60 Amp Breaker, The Real Story

It is very unlike me not to have any pics, but my phone had gone dead so here's my butla story any way.So bigc and I were crankindue north saturday when I noticed some dark clouds appearing to be headed our way. I axed bigc if he though we should get off the lake our hang tight or ride out since it was almost 1 oclock anyway. We hadn't seen any lightening so we decided to keep on fishing. Then the mother of all winds cimes from nowhere strait in our face. As all of the little boats head for cover in the nearest cove, we pay no mind to the danger as the waves begin to mist over the front of the boat. As I start to get a little more concered, I realize that the 101 is all out in 10th gear yrying to maintain 2.2 mph, but it could only hold 1.8. About a minute later, complete power down. I knew what had happened. So we did what anybody would have done. Untangled our mess and started cranking downwind. At least I know my breaker works and the boat didn't go up in flames. Wouldve been a BAD time to abandon ship

It shuts itself off so it won't overheat. Can't run on 10 but a couple minutes.

Sounds like it's time fer an 80 or a hunnert amp breaker. Whizz on over heatin. The water will keep er cool.

When I installed the breaker, I really thought that I'd never see it trip unless I hung the motor in some sort of vegatation. I guess it's doing it's job.

On a much cooler note. I figured out in some massive waves, if I'm running the big motor and cutting across the waves at the perfect angle, I can get BigC soakin wet:cool:

I don't like it. You got some issue. Motor should be capable of running on 10 for a long time without tripping the breaker. Only reason it should is if on a severe load....granted the stiff wind may have produced the load, but I still don't like it.

Who was it that got stranded on the Res the other day, didnt say anything about theirs throwing a breaker and I bet it was running on 10.

Stranded on the rez was a bad starter. Terrova 101 saved the day in that case.

ES got gewber wiring.

Something aint right if he tripped a 60 just by running on high. ES got a new 100 would swap for your 60.

You off your game there Hollic. That's twice today you been wrong. First on the Power Bubbles, now this. The breaker tripped due to heat buildup. Heat build up due to resistance. Resistance due to sump'n aint' right. Agree it's a safety feature, but shouldn't be needed from what he described.

ES.....you do have 6 gauge wiring right? Not a step down in the run is it - like the breaker wire...or in the plug ends? You sure you made good connections when you installed?

From the way you described it tripping, you may go years without tripping it again, but there's something that's not right.

I agree.....I can run my 80 lb. Terrova on high for as long as I want and not trip the breaker and my breaker is just a 50 amp.

Same here G, I have run mine on 10 for 30 minutes to make sure it would not trip the breaker. Something is wired wrong or worse the motor is pulling too many amps.

Wonder how much line he has unspooled from his reels with this one, might better pull the prop LoL.

I can't blame the motor. I'd have given up too against that BS!!!!!!

i have run mine from clear creek to the dam on 10 no problem but i am not a JADA

Im trin to figure out how this not BigC,s fault. And I really thought we were going to get through one fish in trip without a ES catastrophe. NOT!

Actually, prop would be a good place to look. Check it and let us know. Tell ya what ES next time you're out on a decent day, run your motor up on 10 for about 5 minutes or so, then touch the leads where it plugs into the boat. If they're hot, you've got a problem you haven't figured out yet.

Seriously, check that prop tonight and let us know. Dang good way to ruin a motor.

ES done been reading too many of DD's post and has adopted the DD way of boat maintenance - have a problem, ask for advice, received expert instruction complete with pics and diagrams, ignore advice, day before the tournament ask for advice again, decide it's too much trouble and just slap some bailing wire and duct tape on it and hope for the best, repeat 12 times, then take it to a shop and wait 12 weeks for them to get it ready.

When installing the prop, how right should one screw it on?

Seems to me there were pics the other day of line wrapped and tangled in said prop. If all the line wasnt removed this could be an issue.

Sigh.....just back the old nut off and check for line....then toss the factory nut and replace with a nylock and turn it until it seats the prop and all of the nylon bushing is on a thread.

Just snug it up good ES.....you don't want to go real tight or you'll break the plastic.

It's as good as broke right now.

Tighten until you hear a cracking noise, take two aspirin, and call me in the morning.

What you need to do is to take the factory nut and toss it and replace with a stainless nylock. Tighten until the prop is snug against the foot.
