looks great to me Bob
thank you James.
Nice Snake!!!!
thats some mighty good colors Bob
thank you guys for the comments we didn't have anything specially in mind when we were making these up these are only scraps that I have left over and we were just messing around seen what we can do they did not come out exactly like I wanted them to I do not like the big eyeballs on little baits on 2 inch Stinger they would have been fine so this is why we use two different sizes to see what they would look like.
Snake,
You got it going on, don't kid yourself. Those baits look great! Eyes, I say forget them. Can't hardly sell jigheads if they don't have eyes, just makes it redundant for the plastic to have them to. I love to go to Wal-Mart and sporting good stores and watch and listen to fisherman, kinda keeps a finger on the heartbeat. Every now and then I'll ask them some questions just to really get a grip, I'm NEVER disappointed in the responses, they're great. I guess them eyes catch something, fisherman! Personally, my jigs don't need to see where they're going, GULP.
I agree with you 100% eyeballs are for fishermen I'm a firm believer in action is what catches the fish we are more or less just messing with the eyeballs you know something to do we do not put eyes on our plastic baits when we are selling they are too time-consuming and cost prohibitive for me to produce I'm betting that you probably used a lot of plastic baits without eyeballs and have done quite well catching fish I will only tell you this ever since I was 13 years old I've caught thousands of crappies I am not exaggerating one bit when I say thousands most of my jigs that I used in the past or plastic baits did not have eyes we will be 65. April so I have a lot a years behind me in the knowledge to go with it on making jigs and fishing for crappie crappie has always been my number one game fish two fish for and they are a lot of fun so most the time that you are putting eyeballs on jigs it's to catch fishermen but I will only say this about eyes on jigs it makes them look good not on plastic baits like I told you it is cost prohibitive for me to do so and also you have a long time involved doing it that's why it is costly to produce something like this but if the sportsman wants to pay then us guys that produce custom plastic baits will deftly put them on here you might say that we will produce anything that threatens works on or our customers would want I don't know how much experience that you had with fishing jigs it might be quite interesting to find out how many other guys out there over the years did not have eyes on jigs and how they did there has been much said about eyes on jigs in many post about it on here the is Pro and con about it I believe if the fish are on a feeding frenzy that they will go after anything that looks good to them I don't think they are paying attention to whether or not that plastic bait or jig has eyeballs you might say putting eyes on jigs is a talent and again I say it makes them look better only to the public I think .
bob.
We actually did a little experimenting with eyes for a bit. It was a eyes vs. plain, and the plain painted jigs won everytime over the eyes. We can only speculate over the reasons why, some eye patterns and styles were better than others, but they still lost. some things we found were 1)color,contrast 2) action 3) size. We follow this "formula" to help us get zeroed in that "up and down" jig or lure. But your right, gotta do what sells, I guess it leaves more fish for the rest of us.
I have experimented with it for years....my findings are this....a blind jig catches just as many fish and probably more than a jig with eyes. The eyes do look good though and it makes the baits more appealing to the fisherman, not the fish.
As some of you know I have just started pouring my own baits. I think the 3 most important things to remember is
1- action
2- color
3- size
anything other then that is just for looks. Just my thoughts.
all of you guys hit everything right on the nail I'm glad us old-timers really know what's going on in we definitely know what it takes to catch fish I hope to hear more opinions about this is time goes by.
I got my microwave and pyrex today. Will experiment a little tomorrow Bob. I am an eye man because I want my lures to imitate minnows who by the way have eyes also.
Big fish eat little fish.
Fish have eyes.
Works for me. LOL
Whats more important to me than eyes on a bait....is the part that catches the fish.....thats right, the hook. I catch more fish using sickle hooks and I catch even more if those sickle hooks are red.
I fully understand Mike on what you are saying you're wanting something that looks natural to fish to feed.
I will agree with you 100% on the hooks G.
I think its more what you have confidence in......I like 32nd weedless heads and pretty much stick to 2 diff color combos......and really kinda one to 2 "styles of jigs"......its all about what works for you....just like thos jigs Bob reproduced for me and posted.....they dont look like much, but I'll tell yea give me those over any store bought plastic with all the bells and wistles any day.....if it works go with it....
The thing that I have found is.....You can make a minnow bait look just exactly like a shad or any other type real minnow and the bass will love it and the crappie will not pay it much attention. But make it some bright wild un natural color and the crappie will nail it. I pull crank baits a lot and all summer long my best colors have been either pink or orange. Its the same way when I fish jigs.....something natural looking will not do as good with the crappie as a un natural bright color will. But I live in Mississippi and fish a lot of stained water so maybe that is why.
I think there are times that they absolutely make a difference. When vertical fishing over brush and the crappie are just sitting there looking at the bait I have found eyes make the difference. when long line trolling with a faster presentation it makes no difference at all with the faster presentation. I also like making my baits to be custom otherwise its no different then pulling them off the shelf at wal mart. With the baits the way I make them all I gotta do is put on a jig head. I dont coat mine most of the time but I will when trolling in muddy water to help with contrast.
you might find this interesting you guys I was fishing in the slough that the water was very muddy I was fishing chartreuse and also white with green I was not catching any fish at all so I made up a plastic bait you might say it looks like yellowy brown it was a killer in the muddy water I couldn't figure out why because it was the same jig but in a different color of this yellowy brown might say it look like Baby poop is the only way that I can describe this, color and of course if you made a bunch of to sell nobody would buy them of course they were the ugliest looking things that you ever seen what they definitely caught fish you are right Keith also G you are very good and you are also right.
Bob.....Remember those black and sweet potatoe stingers that you made for me??? Mike thought that was a goofy color...truth is its the best color combo for a stinger that I have ever used.
I do believe what some say about use what you have confidence in. However, there is a reason why I have confidence in what I use. I have confidence because it has proven to be effective. In saying that, if it is proven to be effective, I will use it more, and therefore I will catch more on it because I limit my time using other baits. It is not to say that the other baits and styles do not catch fish though. In the right place and time I am sure many styles will work. I have never experimented with eyes really. I have experimented with colored verses plain heads and 9 times out of 10 plain catches much more for me. I am still not sold on the sickle hooks yet either. I found that I lose just as many fish on those as any other jig, although I have not been using them long enough to make a fair judgement. Man I missed a lot while I was away.
By the way snake I forgot to mention those look great.
yes more posts than I can get too ha ha
