Thats the million dollar question...My best advice to you...If your going to drop pvc....Use landmarks on the bank to help you get back to it...I like to use two landmarks and line them up...It should get you in the right area...

Our fishiding units show up as good as a tree underwater. Some guys don't like that but it's the case. Look on our website and you will find a side imaging pic of one of our Safehouse units. Clear as a bell with fish using it.
I was told by someone that PVC does not show up and thats way its used. The statment sounded false.. I guess I will just put a piece of PVC under my transducer to see.
The pvc that I dropped will show on a Humminbird 718, but it has a really weak return. The bamboo shows much better.
It seems to depend on the type of PVC, how it`s deployed (flooded or sealed) and how it`s orientated to the sonar beam; if it`s flooded (open ended and full of water) and verticle it can be hard to see. At an angle or raised slightly off the bottom should make them easier to "see'...a "Friend" recently dropped a cement block with PVC cement into the holes at varios angles into his Grand fathers private lake right off the rear of the boat and all we could make out was the block! Unit is an older Hummimgbird, but in 12 fow you`d think the PVC would have been visible...
being smooth and round scatters the sonar return. You can see them fine when they get covered with mud and algae. I put some in made out of 5" square PVC fence posts and sonar showed them like it was TV...just couldn't see much of the round "branches".

I would have to believe they will show up. I'm gonna drop some pvc this weekend and also
going to try out my hummingbird downimaging depth finder. If I can get the boat to start,
and figure out how to use the depthfinder, I should be able to see whats going on.

On the older or less expensive depth finders PVC seldom shows up. When I sink my "brushpiles" I waypoint them with my handheld GPS because my Bottom Line depth finder will not see them. I use the black plastic pipe that is used to run water lines. I bought a 100' roll that was damaged in shipment and it has made dozens of plastic brushpiles both in Kentucky Lake and my own ponds.
Mark 'em with a GPS when you drop 'em...just in case.:o
Technology is always evolving; anyone rember the 1st "cell phones"? Rumor has it that sonar units are being developed that are "phased"; 1 mode is ENTIRELY passive...it finds fish by trying to HEAR them underwater with no active "pinging"...like trying to hear a submerged submarine, but MUCH harder...but the SMART money says they`ll eventually succeed...the 1st units will marginally work, and will cost a fortune, but given time...it`s gonna get alot TOUGHER to be a "keeper" fish...
Most people are using the factory setting on there units, and not finding the PVC. But adjust and up the power of the returns and everyone of the units from the cheap to the SI units show it. But again you have to increase the power to make it show up good. If I can find them I have some screen shots I saved showing PVC condo's I made and put out.

Just to make sure I can find the structure I always zip tie a beer can to the structure. Gives me a reason to drink beer :-)
On shallow water verticle structure has little return on low end depthfinders. Stakebeds show up less than brushpiles and both wood. Horizontal structure has more surface area to see. PVC is the same verticle pipes have little surface area to return signal.
All valid points to consider...
It seems to me that a depthfinder would pick it up.
water type and clarity seems to make a difference in how the units are perceived from different brand sonar units.

Dropped 3 fishidings Sunday with their locator floats attached. Marked them on HB 798 and went back to them using gps 3 different times. Found location and markers but can't see them yet.
Am no expert, but assuming sonar is similar to radar (operating in a much denser enviroment), your "target`s" orientation to the sonar beam generally will be better approaching and receding than when directly overhead, assuming they are standing straight up. DO keep in mind that the PVC`s density, water temps, and the type of beam ALL can effect their "visibility". Even with SI, they are going to be small "targets' when directly over them unless you bend a few sections horizontal...
