New Jig I have been wanting to do

Only thing is I wish I had used a #8 Sickle in place of this #6, but main thing is notice you can not see the stem of that hackle as it will not be able to have a fish cut it at all. I am loving this and think using some quality hackle (this is not saddle or neck hackle and came from a nice cape) maybe even dry fly hackle on a smaller jig for blue gills and crappie. The tail is barbules from a pheasant tail feather. It worked just like I wanted it to though and that body shines right through. Very cool materials and I love crossing over from flies to jigs. Gonna do some more different kinds soon.

So do you think it will work?

Good looking jig Skip. I tie some similar for 'gills on #8 and #10 heads with the palmered stuff from a better grade feather so the palmered hackle doesn't stick out too far, but the body and pheasant you use make a big difference. I als put a small piece of micro chenille in red out the back of the body, but it doesn't go past the back of the hook, just a stub. I was told they like it a lot and can't argue as they catch fish just fine. I really like their slow fall, tries my patience but they produce. Mylar body?

Thanks guys! Think when I get some time the smaller jigs will be even better. Maybe a regular bend #8 and do more with colors between the body and the hackle, but this being the first one of this kind there are a lot of options for this.

nice job skip there's nothing like using hackle on jigs I've been doing this for many years hackle is always fun to work with .

Skip, I have said this many times. You have great skills and you are very creative. I also do a lot with hackle because it is so versatile. Well done.

Thanks guys I do appreciate it. I want to make some like this be even smaller hooks for blue gills and using dry fly hackle which I think would be really good. Maybe a small marabou tail or several different options of them.

that would definitely be a killer jigs skip in the smaller sizes using marabou for the tail end of Hackel body that should be a bluegill killer we have made them up using hair on the tail I have used many different materials for the tail using hackle along with it we will try to post some of those directly as you probably know if you used a hackle directly behind the head it will have a fanning action which looks terrific in the water but we've done it many different ways even like you've done skip with a full wrap of the body of Hackel the same processes are woolly worm we have used different colors of Hackel or the body and also behind the head what we are talking about is the body would be yellow hackle in behind the head of the jig would be red and maybe the tail would be white the combination of white yellow red has always been a good combination for me on crappie has we use to tie up many streamers with marabou with a yellow body of throat read we put them marabou behind the eye of the hook and always put a piece of red on the tail very little the marabou was always white the streamers were killers is you can work them with your fly rod they would be under the surface a foot or more when the fish were feeding on top we had no problems on catching fish it's been a long time since we have fly fish for of crappie but it is a ball you will occasionally catch a large mouth bass where I used to fish would scare the heck go to you because you think you would have a world record crappie in a course the bluegills would not leave me alone sometimes they were a nuisance but all in all it was a lot of fun catching a variety of fish use the fly tying technology with making jigs is always been fun for me and like you have done skip this is terrific this will definitely teach more skills on making jigs keep up the good work we enjoy looking at your stuff.

I started my jig tying years ago by imitating streamers and woolly boogers on jig heads. Some fly patterns on 1/64 or 1/80 jig heads are deadly on bream.

Well I have way too muck high quality dry fly hackle not to use it some and I think this is a good way, but not this big of a hook as I am thinking even crappie will hit these tiny jigs in the spring so add some big blue gill to that and it becomes worth using it and that is better than it just sitting here doing nothing. Just maybe go to a #8 sickle hook and different type tails.
