Any rumblings goin on about when the software will be available for ethernet ??

just got my 788ci HD DI and would like to go ethernet instead of interlink

I just downloaded the new update for my 898's. Sweet. There is an extra menu for Network. It senses other connected units and you can tell it which one you want temperature and sonar information from. It also has a setting for a sharing waypoints. Only played with it in the garage. Got the cable in temporarily since I'm going fishing in the morning and didn't want to want to get in there removing everything tonight.

My main focus tomorrow is to catch fish, but I'm sure I'll have some time to play with it.

Thanks Stymie, just went to the site and found the update for the ethernet and I am downloading as I am typing, now just gotta order a ethernet cable, got any idea where best to buy ?? or is it only available at HB ? Are they more than one model of the cable ?

I got mine from Brian at BBGMarine. We actually made the deal while fishing. I was on Wheeler and he was on Allatoona.

Thanks, I can not remember how to find the version of s/w on the 898, can you refresh my memory ? Also, do you leave the update on the sd card once you have updated your unit ? sorry for all the questions but got one more, do you have to have the ethernet cable connected for it to show the additional network settings ?

I take the update off my SD card. I don't think you have to. It looks at the version and compares to the installed version. If they are different, it'll ask you if you want to install.

Not sure about showing current version, maybe when it powers up? I'll look at it tomorrow when I'm out on the lake.

I'm pretty sure the new menu doesn't show up unless you have the ethernet cables hooked up.

Found it.

You need to turn on the Self Test Screen. It tells you the serial number and software version.

Thanks again :) found it and I have the newest version, I also read on the HB site that the network setting dont show up until you connect the units together.

I have the interlink. These questions may have been answered before....but I am unaware of them. What does the ethernet provide that the interlink doesn't? Can I do both?

I think I just found the answer. Can't use both at the same time. I am thinking the main thing the ethernet would do for me over interlink would be to for example make the bow unit read from the back transducer (say I didn't want the SI picture skewed while turning trolling motor). Sound right?

A couple of things to note:
#1- Ethernet and Interlink WILL NOT work at the same time. Whenever an Ethernet cable is hooked up to a unit the Interlink functionality is automatically disabled.
#2- Ethernet will not transfer other accessory information like Weathersense or XM NavWeather
#3- With Interlink we were using Y cables to allow you to plug in both Interlink and GPS. With Ethernet the GPS can be plugged directly into the back of the unit without a Y cable unless you need to connect another accessory like Weathersense or XM Nav Weather.

I keep "5" SD cards with my unit at all times...

1 for current version of software
1 for previous version of software ( in case the current screws up..I can revert)
1 for backed up waypoints
1 for previous recordings
1 blank for recording the day of fishing

SD cards are cheap..compared to the headache of not having the things aforementioned

sytmie, are you connecting a 898 to a 788 ? Im not having any luck finding the cable for the 788 other than maybe at HB site, u got any connections Thumbs Up

i connected two 898's. Bryan at BBGMarine can usually hook you up. Did you call him? If he doesn't have it on hand, he will call around.

Doug on the BBC board hooked me up with Three Rivers Marine and they had both cables, gottem ordered and now justa waitin :)

I already had mine connected. The Networking Tab shows up on the 998 after the software upgrade but no go on the 788. Makes me think they'll have to release an update for that one also.

Not sure why the 788ci HD DI software did not get placed on the website as all the others did. I just checked and it was still not showing on my account either.

Haven't dealt with them. My next suggestion would have been john at jandhproducts.com

I had to order directly from HB once. Ouch! I hate having to pay full price. Besides that, they sent me an email that it was backordered and would take 8 weeks. I was going to cancel but figured I had some time and put it off. The next day I get an email that it shipped!!

There are a few of the Ethernet capable units that did not get the 5.410 software yet. I'm guessing that it will get released real soon, as this should what gets worked on next.

Waypoint sharing is going to be different from the Interlink days. Whichever unit marks a waypoint, that is the unit that stores the waypoint. So if you need to see that waypoint at the other unit #2, you can't power down unit #1.

I'm not sure what you will see if both units have waypoints at the same positions and you have waypoint sharing on.

Software for the 788ci HD and 788ci HD DI units should be on the Humminbird web site.

Only the new 2011 model “HD” model 798 units (798ci HD Si) can be connected via the Ethernet. They need the Ethernet connector – which is different than the other connectors on the units – as well as the internal circuitry and software to support the Ethernet connection.

I would be nice to bring the unit it the the shop or house plug it in with power an Ethernet that is all ready connect to the laptop or computer and view the recording made today. I now have to move the SD card to the computer,transfer then watch and remimber to put the the card back into the HB.

I have only have my 898 for a couple of weeks so I am sure there are a lot of other things things that could be usefull to all of us if we could plug the unit in with power and then connect to to the laptop or computer with enet.
