Im about to give a new Minn Kota powerdrive V2 45lb thrust 12 volt 48" shaft a new home. Is this a good motor? not gettin ipilot or copilot yet. maybe in the future...:confused: It will go on my 1550 Lakesport duck boat. please tell me your thoughts. is this a good choice?
It's a good motor. But I don't like the foot pedal worth a flip. I can see it being a reel isue if you plan to single pole structure with it. Add Co-Pilot or better yet, I-Pilot then you'll be in bidness.

please explain wb. never owned a foot controlled tm. only hand controlled. and will primarily be jigging in timber.
The trouble with an electric steer for jigging is this: Say you're going through some timber and fishing a stump as you pass it on your left. Your eyes are on the stump and your line but the boat is coasting forward. With your hand controll, you can turn the motor and hit the button and sense the direction you're turning the boat without looking. With the electric steer, you get no feedback on the direction the motor is turning without looking at the head of the unit. It's just aggrivating for fine tuning boat position while trying to keep an eye on your target, rod and line. Plus, for the PDV2, the buttons are steer left, go and steer right, so you really have to steer, hit go, then steer again. With the terrova, you have those same buttons, but also a traditional heel toe steer and go button so you can do the steer and go at the same time. I had the co-pilot remote on a PDV1 and while it was not as good for single poling as a traditional cable steer or a hand control, I found it OK at least. I hated the foot control and eventually stowed it. With my Terrova, I've brought the foot pedal out and use it only when my hands are full while spider rigging.
Anyway, that's my thoughts. Some single polers have adapted to it and now like it. Mr. Jim comes to mind, although he just went over to an I-Pilot with his V2. Also, I think he spider rigs and pushes cranks more than he single poles. If you're 90% a single pole and 10% troller, you might want to fish with one before you pull the trigger. Now, if you're half and half, it might be a trade off.

What Bro WB said, plus I have my foot control perm. mounted to the deck of my boat. Started as an experiment, and I just kept it that way.
If you don't plan to long line or pull cranks the majority of the time get a MK maxium foot control!
If you single pole fish mostly, you'll hate it. Get another hand control or a cable steer foot control motor.
I single pole a lot and found it was difficult getting used to the v-2. I had to master it or get shot by a mad wife if I didn't. Now I can get around almost as good as i could with a cable steer. Since I troll a lot and single pole it's a good compromise.

ive been thinking of doing same thing. like ideal of not a bunch of cables in way one hand on pole other on net. what about the motor guides tm that is cable free.
