I have a Talon on my boat, which is a little cheaper than a PP. I have seen some home builts somewhere, may have been the BBC board.
Talon? I'll have to look that up. I'll check BBC for some home builts. I was thinking about air power, I could mount a small tank in my bilge and air, maybe a large paintball tank in my bilge. Just a thought.
if you try this post some picture of it please.
Strip, there was a post here while back from a guy wo uses a fiberglass rod from WWGrainger. Just stick it in the bottom and tie off to it. Lot of salt water guys use that method. Also saw a you tube video on cat fishing where they had a couple of brackets with ring eyes mounted on sides of boat. They just slid a couple of pieces of conduit through rings and stuck in bottom. Held boatin currrent.way cheaper than power options
There are a lot of cheap ways to hold a boat still in the water, but what I need is convienance. For instance when I am trolling a windy bank and need to rig a rod, It would be nice if the boat was still on the same side of the lake when I finish rigging. The design of the Power Pole is fairly simple and is actually going to be a hard design to better. So, If I can't better it, I'll try to make it cheaper. Air power is a lot cheaper than hydraulic, but not near as powerfull, smooth, or controllable. Another issue is my boat is small and I don't want a pole sticking 2 or 3 ft higher than my engine because it will play heck on the back swing of a baitcaster. so I am figuring on trying to build one that will only be about 2.5 ft tall so it will only anchor to about 5 ft.
What is the cost of a power pole? There are some inexpensive 12 volt hydraulic systems (Bailey Hydraulics).
How bout something like this. Cheap maybe not as cool as a PP but cool cost $$$$$.

I think a good deal on a power pole is about a grand installed. That is a pretty nifty set up on the boat pictured. What do you do with it when underway? I could see something like this working for me If I used an old troller mount to flip it in and out of the boat. However, It would be waaay easier to push a button. LOl! My thoughts are that the set-up pictured would be better suited for duck hunting than trolling a bank where I may need to put it up and down often. I'll search for bailey hydraulics, thanks.
They are for duck hunting. As far as the pole you could fix some way to maybe pull it up lock it and spin it down toward the back of the boat? I'm not sure where there is a will there is a way.
Here's one I found at Bailey, thinking of trying to build one myself also.

The best and cheapest way to go will be to buy a used mercruiser trim pump from ebay or somewhere. A common buy will be under $150.00 and it will be rigged with solinoids and mounting bracket and be somewhat water resistant. example Trim and tilt pump Mercruiser 350 454 | eBay.
Now I am on the hunt for a 2 way cylinder. I need the smallest bore I can find and a 12" - 14" stroke. must be 2 way. I am a gun smith so I can do the needed machine work and have the equipment to do it. But I don't have the ability to weld aluminum. Anyone have the ability to weld heavy aluminum want to do some labor swapping?
I use a bamboo pole and a blakemore gripper. It holds my boat (15')
I wanted one too and solved it with a Terrova I-pilot but I needed a TM anyway. The spot lock feature is just one thing I like about it.
It works great on anything. If the wind is say,5-10 it holds within a 6 foot circle. I tightline allthe time. If your locked in on a spot and a large gust hits you it takes it a Second to recover. I love the remote for dobbing jigs around logs and stumps. It is more useful crappie fishing than bass fishing.
Call this # 618-883-2417. Its called easy spud.
Be cool to hook up sometime, I would love to see that work. I assume it interfaces with your gps?
It has it's own GPS.
Whats an easy spud?
It is a trolling fishermans dream. I love mine. I still fish of the front during the spawn with a paddle in my hand. When I want to move I use the remote control. Each trip I use the foot control less and less. The only time I fish with my bamboo pole to hold me is during the spawn and Iam in shallow water.
Here is the breakdown I have so far. Mercruiser trim pump $125.00, 1 mercruiser trim cylinder $60.00 (this is the cheapest way I have found plus I know the cylinder is rated to the pump) 4 3' pieces of aluminum bar stock 1 1/4 X 3/16 - $35 2 3' pieces of 1/8 x 6 alum. $25 1 1/2" x 6" x 10" alum $60 (will cut mounting brackets from this) Fiberglass rod $30.00 misc switches and hardware $100 = $405.00 By building my own I would save around $500.00 (since my labor is free to me. LOl) and be able to custom fit it to my boat. However, I figure about 20 hrs to do the work, I would run the risk of Power Pole catching me with it and demanding I disassemble it, and it will not look as professional as the purchased unit. so, It's kinda a toss up to be worth the effort. I will sipher on this a little while and decide if I really need one. For me, $400.00 isn't near as easy to come by as it used to be.
Easy spud is a pivoting ring contraption that attaches to the gunwale of you boat. You push the pole down into the lake bottom to hold the boat in place. Unlock it and pull the pole up to move. Ready to go I think it swivels up outa the way so you can motor from spot to spot. He had a website at one time so you could view it. I think it was www.easyspud.com.
I have seen a guy on my local lake that has a piece of coduit with a couple inches of cement in the end to keep it from filling up with mud and weighing it down. He slides this through a conduit strap that is attaches to the side of his boat and just sticks it in the mud when he needs it. Not real fancy but it works. When he is done he just pulls it up and straps it down with rod saver straps.
