2-4 inch bluegill, or goldfish.
blue gill or sorry to say guys but crappie also.... we usem in the 5-8 inch range
My #1 choice is ricefield slicks (Green Sunfish) about 4'' or larger. You catch too many Channels with small bait. They will bite just about any fish that's live from Blue Gill to Bullheads Catfish to Goldfish. I have caught Flatheads on 3 lb Channel Catfish that had taken the bait first. Bigger is better when looking for big Catfish.
I have had folks look at my tub of Ricefield Slicks that were so big they thought I had a good mess of fish to clean.RoflThumbs Up
Is it true that they wont hit a shellcracker? Sounds like poo to me !!!!!!
I have been told its unlawful to use game fish for bait...

crawfish
yattes here in oklahoma if the game fish is caught legally and is of legal length you can do what ever you want with it.as for the bait question i have caught flatheads on shad, perch, drum, crappie, sand bass, water dogs if anyone knows what they are( sure wish i could find some place to buy them again) chicken liver, cut up carp and also gar strips. alot of people use gold fish i have never caught anything but turtles on them. you can also use hotdog chunks soaked in garlick powder. a buddy of mine uses cheese.
I like usind eels out of the river when I can catch them on the bottom tight linning..
Not for hand hooking, but alot of the trot line fishermen around here use only stainless steel hooks.........no bait!
They do that here but soak special trotlines in no bait with hooks about every 4''. But is commercial tackle and is dangerous to run. The no bait mixtures vary but is sometimes old used motor oil with things like sweet anise oil, bannna oil, asfidity, wintergreen oil, and such added. It catches rough fish and Catfish. It is a good way to catch big Flatheads and Spoonbills.
Big bream or any sun fish alive.I like em best big, they take the hook better.
So my grand kids like to fish for small gills and i can use them for bait, they will like that.
