Found a nice bed of shell crackers today but couldn't get them to bite. What did I do wrong? I was using crickets and red worms. Finally did catch a mess but i could see lots of big ones that wouldn't bite.

lay the worm in the bed and leave it. eventually the one guarding the bed won't be able to stand it and will get the worm out of the bed.
Tiny crankbaits usually tick em off enough to hit...beetlespins work too.
if you can see the fish they can prob see you and they are spooky, back off of em and try, usually works for me.
In that situation, sight fishing, I like to drop the bait right in front of their mouth or even hit them on the head with the bait. They'll eventually get mad and bite the bait, or grab it and move it from their nest, then you set the hook and hold on tight because they're fighters and typically go crazy when hooked.
i been casting small jigs to bedding fish and just twitch it on a carolina rig type set up and they have been hammering it. if they won't bite try dead sticking it right in the dish and just let it lay there.
thanks for the info, I'm going back tomorrow weather permitting and stay with them til they decide to bite....hope they don't still have lockjaw, or it'll be long day!!!
I use a dropshot weight. Tie the jig about 8" on above a heavy sinker, maybe 1/4 to 3/8 oz and use a white jig u can see. Toss it in, back off a little and watch the jig until it disappears. Works for spooky bass at clear lakes like Table Rock.
I've never seen a shellcracker not bite on the bed. Keep fishin, good luck.
I have seen them not bite on the bed, and when it happened, they had been spooked by someone getting right on top of them. next day they were biting tho.
Finally made it back out and sure enough I stayed off of them a bit and caught a real fine mess. Not one of them was female. As soon as I figure out how to post pics, I'll do so. Any tips are appreciated, as was the the fishing tips.
