No linkage on a mercury just the bolts and mine has the water pee
hose to unscrew. Takes me about 45 min. tops just make sure the impellor vanes are curved in the housing the same way as the old one and your good to go.Mines a 225 but they should be the same or real close. Had 48.00 in parts.
I put a new impeller in my Merc every other season. If I ran in shallow water with mud or sand bottom it would be every year. Nothin to it....even when Hardhuntr is watching and asking 100 questions.
Thanks Krazy! pvchief1 found me a guy here in town who will do it for $80.00 including parts! Figure on leting him do it the first time and check everything else out! Would like to stay with Mercury parts don't know of a place here in Springfield that I can get them from.
Don't know if State Farm Insurance Sucks or not! Just got the insurance on the boat for normal coverage, didn't even know that lower unit was covered until one day when agent told me it was and not to worry about Truman stumps!
About every 2-3 yrs id replace it . some of them can b a pine in the butt.i know a guy north of springfeild that can do it . he works on boats for a liven. you can pm me if you want ...
I change mine on a Merc 150 every two years. Not that hard. You should pull the prop and check for fishing line too.
