sure but you wont belive ME I smell for them when there bedding
I typically use maggots under a float. I use a 4# main line with a 2 or 3# tippet and a size 14 dry fly hook. I tweak that setup occasionally, but it's my basic rig.
I aint no pro but i fish for them with a #1 hook and a large split shot about a foot above that. Usually on a 5'6" rod. Fishing on the bottom in bout 20" water.Quote:

During spawn, pitching my special 1/32 oz.cricket jig. with cricket or meal worm on 2# fluoro line to spawning areas. Winter, deep water areas with a light (4#) drop-shot rig, #8 mosquito hook with cricket. Most of my fishing is by float tube with fish finder. Dave.Quote:

Deep water I use a 6'6" allstar with 1lb or 2lb line maybe up to 6lb depending on cover, otherwise same set-up no float.
Flipping cyprus trees I use an 8' bnm with 6lb P-Line and a #6 mosquito/octopus with a split shot and thill slider float.
Works for me.
I use the following exclusively
BnM ultralite 8ft
4lb spiderwire mono
small styrofoam float (as indicator only)
#8 long shaft cricket hook
fishing worms, crickets, grass shrimp or waxworms on bottom
Hey Sunfish, What is a mosquito hook? First time I have heard of one. Thanks Jimmy S.
I fish the banks all summer with an ultra lite and beetle spins. I catch a lot of white perch that way too, depending on where I'm at.
A light wire hook by Owner Hooks www.ownerhooks.com great for all types of live bait. Dave.Quote:

I just have a question. I have an ultra lite, and I was just wondering how big of a fish those flimsey things can actually catch. I want to use it, but i don't want to hook up with a big bass and have it snap in two. i know they eon't have drags, so should i still use it and just back reel if i need to? Thanks if you have any advice.
I've caught a couple 10 pound cats on 4 pound test using a little 4'6" quantum xtralite set up. The rod was rated for 1/64 ounce jig. It handled them fine. I just had to take my time. took about 15 minutes for each one to tire. Leave drag LOOSE so the fish can run and wear himself out. I broke the tip off myself on accident. now I have a BNM Sharpshooter. I like this rod too. CF
You won't break the rod if you use the drag or back reel. The only way you'd break the rod is if you loaded it with heavy line and screwed the drag down tight. Just use the line the rod is rated for.
I landed a 7 lb. largemouth on 2 lb. line and my 4 1/2 foot UL. I've also caught a bunch of 8-10 lb. channel cats on the same rod but with 4 lb. line.
My dad got a 20+ lb. drum on 4 lb. with his 5 foot UL.
ive hardly picked up anything other than my 5' UL with 4# line this year. catching fish on an UL rod is a blast. u just cant muscle the fish like u would with a longer/heavier rod.
I hooked into a 13 lb.buffalo w/4 lb mono & 12ft. B&M crappie pole. I had to play the drag a little, but was not much of a problem as the pole does all the work if you are set up right. I've never broke a pole on a fish. Always other issues involved. Now poor storage, car doors & hatchbacks have claimed their share.
As a side note- I have only returned one pole for replacement. It was a Wally Marshal that had the first guide a little out of line. Anything that has happened to my poles has never been what I considered to be the manufacture's fault.
Personally, I think the overall quality of the rods out there is great!! :D Mike
Falcon Smitty caught a 10 pound striper on four pound test line at Blackshear in January. We ate it at the fish fry. Not bad.
I had a friend catch a 10 pound northern pike on 4# line and a 4' 6" rod.
I like to use a jig and spinner, catches some nice ones and i dont have as many little ones messing with my. I can throw it in the bushes and get it out easy. Its my "bread and butter"!!!!
Tunica, I got to know what you mean by smelling brim? What do they smell like other than fish. I've smelled them nasty moccasins a bunch but don't know that I ever smelled brim on a bed. Please enlighten me, inquiring minds have to know.

When they are shallow and you can find them. Red worms will kill them. I use a thill mini stealth MS-2 1/32 float or smaller with a ice fishing jig and 4# test. If you use a jig(very small) the weight is all on the jig and if the bluegill hit the bait and come up your float will lay on its side and you set the hook. This is about the best float ever for shallow water and it will show all bites. When you throw the bait out and a gill hits it on the fall but doesnt run your float will twitch. You can really learn from watching. The key to gills is often the smalles lure. Crimp a real small piece of shot to the hook or get a ice spoon or jig in size 12.
I fished for many years with bare jigs and have to say red worms catch 3-4X as many fish and require less added lure action by you.
Custom jigs and spins
Turner jones jigs
or make your own.
Turner make a little #16 1/500th oz jig that will kill anything even little 1" long gills. They really come throught when needing catfish bait fast.
