That is so awesome!! One of these days I am gonna get me a buggy whip and give it a go. Tried once when I was younger and did not turn out well. Had to ride home on my bike with rod in hand and hook in neck. Worst of all explaining to dad why I had his flyrod to begin with. But now after a mere 30 some odd years it is just another good memory of dad. He offered to teach me but at that point I had enough of that gig.

At 60 almost 61 it might be to late to try and learn fly fishing
jv.....all you got to do is learn to roll cast with a flyrod to catch bream. Its not that hard to catch on......you can do it. Its a lot of fun. I have three flyrods now.Quote:

Have to admit, my fly rods/outfits (I own 2) sit in the closet for about 49 weeks out of the year :) That said, the 3 weeks when the bluegills are near nesting and you can get them to blow up on a small popper or sponge spider is well worth learning to use them (and have them). In this case, with the colder weather they moved back off to deeper water adjacent to the nests, and we finally had to put on a small bead head nymph to get them to go. With temps back in the 70's by Friday, I'm expecting a good surface spider bite when they move back up.
Like any other type of fishing, fly fishing can be as simple and easy, or as complicated and expensive as you choose to make it. I choose the former since I do it so little, and luckily, I've never hooked myself yet, though I have popped myself a time or two in the back. Beside, the hooks are tiny and can't penetrate that deeply, and I crush down the barbs anyway, so it won't be any worse than getting stuck by a thorn if I do screw up a cast :)

I fish mine year round. Rollcasting crickets and redworm pieces into 5-6 ft. of water is awesome. you just see that line start to slip through the water and lift up and you got a nice one to haul in every time. IMO, you should give it a try for more than just a few times a year, you will love it.
I only flyfish for everything, and saltwater, except walleye. Last count 16 different rods, and one spey rod. Talk about a drug habit!
It's gametime here in Kansas! I've caught well over 100 in the last three trips. Tonight, my counter stopped at 42. 21 of those came home to meet some hot grease! :) Nothing huge, but a nice mess of fat 7-8.5" fish. A little dark colored nymph I came up with a foot under a Thingamabobber tonight flat tore 'em up!
Ya can't beat a fish basket that's got a little weight in it from bull gills.
I'm gonna have to try it one day.
