Night Fishing on Weiss?

Hey guys ill be down from kentucky next monday to fish weiss. Never fished at night there under the lights and was looking for a little info from you experts. I've fished using lights here in Kentucky but usually in the middle of summer. I don't really even know if you should try it at night in march on Weiss? However I will give it a try if some of you guys have ever been successful with it. If so where and what do you look for when trying to find a place to anchor the boat? Coves? Channels? Near the bank? Humps? What lights do you guys recommend? I know its a lot of questions but once again Ill take all the info your willing to give!! Thanks

You will find that once you are identified as a KY angler you won't get very much positive info on here. It's been made very clear to me that the locals don't want us there and were all supposed to be hillbillies that keep every fish they catch and break creel limits. This is often untrue... But no matter what you say, you are guilty.
However I use green fluorescent lights on deep banks near large open areas of water....more water more shad. The rooster bridge will have a lot of activity at night in march. Hope this was some help. Good luck and God bless.

Sounds like you have had some bad experiences on Weiss toddrod! I am a local and enjoy meeting you guys and glad you fish the lake! I have met some of the most obnoxious people in my life on Weiss crappie fishing! I have met just as many rude locals as out of towners! The problem with weiss is people don't know how to keep distance and always helps to atleast say Good Morning or Good Evening! I had a two guys pull right up to me at a bridge here while back "never spoke" and started pitching same hole and eventually over my line! It doesnt matter where you from you need to get off the water if thats your attitude about fishin! As for as breaking creel limits I believe this is changing on Weiss....folks like us on crappie.com have become more concerned and aware of our lakes and have started practicing catch and release when not going in the grease! I would also like to say when you post things like yours above you can expect about zero help from local or any area you put down like that!

Great Post Mepreach...Wiess lake is pimped out way to much for crappie.Try the lakes in Guntersville they run for miles and you can get away from the crowds if you wish.The crappie seem bigger to me ,you may catch more on wiess but they will be smaller..

I am from KY and have been coming to Bay Springs for several years now. I have a small trailor located there and I always cant wait to get there, to fish some but to have a great time with my friends (mostly locals that I have met over the last couple of years) and I can truly say I have been treated like a neighbor by almost anyone that I have met. I have always told my kids that it is hard for someone not to be friendly with you if you show with "honest" intent that you are friendly. We will never be friends with everyone that we meet but if everyone shows a positive attitude, we might be suprised. On another note::::::::::

Never fished Weiss at night but I have been saying for the past couple of years that would be the way to catch them right now. The fish seem to be feeding in the coves alot at night as there are lots of shad in there, especially up river. I would just set-up of the end of some of the points in the coves and see what happens. I bet you can load the boat but I could be wrong.

I recently joined crappie.com, made it clear I was from Kentucky, and received what seems to be good info on fishing weiss and gville from locals, I will say I have to disagree as well because the few times I have been down there fishing everyone seems nice. I have run into guides who make their living helping people catch fish, and when you talk to them they give you helpful info free. People at docks and other fisherman seem to be eager to point you in the right direction. I read a article a few days ago about how much economy these lakes bring in to these communities and how well that makes them embrace out of town anglers. From my expirerience people from Al are better to people from Ky than if it was the other way around.

Thanks for all the info! Its funny because I was just talking to a buddy the other day about how people from Alabama seem to be the nicest people ive ever met in my life. Last spring while I was there I was asked by 3 different people to come over to there house to eat!! I've been treated by nothing but hospitality ever time I've been down. Thanks

Sorry, to hear you had a bad experience in alabama. I have been down there a couple of times over the past 2 years and have had a great time. The locals seem to go out of their way to be helpful.

When I was planning to come down to Weiss last March I posted asking for some info about where to fish. The day I was coming down there was a Crappie Masters tournament that day. I received a PM from Callshy telling me to either call him or meet him at the weigh-in that afternoon. I arrived in time to meet him
at the weigh-in and he was very willing to point me in the right direction, I found out later the place he told me to go was the exact place he had caught his fish
that day. I have been to Alabama for the last 4 years and have always found the locals to be great folks.
By the way Callshy, I just installed 2 sets of your rod holders in my boat last week and I'm looking forward to trying them out soon. Thanks again for your help.

The issue isn't how Alabama folks treat us KY fellows on the water, in the tackle stores, or in the restaurants. The issue is and has been the smack talked on here since 2005 about KY fishermen fishing Guntersville and Weiss. I have only posted 32 times and have been "told off" by so-called locals...on several occasions. One of these locals was from Tenn, and how he considers himself a local is beyond me. I have close friends from Centre and we hunt and fish together several times a year... When they hunt here or we fish there we always have successful trips no matter the weather or how well they bite, or what we kill. I just think that it's a sad thing that it's about where you are from with " some" people. I hope that this site is getting better and I enjoy reading it... However I know that some folks are mistreated by us Ky fishermen on the water... But we are not all the same just because we have KY on our boat.

Hey like I said earlier there are obnoxious folks everywhere! It's how we react or let it get to us that will determine our trip and future ones. I have a saying I pcked up years ago preaching....." Trials will make you better or bitter" I have determined regardless of others actions I will be friendly and helpful if at all possible! I had a guy yesterday on Neely that run right up within casting distance straight in front of me and throwed anchor and marker out. I was longling and he could easily see that, but didnt wait for me to pass! I can't turn that quick with six rods out the sides of boat! Grrrrrrrr! I still spoke to him and wished him a good day! We do not have the power to change anyone but ourselves and thats where it has to start. If each of us on here would make a conscious decision to have a good attitude I think we could make a difference!

GOOD POST MePreach..We all have had our share of rude folks on the rivers I have some great ones but that's another story for another day.

I have been to AL on several occasions and had a good time every time. If there's anyone out here that wouldn't fit in in the deep south, it's someone from the northeast. Most deep southerners don't much care for folks from where I was born. Most of y'all know me and realize that I don't fit in that stereotype. I wasn't born in the south, but I got here as quick as I could. And I still get" you talk funny, you aint from 'round here, areya? With all that said I will say that when I encounter someone who doesn't care for me cuz of where I'm from, I wish them a nice day and move on. Chances are that I can't change their mind on everyone, but I still try to make a positive impression. "Bama has always been good to me , and the fish don't know where I'm from. Buttheads abound on the water and we have to overlook them. Last year I made a resolution to stop stressing about things I couldn't change. I enjoy things a lot more since. If it's "bama that you want to fish, you need to pack and go. Lots of good fishing there. Terry Whaley was my guide when I went 2 years ago and a better man I would be hard pressed to find. Any questions about Weiss would be right up his alley. He's been there since before the lake. Better days ahead........
