798 SI too small?
I really don’t want a big screen on my dash and thankfully my eyesight is still pretty good. I was just wondering if anyone has a 798 and just hated it due to the screen size. I just want gps and a good graph on the dash and I think si would be a plus or just a fun tool to play around with.

I have the 798 ci si HD on my 17 10 Ranger , use it on the bow and the consoul , move it back and forth as needed , use the HDSI transducer seems to be better than the one that comes with the unit , can see the screen in bright sunlight Too. Have no problem with the smaller screen as yet !

So only one person on the site has a 798?:confused:JK Anyone else? Thanks for the input.

If you truly want the advantages of Si them IMHO the 798 is too small. I have a 898 on the console and the 798 on the bow. If you are just wanting standard Sonar and maybe DI you would probably be OK. I personally would not go with anything smaller than an 898. If I could afford it I would buy the largest screen possible in order to take full advantage of the SI feature.Thumbs Up
You would probably get more diverse input if you posted this on the main forum.:)

I have a Low but in either brand in my opinion, I would get as much screen as you can afford if you are at all interested in the SI. Can you imagine what 100' to either side of the boat looks like. Even on a larger screen it's small. If all you really want is sonar and down it would probably be okay.

I have a 798. It is smaller, but still works great. Like was mentioned, the screen is bright and the side imaging works like the bigger units. I put mine on a ram mount so I can move it closer to my face - then I move it to face the front of the boat when I get up there - gives me one finder in front and the HB in the back. I keep it set at 75 feet each side so I can see the fish easier. If I could afford to go bigger, I'd go 1198 series. Because the 898 has a ticker on the left side, the usable screen is about the same as the 798. And the price differential isn't all that bad for 998 vs 1198.
Most of the time, I'm off to the side of any structure and I turn the screen to just look at that one side. It works awesome for this and the screen size is not an issue. For finding bait/fish in deeper water, it can't be beat!

I had a 997 and later purchased a 798. 798 was too small so I sold it and went with the 1198.

Will the 798 do the trick? Yes, especially with the HDSI transducer. Is the bigger screen really that much better? Yes, but you just have to decide what you want to spend and how much you will use it.

I have one and it works for me. I'm sure bigger is better in this case but I didn't want to spend the bux.

Had a 797 went to the 1198 much happier now

I've yet to hear any 900 or 1100 series owners wish they had saved the few extra bucks and get a smaller screen

I have a 798 and have no problem seeing the screen. Bigger is always better. However, I don't think I would catch anymore fish with a bigger screen. I don't wear glasses so the 798 works fine for me.

I have a pair of 898's. In hindsight, wished I'd waited on one and bought a 1198 this year, but alas, I tookthe wife's generosity and bought while she was willing to let me spend the money.

I just recently bought a 798. Yes, I would have liked to have had the bucks to spend on a larger screened model but I must say I am very pleased with the 798. No issues at all with it
