Any suggestions? Already have some road runners, what else? What are your favorites?
1/16 ; 1/32 sickle hook with an icicle or jilly jelly jig with a hackle tail.
without sickle hooks them RRers are just road runners!RoflRofl
I use mostly plastic bodies like Yum Beavertails and Bobby Garland Slab Slayers. I buy jig heads by bulk off of ebay and paint them myself plus I also keep on hand some jig heads from CrappiePro.com. I like their painted jig heads, especially because of their black chrome hooks they use. Very sharp, very strong.
SatDoc, those are some good looking Road Runners...err...or are they Sickle Runners? :)
This is the first year I have tried pink, but I have had a lot of luck with it, I have been using Strike King's new Rage Tail crappie grubs, which often seem to out fish others. Many of the pro guides, as I understand it, use a lot of Southern Pro tubes, grubs, etc . They claim SP lures are soft, and that the fish prefer that. They are also very inexpensive and are made in the USA. I have a big order in for some of them.
Michael the crappie pro at the Cincinnati Bass Pro Shop likes tubes. If memory serves he uses Chartreuse, Blue and White, Black and Chartreuse, and Red and White, as his primary go to colors. He uses tube jigs, which fit inside the tube, and Berkly Crappie Nibbles inside the tubes. I think I have left out one of his primary color combinations though. For me, the Pink/Chartreuse Strike King grub with a RoadRunner head is now my very first go to color/lure. Of course I would be fine with satdoc1's sickle hook RR alike jig heads too! After that, I tend to agree with Michael.
In the last week I caught a s.m. bass and a 9" crappie on a Bubblegum "pink" 1.5 Strike King hard bait. The bass was 1/2" under the 12 inch limit, but the crappie was a keeper. I have 2 or 3 other pink hard baits, I just happened to have the Strike King handy, I would suspect they would have hit any of them.
I nearly forgot, I believe Capps and Coleman (sp?) use Lime green/Chartreuse as their go to. Lime is also called John Deere, or at least it's close enough.
look in the DIY plastics forum. It is a bait made by Snake River. Go to the forum and
Google icicle. It resembles a leech in profile but is only 2 inches long.
This is an icicle.

lightwirehooker on CDC buddy buys them and im coming around too.
Just an FYI here, but anyone selling Roadrunner type (Pony heads) sure can get into a lot of trouble since Blakemore has the exclusive rights to that design and are the only ones that can sell them. One can make them for their own personal use, but better not sell any as Blakemore owns the Trademark for that.
So posting on this froum about selling these is taking a huge risk and could loose everything from a law suit. Just ask teh guy that use to make stump jumpers for BPS, he lot everything in a law suit by Blakemore. So it's a proceede at you own risk and putting it out in the public is just asking for trouble.
My Roadrunner heads I buy from Blakemore and they know what I do with them and I have their permission to sell them since we made a deal about 2 years or more back. If I use a blade that is not their imprinted blade I have to put a sticker on the package that states these jigs are sold under and then their Trademark number.
So Nightprowler you may want to ask your friends not to mention that on the internet as it will leave you open for way more than you bargain for. I sure wouldn't want anyone to know if I was selling anything other than a real Roadrunner that I bought from them or risk losing everything you have. Trademarks don't run out like a Patent does.
You guys do what you want, but I would be remiss if I didn't tell you this so you can make your own decision if you want to take that risk or not. I don't think you can make enough money to make it worth it, at least not to me. If you notice they are a sponsor here too so you never know who may be watching.
Personally it make no difference to me at all.

Well, looks like BPS may own or have interest in the Stump Jumper name and design. My local BPS store's selection of Stump Jumpers has now taken up nearly 1/3rd of an isle while the RR section has been narrowed down to just a few feet.
I also see more mention of them in articles now than I used to.
I was under the impression that he was making them with round heads, and BPS is selling these too, that patent has run out as far as I know. I don't think the head shape makes much difference to the fish. I could be wrong, but I think the little flash from the blade is what gets their attention. We tried the BPS brand but while the hooks seem reasonably sharp, we seem to lose a lot more fish using them, so we are still paying a premium price for the RoadRunners, at least till others can make suitable replacements, which IMO, BPS has not.
They are trying to protect their invention/investment, I don't begrudge them that. It takes money to bring something new to market and get a user base going to support that product, without protection no one would bother bringing a lot of new things to the market place. I always said I would rather start a company and then sell it than to try to fight off the copy cats who would follow nipping at your heals and trying to under cut you till no one made any money.
myself i make poneyheads with or without sickles and i trade mine.
Sometimes I just use a 1/16 ball head sickle jig, thread a swivel and blade on the hook and then attach a plastic tail such as an icicle. You will get plenty of flash, vibration, and catch a lot of fish using that setup. Use the smallest "o" ring you can to attach the blade to the swivel.
Stump Jumper after that guy lost his business were made my Blakemore in a special deal they made with them. I do think now they have changed the design so I don't know if Blakemore makes them or someone else now. I just know what happened in the 1990's because I posted some pics of some pony heads and that guy was nice enough to contact me and tell me his story. I got me to work harder on being able to buy from Blakemore and that is what finally happened after 2 years of trying and not buying. Each order take a long time as they don't just stock unpainted heads so not only that but there is like a 500 minimum order for each size you want. I have had some tell me lately that Blakemore wouldn't sell to them and I really don't know why.
As for their Trademark (not patent) it doesn't expire like a patent does, so it's not running out.
PBUG not sure I would even say I was trading them as a barter is much like selling them. I don't know the law on that, but I would check if I were you.
Just telling the story here and trying to tell you guys watch what you do or say when talking about a product that falls under someone Trademark. I don't begrudge them of that since they were smart enough to get the trademark and it's pretty hard to blame some one that has a product like that to not want others to sell the same thing and take their business away. I bet everyone of you would do the same thing if you had a product that was very successful and was a big part of you business. Same reasons some get a patent, but getting a Trademark seems much smarter to me since it doesn't run out.
You have to realize that doing business on a scale like they are cost a lot of money so they want to protect everything they can. Some of you guys that pour heads talk about the cost of your molds, but do you know how much their molds cost? How about $5000.00 each, yes I said that and will again, $5000.00 per mold and have not made a jig yet when they get these molds.
And hey if this offends you that they are trying to protect their business and don't want to buy any more Roadrunners then so be it, but that is a pretty silly attitude. I bet if in their position you would do the same thing!
I would also ask if your making a living making any product in sport fishing, do you pay your excise tax? It's 11% off the top???

Nightprowlers weedless heads are awesome, I like the 32nd with a #2 gold hook, but he makes a lot of different ones.....the lake fork swim baits are pretty nice, and once Bob gets going again Bobs jigs ( Home) are grade A also, the icicles and stinger shad are great....
Pan Assassins Jigs, 1.5". Tiny Shad Colors, 2 lb. line, 1/32 and 1/64 the oz jig heads.
How about Jig bodies? Are Bass Pro's any good? Who has the best prices on jig bodys?
I think Southern Pro wins on the dollar vs number of plastic lures as far as I know. They are also American made, and I understand that many guides use them exclusively because they are soft and they think crappie prefer that. Bass Pros are fine, people catch crappies on them all the time. Just remember, the Crappies either have, or soon will move deep, so without a boat you are not likely to catch many now. When the water stratifies, the black crappie will move shallow again to some degree, white crappie tend to suspend in deeper water.
