I vote YES. I don't really like to eat fish but love to catch them.
I think it's important to preserve the 13 inch crappie because it gives other anglers a chance to catch a really nice fish. Also the smaller ones are better to eat.
I've thrown back 17's last year
I voted maybe-sometimes I fish for fun, other times for dinner...sometimes keep then decide as I'm leaving....never heard a deer hunter say I'll pass....his rack is too big!
Throw Back
This one went back in the lake right after the pic. It was 16 1/2 inches. Caught it practicing for a tournament on Grenada. Guessed him at 2 3/4 pounds.
The only place a 13 incher should be thrown is in some breading and hot oil!
Check the release area after a major summer tournament, most of the floaters are well over 13 inches.
Am I missing something? Is a 13 a trophy????? Eat it!
We have strip pits over by appleton city and all crappie over 12" go back. We have managed it so that all most each outing some one will caught a 16" or larger. Cant have big fish without letting the nicer fish go.
I try to release most females over 12" in the spring and most all fish over a pound the rest of the year unless I an in a tournament.
Don't misunderstand. I have and will fillet a 16-17 inch crappie in a heart beat. Cut the meat into strips, roll in some Andy's, three and a half minutes at 325 degrees. Then dig in!!!!
13" isn't a rare catch. Eat what you want, throw back what you want. It's up to the angler. They all taste just fine.
Are you talking about fishing a small pond or something?
I have thrown some back when I am having a good day but if I am having trouble putting together a mess for dinner everything will go in the well. I don't tournament fish that often so for the most part I am fishing for a meal and not concerned about leaving the larger fish to catch again to weigh in.
I vote for catch and Release
I would eat a 13", 15-16 i would let go.
I fish all the time so if I already have some fresh fish in the refridegerator to eat then the ones I'm catching are going back for a swim. I've thrown large fish back before. I'll just catch 'em again another day...or maybe some kid will.;) I put a few 12" or 13"ers back yesterday.:p
If I am out fun fishing yes, tournament day probably not depends on what in the box already. I would rather eat a 10"-11" fish best eating in my mind.
Up until a few years ago, 13" on my home lake (Twain) was certainly on the rare side....finally things are turning around and I had the opportunity to throw a stringer of 14-16"'s back last year..... I think it helps (even if it's just to make me feel better)!
U
Since I am mostly pre-fishing I throw them back, meat fishing they go in the box. Its hard saying if it helps or not, Wolf Creek has a 2 fish limit and they have to be 14 or better. Quite a few people have caught there biggest crappie on that lake. But right down the road at Toronto its a 50 fish limit with no size restrictions and that place is loaded with big fish.
Bigger fillets , just as good eatin' as a 10 incher .
13 inches up north is a hog! only caught one up north. ate him. Did catch and release a 14 inch black crappie late nov. 2010.
going in the peanut oil at 350 degrees yep
I have thrown back 13" fish on Pomme, hopefully catch them in a tournament. Any other lake they get released in Lake Canola.
Anything 13 and over goes back in 10-12.5" for eating.
where do I find a 13 incher?
They all get thrown....right into the hot grease!
If I have a limit of 14" and over it definitely goes back. My friends love to eat Crappie so I bring em on back and give em an egg bath and dry em on in cracker crumbs. Then soak em in a hot tub of oils and let em cool on a paper towel and devour them.
I depends on if my wife is with me... She makes me throw back everything because they are "pretty". I have released smaller ones than 13" and bigger than 13", but I do love eating crappie.
Sorry, but they taste soooooo gooooood!
Legal size limit here is 10" so i throw back my fair share of lil fellas to indulge myself in keeper fish :)
This past year we've thrown back anything over 13" on loz with the exception of ones that are hooked deep, its usually not much of a problem to catch the good eaters(10")not to mention we rarely eat fish so we decided to let the big ones live to fight another day, with the amount of eggs the big ones carry versus the smaller fish its a no brainer.
throw back every time
15 and up I'd throw back. Anything below that is dinner.
If my wife was with me, I would throw it back before she saw it.
My vote is yes, I have returned many 10+ and even a 14. A 14 around here is a trophy
