Welcome to the hobby. Welcome from Alabama. That is pretty good for you first one. It will catch fish for sure. Normally you will want the strip the marabou fibers from the stem before tying them on to your jighead. Just a thought. Use flat waxed nylon thread for really neat ties.
Yes take off the barbules from the stem by pinching part and pulling it off and stacking it until you have as much as you want. Then bunch it up between your fingers and decide how long you want it and cut the end you just pulled off and tie it in.
Can't tell enough about the rest to say much.

Welcome to tying. ;)
Good colors on your jig. You may want make the tail shorter.
thanks guys!! barbules r the things holding them together rite?
Barbules are the soft feather part and the stem holds the entire feather together. Just start at the big end of the stem and pull off what looks like trash and really short stuff until there are some longer barbules. Then pinch a group on one side of the stem close tot he stem and pull it down and off the stem and lay this down, do it again and lay this batch down right on top of the other one and keep doing that until you have enough to make the jig tail. Then pinch all of it together and cut that end off to make the tail the length you want it and tie it in. Stop when the barbules get to short to use and just keep that tiny tip for later on something small. I just put all my tips in a zip lock for keeping.
