I was rooting around in the shed out back and came across this relic, it's the old ring style flasher type, don't know if it works, is it worth messing with or should i just mail it to the Smithsonian?

There are people who still use them. There is one on eBay right now with two bids at about $22.
Now there’s an oldie…
Some diehard flasher fisherman out there may buy it from you. Try listing it on eBay and see what you can get for it.
Oh that's a fairly modern one. I have an old Heathkit flasher unit in near mint condition. Still works. It's a portable unit in a nice metal case and runs on two six volt batteries. Real high tech back in the those days.
WOW! Heathkit? that's got to be ancient! do you use it?
By the way, how do you use this old Hummingbird Super Thirty II ? anyone remember?
Wow is right and it works too!
Is that a Heathkit from Heathkit or one of the ones that Allied Sports assembled?
[Allied Sports later turned into Humminbird.]
Super Thirty II is used the same way other flasher units are: turn it on and up until you just start to see the second echo (return) of the bottom of the lake (example: in 23 feet of water you should get a second return at 46 feet). Adjust the Noise Reject control as needed and adjust to either the 30 or 60 foot depth scale.
I just looked and I have a pdf file of the operations manual. E-mail me and ask for this if interested.
Hey Greg, thanks for the offer, i googled itand found the manual, thanks again. By the way, since i don't have anything else to use, i think i'll play around with it, at least use it for a depth finder, guess it will run off of a lawnmower battery, right?

totem, i forget what mine is on my old bass boat but it's a hummingbird flasher. the boat is a '76 so i'm guessing the flasher is too since i bought it as a package. i found lots and lots of fish with that thing. i haven't had the boat in the water in 30 years. it's, the boat, a classic by now.
and i have a lowrance "green box" flasher and another that's in a metal box like the lowrance that says international fish spotter on it. then the old pflueger "fish finder." still in the box.
Sounds like you could open your own museum! LOL, I'm gonna fiddle around with it and see how it does, i was reading the "wife bought me a 597ci HD DI thread in the electronics section of this board, man that thing does everything but reach out and put the hook in the fish's mouth ! like to have one of those, the FF would cost more than my boat and trailer ! LOL
I still use my Low version Silent 60. I've been looking at that thing forever, it's like comfort food. I had an X-15mt on the console which I've replaced with a HDS-8 with
SS1. I was going to move the x-15 to the TM but decided I still like that old flasher. I've found a ton of structure and caught a ton of fish with that thing. Sure the new units will show you exactly what is down there but does it really matter? Not really. You'll see humps, drop offs, brush and fish just like the other units but you have to inturpit what it is you're looking at since it can't draw a pic.
Like HB Greg says, turn the power up just enough to get a 2nd bottom reading (I call it an echo) If you are in 10 fow keep turning it until you see another return at 20 fow.
Fish will show up as faint blips in the first return (0'-10')
A friend of mine says anything more than a flasher on the bow is information overload. LOL
it's been years since i've seen mine but the name "super sixty" seems to ring a bell. i'll be going over to mo in a few days and i'll see if i can find it.
I just went out and hooked mine to a 12V battery, it turns on, but that's all i know about it, gonna look up the user manual and do a little reading. Looks like it was mounted on the TM, what's the advantage of mounting it there? seems like it would be the worst place to mount it because of the interference of the TM motor.
totem, before you do anything else in hooking it up put in a fuse holder in the positive wire with a one amp fuse just in case something goes wrong it won't ruin the finder. when you turn it on there should be a red "neon" looking light that spins behind the face of the finder. my transducer was for putting on the outside bottom of the transom but i put it in the bilge and poured some water in there and it would read through the hull fine at any speed. i mounted mine on the top of the console and would turn it for reading it while driving the boat or turn it forward when i was up front fishing. bringing back memories.
To late, already tested it, but it didn't fry! I see the dial spinning and i get a red neon like bar at zero. The super thirty II is supposed to have a one inch transducer, looks like i have a two inch and it already has a hose clamp to strap it to the TM, the one inch is 16 degree cone and the two inch is 32 degree. I guess i won't know anything till i get it in the water. I guess this thing belonged to my step dad but i don't remember ever seeing or hearing about it.
totem, it sounds like it's working right but still put in a fuse holder and fuse the thing. something could happen like two bare wires get together and might ruin the thing. it's working right and when you put the transducer in water at the lake you should then get a bottom reading. if it's 20 ft deep the red light will be at the 20 ft mark. any turning up the gain knob will increase the reading ability or sensitivity and if you get a red blip between the zero and bottom reading it is probably fish. a school of fish will show several blips there. people are wanting those older flashers now. don't give it away or trade it off. give yourself time to get used to using it.
Will do, it's amazing it even turns on, don't make things to last anymre like this do they? Can't wait to get it in the water and play around, kinda like Christmas morning ! and the price was right too!
Mine is mounted to my TM, I like it there. I use that Silent 60 every week still. Most of the folks I fish with just can't understand why I don't turn the HDS aound thats on the console while I'm fishing since it's mounted to a Ram Mount. I tell them I can see as much on my flasher as they can on the graph. I leave the HDS facing the rear of the boat unless I'm fishing solo then I turn it to the front of the boat.
I just gave a Silent 30 to a friend earlier this year, I've kept it as a back up for about 10 years and it's just been collecting dust.
When i found it, it, it was in a plastic bag and i had thrown it in a trash can, started thinking about it, dug it out of the trash and was trying to find someone to give it to because i hate to throw something away that someone might get some use out off, well nobody wanted it so i kept it, now i have a new toy and something else to play with. I will probably pick your brain later on what i may be seeing.
Once you get used to it, it's as clear as any other unit.
it's readings are instantaneous. Your not waiting for the dumb thing to draw a picture.
totem, i see you are in ga. if you are fishing a lake with rocky bottom the the red "light" showing the bottom will be brighter on a rocky bottom and dimmer on a mud bottom. hard clay like you probably have will show up good. and like i said small line blips above the bottom will be fish and if they are close to the top in deep water probably will be shad. and if you see fish below them stop and jig a spoon or jig.
super thirty was the best flasher unit. More detail than the sixty. Always wanted the thirty but couldn't afford it. Now I'm stuck with an 1198 and a 997.
Sorry I disappeared for a while there. My old Heathkit is the real deal bought from the retail store in Houston where I grew up. I put it and dozens of other kits together including their 25" "Black Matrix" color tv back in the day. Still have the instruction books for all those somewhere. I loved to build those kits and at the time it actually saved some money to build your own. I owe much of my self taught electronics background to Heathkit. It led me to get into ham radio back in '72 and has helped with me a lot in various jobs over the years even though my formal schooling is mechanical.
The flasher uses a neon bulb with the current fed through a carbon brush/ bronze slip ring assembly. It was somewhat intermittent with moisture or dust getting on that bronze ring. The motor was a bit noisy and the rotating disc seemed a little unbalanced which caused the unit to vibrate just a little. Back in the day it still beat sticking your head in the water though. :-)
I’ve worked on a Heathkit or two back in my days in the Service Department here at Humminbird. Try using a pencil eraser on the bronze slip ring assembly to clean and smooth it out. There used to be an adjustable weight on some of the discs to help balance them out.
BTW: my Father was a HAM – WA4CFI until his passing.
Sold one of these to a fella in Tenn about 5 years ago. I used it for ice fishing with a motorcycle battery. Great unit. The 32 degree cone is the one you want for shallow water--I loved the thing. Remember, narrow band = hard bottom, wide band = soft bottom, no band equal MUD, weeds fill the screen, and slopes show up as a wide band, then flatten.
FB on your dad being a HAM. My oldest son has his general ticket but my youngest son just said "dad, I have a cell phone, why do I need to learn radio". I gave up. Maybe he'll realize one day how many of his "toys" are based on radio technology. Including that damn cell phone.
Check on the pencil eraser. Use them all the time for cleaning switch contacts and soft contacts on flexible pc boards. Good trick.
I remember when the Super Sixty came out. It was top shelf back then but I didn't have a pot to ..spit in so I never was able to afford one. I run the 898cSI now looking to add a 998 up front by next year. Quite a change in technology.
canepole said there is no such thing as a fish finder but i found a lot of them with my super sixty. when you see the blips while running 45 mph and turn around and drop the tm and find them again and drop a spoon or plastic worm in and catch a fish makes your day. or a lot of times in my case at night time.
