whats the best minnow bucket? A year around ,all season minnow bucket? websites or links would be great thanks
Plano 722 with foam liner.
Thanks man doing my best to find a good one... i like the price 2 THANKS AGAIN
Not sure exactly what your looking for. I seen one on another site. It was an Igloo water jug maybe 3 Gal. He drilled a hole in the top and put a nylon strap around the outside. Then hooked a Frabil bubbler on the strap, and ran the hose into the jug. It has a handle to carry it with. He puts ice inside to keep the minnows cool. It will work great up here in Northern Mich.
That is a pretty good idea...i built a shad bait tank probably could make the same thing in a smaller size
I never seen a shad bait tank. I looked at some of those jugs today. Rubbermaid makes some to, the ones I seen were $7 a lot cheaper than a minnow bucket. I couldn't find the size I wanted. I think a nylon dog collar might work good for a strap to go around it.. Keep me posted...
Well what I meant by "shad bait tank" I built a 30 gallon bait tank with a 30 gallon plastic barrel sitting inside a 55 gal. barrel and insulated it with "great stuff"put a dual bubbler on the lid and a 500 gph bilge pump on the bottom.I have a hose running out of the bottom bilge pump through the top lid and have panty hose "THE BEST FILTER POSSIBLE" "reusable and cheap" ... The concept behind all of that is that the water being pumped from the bottom is being filtered at the top and also swirling the water to help the filter process... minus the 30 gallon tank and a filter system , if i down sized somethings like you said a 3 gallon water jug with a bubbler that would work pretty good
I'm going to rig one up as soon as I find the jug I need. It will work great up here in the North.. I already have the bubbler. And I have an aerator for a small fish tank that I use in a 5gal. pail to keep minnows alive when I'm not fishing. I change the water once a day, and they will keep for days...
i use a thick strofoam cooler that you can get at walmart foer 10$ and ice it will kep minnows for a week or better when camping
Mike
crappie 1, thats what i think im going to do to unless someone shoots me a better idea
[QUOTE=Crappie 1;1534014]Hey, let me know how you make out, I'm going to try & make one when I get a chance...[/QUOt
WILL do man... let me know how yours goes
Hey June Bugg I bought a 3 gal. jug today. I think it will work fine. The only problem I can see is not being able to hang it over the side of the boat like a regular bucket. Any ideas? It will be great for winter when I use the bubbler all the time. But summer time may be different. Could always take the top off and dip some water out and put in fresh. I told you wrong, it's a 2gal made by Coleman and it was $8.88 at Walmart..
whats up crappie 1, Just read your your thread, if you wont 2 drag it beside the boat i would just get a flow troll minnow bucket they have them at the walmart...but i didnt know those things were that cheap i need to check it out been fishing heavy lately ....Hands Clapping
You can take the cheap styrofoam bucket and place it in a 5 gallon bucket like a home depot bucket etc. Bought bucket today, they are $2.54. Ok, now you can buy a can of the spray foam and seal strofoam bucket in 5 gal bucket real good and it will marry the cheap styrofoam to the bucket and also further insulate it. Its also hard to turn over and holds a good bit of water for minnows. Then for the top, just attach one of the real small bunjy cords across the bucket top to keep the cheap lid on while traveling. you can attach a minnow bubbler to the bucket side too and it will stay secure for you. You now have a minnow bucket for all year. When its summertime, take you some water bottles like you buy at wm or sams etc, and freeze them in freezer and take to lake in cooler. When minnow water starts to warm, throw in a water bottle (that you can reuse over and over btw) and minnows stay cold and lively all day. :) Tip of the Day.GCF
thats a sharp idea to thanks GCF
You used to could buy a sportsman 5 gallon bucket/cooler with a cushion swivel seat on top. It was a 5 gallon bucket with a strofoam liner inside which made it a cooler. Sounds like that would be the trick for a minnow bucket too.;) Check online or at the sporting goods stores and see if you can still find them.:)
You can get the 5 gal. pail with a swivel seat, but can't find one with the liner. Thanks. I'm going to finish mine in the morning, and if I can, I will post a picture. Hey June bugg, I know what you mean. Weather here is so windy everyday, mid 30's in the mornings, now we got rain coming in again...
No doubt, I agree the Plano 722 W/foam is indestructable!
Attachment 62282 Hey June Bugg, I just finished this up. Nylon strap/a buckle to tighten it. Then I hot glued it to the cooler, drilled a hole in the top for the air hose, hang the Friable Bubbler on the side, and your ready to go. Put your minnows, leaches, etc. Put a cooler pack or some ice to keep em' cool.
The best minnow bucket out there is one that has 5 to 6 minnows left in it after a good day of crappie fishing. Have a crappie day.
Here's what my buddies and I have been using for years. It's a 6 gal bucket with styrofoam liner. I run a Powerbubbles areator and can fish for days without losing minnows, as long as I change water daily. We were getting them at Academy, but they have quit carrying them. Don't know where to find them now. I will buy several when I do.

It works good, but it will be better in the winter. Minnows don't do that great here in the summer, I usually only try using them through June. We've used the cooler a few times with good luck, just change the water once a day or so.
Here's what I use in the hot days of the summer. We place the minnow bucket down inside the cooler, bag of ice around the minnow bucket. It's square, doesn't tip over in the boat, has a drink holder on top, a flip top for storing smokes, lighters, etc. Plus inside the cooler has a small tray that we use to place extra grubs, weights, hooks, etc. Almost never have to leave the seats with this sitting between the two of us.

Take a look at this website (mollycoolwrap.com)
It works great! Better than foam you don’t have to worry about it cracking and when the buckets gets dirty just replace it with another one.
Here's my cheap solution...I'd acquired surplus coolers over the years, so I added a pump to one, and some PVC piping with a dozen or so small holes drilled on the bottom of the horizontal pipe. Cooler was paid for years ago, unsure if I'd had the pump laying around or bought it (but they aren't expensive) and maybe $5 worth of PVC and wire/clamps. I don't leave it run constantly, just kick it on every hour or so for 5 minutes. I do keep ice in (which also adds oxygen to the water) it if it's hot outside though. I've been told (by talking to the guys at the bait shops) that keeping minnows at around 50 degrees is best. http://i374.photobucket.com/albums/o...g/IM003795.jpg http://i374.photobucket.com/albums/o...g/IM003796.jpg
That's a great idea. Our minnows were even dying in the bucket over the side of the boat. I made up a good one for winter(in this thread) my problem is keeping them in the summer.
Try a 5 gallon bucket insulator at mollycoolwrap.com there will be more room for minnows without the foam
Cray: How much of that spray foam do you put in the bottom of the 5 gal. pail? Do you also put it on the sides of the Styrofoam liner? Thanks, I got the stuff today to make it with..
Hopefully you got the low expansion. It docent take much, remember it will expand. If you are using the regular styrofoam bucket, place it in the 5 gal bucket mark the top of bucket about 3 or 4 in below top on out side of plastic bucket, pul out styrofoam bucket then drill some 1/4 in holes around bottom half of plastic bucket to install foam tip, put in a little at a time. The other holes will allow for expansion. Around the very bottom is where you will need the most. The foam will fill the voids and also glue the 2 buckets together. Around the top I use aquarium sealer. It is clear and just run a small bead around top edge to seal. I have found other sealers are to very toxic to the minnows or fish in live wells. I have started using the bucket liner made for 5 gal bucket and it fills bucket up with very litt clearance. A little foam sprayed around the bottom then place liner in before it expands and seal around top. My old bucket with styrofoam minnow bucket inside 5 gallon is going strong after 15 years. Hope this helps and good fishing.
Cray, I gotta tell you. I found a liner that is almost to the top of the 5 gal. pail. I didn't use any foam, it fits really good in there. I'm using minnows that I bought yesterday. Every few hours I put a frozen water bottle in the pail. Have the bubbler going, might have lost 3 minnows...Works great, thanks...
I use the foam liner in a 5 gal bucket and on hot days i put my aerater in my lunch cooler instead of pumping 90deg. air you are pumping in 40 deg air. dont ever have dead minnows.
