Times R tuff on Ky Lake

I told mrdux yesterday that if a man had previously told me that you could stand in a boat in the middle of Blood River on April 9th at around noon, turn 360 degrees looking in every direction and not see another single boat on the water.. I would call that man a liar.

Folks, he wouldn't have been lying yesterday.

I guess most folks were just smarter than us and called it a day before they got sunburned.

I caught a handful with my little girl on Friday but a handful has pretty well been the rule for me this year. If it hadn't been for the good company, yesterday would have largely been a bust.

I've not seen it this bad on the lake in a long, long time.

What was the problem?

i am with ya, been lucky to catch a handful myself, been here a week and two days and might have caught a days limit. i dont know where they are at, tried deep, shallow, flats, and breaks, catch one here and there but usually never two on one spot

25 mph winds and an overnight storm front to start with. We fished from 4 feet to 20 feet and saw lots of fish on the side-scan and fishfinder. They were stacked up on drops and around structure but it's pretty tough trying to structure fish when the boat is being pushed 1.5 mph BACKWARDS with the TM running wide open. No doubt we ended up doing as well or better than most who were in Blood River during the time frame we were. I talked to a buddy this AM and he had the same luck Sat in Big Sandy. With 64 degree water and the water rising, it should be wide open but doesn't seem to be yet.

I just got back home to Ohio.
We fished the north end. Wednesday had 9 keepers, Thursday had 18, Friday had 19 and Saturday we had 28. Size was pretty good too. Big crappie was 2# 4oz. The bite really seemed to pick up for us on Saturday. We had several times we had multiple hook-ups.
What we noticed on Wednesday was the bite was just dead for us. Not just the crappie but also the gills, yellow bass, SM & LM bass even the drum, not many hits at all. The overall fish activity seemed to pick up each day for us.
Even on the north end of the lake the fishing pressure seemed fairly light on Saturday.

All of the decent reports that I have had lately have come from the north end of KY and way south on Barkley. It's been dead as a hammer in the traditional southern hot spots. The water is still pretty stained compared to water on the north.

I've been fishing north end of KY, sledd and the main lake. I usually fish further south but I didnt think I would have this much trouble finding the fish. Got any pointers or advice to share?

I wish that I did. Heck, I wish that I could find them myself on a regular basis.

Just a bad year boys. The fish are as confused as we are. Still some big fish deep. They are just not where they should be given the conditions we have. They're fix'n to make a run though. Should be a good spawn year. Hopefully I live long enough to benefit from it.

Yeah, it's been a tough year for me also, I have been lucky just to catch a few Crappie, here and there, I have not caught any numbers of fish yet this year.


I really hope it picks up soon.

Ya'll come on up to Green River Lake this Sat (Apr 16th) and join us at the Slabfest :eek: :p

We're gonna meet at Holmes Bend ... fish from ~ 8AM-130PM ... clean the catch & start cooking around 2PM (more or less). Spider rigging, longline trolling, casting to cover, drowning minners should be the ticket for that area of the lake. Can't guarantee any MONSTER Crappie ;) ... but, they're in there Thumbs Up you just gotta find'em Doh

Wish I could make it but I gotta head back to the boat Thur. :(

Just got back myself, and in 20 plus years on KY lake I've never seen it like this with water temps in the 60's...We normally limit out this time of year about every time and we barely got one limit in 3 days fishing!! I never saw one gar the whole time..That tells me no eggs have been laid!

Hey Wiskers,
I ran into a friend of yours (at least he said he was) over at Hillman Ferry. He's an older guy (but I guess we all are) said he was a retired truck driver. He said he spends about 6 weeks or so in both the spring and fall each year there. We'd see him at the cleaning table most evenings. I never did get cross the lake this trip.

We fished blood river fri sat sun. Fri we had 14 really nice ones 1.5 lbs average. Sat we had 15 with alot of throwbacks. Sunday we had 15 in about 3 to 4 hours with several throbacks than left for home. Bite was good at first light and right @ dark. Fished stakes from 4 ft to 1.5 ft deep. Went back to crappie cove for a while sun but the wind was to strong and we were only getting little ones there. Marabou char and pink was the best for us. Also everything seemed to come just off the bottom. Sunlight must of drove them down.

Older guy with white hair & a red Ranger? Sure it wasn't a retired fireman. I think my ol'buddy Merrit is over there right now.

Nope, this guy had a center console...aluminum something or another. He said his wife really liked to fish for redears.
I didn't see him our last day there (Saturday). I was going to ask his name. I figured if I asked him too early on, I'd just forget it anyway.
I did see a red Ranger. I didn't see the guy who owned it.

Looks like fishing will be tough there for a while yet. Looks like a lot of rain and storms today according to weatherman. Should be a good spawn this year with all that water and wind keeping fisherman off the lake.

Well we are heading down the 17th to the 23rd and fish Blood river. I know another cold front is coming thru on Friday and if the fish are confused then what am i to do? do you think the fish will make a mad dash to spawn and then pull back. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

We got 3" of flash flooding rain today that is going to drain directly into Blood River. It may very well look like chocolate milk this weekend.

There was water standing and over the road in places today that I've never seen it before.

It was already plenty stained from the last big rains as compared to most of the rest of the lake.

Yeah, it rained very hard here in Murray KY, it looks like this weekend will be cold, so sadly the fishing may not be good again.
