Opinions on this?
Or...is it not so smart to think there is a way to install a transducer on the trolling motor and just move the 1198c from front to the back as I go between the console and the trolling motor?
Thanks for the input for this new guy!

That is awesome to be put in that perdictment,I would certainly put the 1198 on the console. Go with 898 or lesser on the bow. By moving from back to front,I think would be tiresome after awhile. This is just my opinion.

Thanks for the input!
But...to clarify, it would cost the same to buy 2 898's as it would to buy 1 1198c and move it back and forth. So, which to choose? Big screen, a bit more hassle moving the thing around in the boat...or small screen and have a unit in both places.
2-898's - you will be happy not moving. I got a extra unit from Kenny to solve that moving around problem. Thanks to Kenny!!!!!
Thanks for that input!
Now...I just need someone to help me stop with my pixel envy as that 1198 is so much bigger screen size wise!
(I guess the last thing I want to do is get out there and be squinting at a smaller screen not really seeing things like you would on the 10.4" screen. I have no time logged with any kind of SI unit to go by, as far as personal experience.)
I would go with LowranceThumbs Up
Take your time.. If you can get out on the lake with someone
with a Lowrance.. Do it!
Regards,
Daniel
I am an unhappy 997 Donut owner:mad:
Oh man, don't get me going with that, brother! :)
I was all set to buy the HDS-10 yesterday (as the Lowrance rebate ended then) but after extensive research on this (and many others) forum I decided to go with Humminbird because of reliability, customer service, simplicity of installation, better SI, and also talking extensively to Cabela's employees that have story after story of unhappy Lowrance owners having to send units in for repairs. The only con's I saw with HB was the donut (of course) and a tad less detail with down imaging. I was truly on the fence, but what really pushed me to HB was that over and over there are three camps it seems...happy Lowrance owners, happy HB owners, and then disgruntled Lowrance owners that switched over to HB. I never got vibes from any HB owners (except the donut) that were so unhappy that they switched to Lowrance.
So...the donut...it really comes into play when one is in open water trying to sit on a GPS marker, or when trolling below .5 MPH, is this right? And...is the consensus is that HB could fix this with a software update and (hopefully) will in the future?
Thanks for all the info, fellows.
I'd go with the 1198 and move it around. You can always save up for a different unit up front.
By the way, I move my console unit to the rear when I'm pullin( just started doing this this year ) and its not that big a hassle. Adds a couple of minutes to my setup routine.
If you're constantly moving from location to location, you could just swivel it around
I will tell you my tale about moving unit and let you make up your own mind. last year I bought a HB 788 ci. I got a trolling motor transducer to go along with the normal one. I already had an older HB on the bow, so I though what the heck I can just use the mount just need to wire the new transducer to it. Long story short. It worked great for a few times. But one time I was in the process of moving the unit when I got hit with the wake of a bass boat going by at 65MPH at 5ft. Yep, I dropped the unit into 65 ft of water. Try explaining to the wife why you need $650.oo more money for a unit to repleace the one you dropped in the lake. Save yourself the embarassment and get two units. Switching units on a liquid medium is an accident waiting to happen.
Good point BF. The original poster should probably consider that. I'm not as worried with my setup as the ethernet cable stays plugged in when I make the switch. That cable would have to either break or come unscrewed.
I have a 1197 and I have a puck and transducer on the back of the boat, and a puck and trancducer on the bow. Get you one of those ram mounts and a extra collector for your cables and it takes just a few seconds to move it. And beleive me the larger screen does make a difference. No way I would trade my 1197 for two 898's
You can buy several different puck that will fit your trolling motor.
As for dropping in the water..(haven't tried it) but they are supposed to float. Don't know for sure, but saw a video on this site that shows a fishing show and the guy drops his 1197 over the side and it went down but came back up.
Forgive my ignorance, but what is the puck you refer to? Is that for the GPS?
Also, could you further explain the "extra collector for the cables"?
Thanks!
That's one test that I don't want to try.
The collector is the "connector collector". You can only get it from HB. Or at least I never found anyone that carried them. Puck is the GPS antenna.
Link for connector collector. http://store.humminbird.com/products/323064/540165-2
Gotcha!
And is this the GPS puck?
AS GR16 :: Humminbird
nope. you want this one http://store.humminbird.com/products/269322/AS_GR50
and while your at it, might as well get the PC-11 power cord. http://store.humminbird.com/products/323028/PC_11
Of course, I wouldn't get any of that from HB cepting the connector collector as its the only place I know that has them.
So, not to overlook anything (I'll be installing this weekend, hopefully) all I need is to have a transducer, GPS puck, and 12 volt line at each position...and use a Ram Mount for easy lock and unlock onto the mounts, correct?
Sorry for these 101 questions...but just to triple check things...this'd be the transducer for the trolling motor, right?

You might be pushing it on getting that connector from HB by the weekend. Maybe you can call them rather than website. If you go through the website, it takes a day or two for confirmation. Plus, you're going to scream when you find out how much they want for shipping.
All other stuff may be cheaper through online stores like jandhproducts or bbgmarine. bbgmarine supports this website, so I'd call them first.
The link you have here says it is for the 900 series. Isn't this the cable collector for the 1198C?

Good catch. I wish this would let you go and edit past posts.
I bought a regular transducer and used this shield saver. Transducer Shield and Saver - See More Fish, Catch More Fish! - TM-HDsi
Probably just mo money spent, but it seems sturdy.
Hope this aint confusin.
I actually have 2 - 898's. My 898 at the TM came with a regular transducer and I bought one of the TS&S brackets to mount it.
Currently, I move my console unit from the console to the transom when I pull jigs ( and crankbaits ). I felt that I would miss less if I had everything in my peripheral. ( Cept of course the front of the boat!! )
If I had it all to do over again, I would have bought an 1100 series last year and saved for something else this year. But I wanted SI at both locations and settled for two smaller screens.
Get 2 898's...my wife is always telling me you don't have to have the biggest as long as what you have is big enough to get the job done.
I switched over from HB to Lowrance, Flawhead switched, billbob switched, Jaxsprat switched here lately. There are others.
Don't tell me HB don't have problems. I own one. Interlink and Ethernet rings a bell.
I don't care what people use, but lets remain fair and balanced.
I switched from HB to Lowrance. Part of it was the 2 year warranty, and part donut, and partly because I thought the HB NMEA 2000 network was really lacking over what you can do with Lowrance.
If you compare the full potential of what both units can do, and buy HB. It's because the full potential doesn't interest you, or you listened to some Customer service stories that scared you. People typically don't buy and 1198 over and HDS-10 and LSS-1 based on features and performance, the HB is good, but It's not HDS-10 good.
all units have potential for problems, I own HB and am very happy with them. I bought what I wanted and I am happy with my choice. I just say buy what you want and dont worry bout the masses or the hardcore HB'ers Or the diehard Low owners. its your money, spend it the way you want. one fella was switched by stories that he heard and someone else might be talked in to changing from Low to HB or from HB to Low. some folks take it to a personal level when you down the product they own and dont see it the way they do. I am one of those that just say "be happy with what you buy" and the sun will come out tomorrow LOL
I don't care either maachuu. But, I can be bought....ha
Awight CB, I see ya lurking out there. You've had all day. Did cha get everything ordered?
I agree, but my problem is I am too balanced, because I can't decide which one to go with! :)Quote:

Perhaps some of you fine people who went to Lowrance from HB could expound on the reasons why?
If you want two then get similar models from both then you may have the best of both worlds. MAYBE!
get 2 units,i bought one and was moving it back and forth ,it was a pain,if u where only going to move it like stymie is it would be ok,but from console to bow i didnt like JMHO
Well, I admit I am not afraid to say that I have no idea which way to go on this Lowrance vs HB issue.
I was literally seconds away from pulling the trigger on the HDS-10 yesterday when I called Cabela to see if they'd price match what I'd found. The guy I talked to was so negatively slanted toward Lowrance because what he has seen from customers that have purchased Lowrance that by the time I hung up after 20 minutes I knew I needed to look into this further. And after literally four hours scouring the net (and I am fast at scouring the net) I felt biased toward the HB, but not by much. As stated, the down imaging does look better on the Lowrance. But the stories of poor customer service, along with Lowrance losing the lawsuit with HB, and just people in general being satisfied with HB left me leaning toward the HB. And now that I basically lost $250 as the rebate expired yesterday for the Lowrance, I feel like a Big Waffle for even thinking about looking at it again. Oh, but oh, is there anyone that has logged some serious time with both units that can give an opinion? (That is, the HDS-10 and 1198c)
But anyway, thanks for letting me join the club here, fellows.
Chris
If you can be swayed by someone's feelings about one company or the other, instead of focusing on the features, function, expandability, warranty of the units, then really have clue what you want. When you do decide what you're going to buy, do yourself a favor and buy from a Sponsor, BBG marine. They'll take good care of you, and will certainly be less then cab, or bps.
Instead of scanning the net reading peoples feelings, you really need to go and see for yourself what the units do. Do you have friends that have the units and can show you? That's the best way. If you can catch Chatt at cabelas, he'll give you one heck of a demo of the units.
Well, that is the thing. They basically do the same thing in the grand scheme of things. So...from what I have been educated about, the votes go as follows:
Downscan - Lowrance
Sidescan - HB
Customer Service / General Reputation / American Made / Etc. Last 5 Years - HB
Sonar Plus Downscan Overlay Feature - Lowrance (HB no go here)
Simpler Install / Less Parts To Malfunction - HB
Donut - HB (it has the best and biggest, after all)
Expand From 1 to 2 Units - Lowrance (LSS-1 can feed two screens)
Durability - HB (They float; personal feedback I've gotten)
Easier To Use Out Of the Box - HB
Screen Change Speed / Lag Times - HB
GPS - HB (someone mentioned perhaps the external GPS puck on the HB allows for more precise mounting location resulting in better GPS performance)
Price - N/A (close enough not to influence my decision)
Other things I do not know about is all the extras like the other expandability features, networking units, etc. I know Lowrance has the Sonic Hub and other items that HB does not incorporate, but I am generally focused on which one will treat one best over 5 years of fishing.
Please elaborate and / or correct my findings as I just started this quest yesterday. Currently I fish tournaments with a Garmin 260 Fishfinder; I have a tournament in 2 weeks and I hope to be staring at a screen that'll magically win the tournament for me.
:)
The bigger screen on the 1198 is worth it when you are standing on the front deck or sitting further from the unit. I compromised my judgement and went with a smaller unit. In the end I sold it and went big.
I just have a small HB that I move to the front. I use a wrist strap off of a cordless drill to keep from dropping it in the lake. The unit has two threded holes on the back I used for attaching the safety strap.
