I was curious what everyone is using for head cement. I have been using Sally Hansens Hard as nails and the built in brush, but just wanted to see what others are using. any suggestions or recommendations are greatly appreciated.
Thanks

i use super glue most of the time
ok, i may have to try that...
Thanks
Depends on what your doing with it. I just use my home made stuff (Lacquer and thinner) for the drop in the finish that is thinned well so it soaks in and can't be felt. If you clear coating over eyes then I too use Sally's. If your talking about a thread neck jig then I am probably using my home made Flexament.
I feel pretty sure all are i the sticky post above and if not all have been put in post on this board so a simple search will tell if you want these.

Thanks Skip, ill peruse them again
Water based loon head cement
I like Sally Hanson's Hard as Nails but have been reading on another board that I belong to a Crystal Radio board not fishing. They are starting to use a cement for coils that is made up of Acetone and styrofoam peanuts. I will give this a try and report back as this is to about as good as super glue and a little more flexible They claim a little goes along way. We shall see.

I use loons, I tye in my basement and there is no smell to go upstairs to the family.
I use Troutsman's Enterprises All Purpose Head Cement...no smell, no fuss. Great stuff.
I can't believe so many still buy them little bottles of head cement. Can you imagine how many little bottles I am going to get out of a Qt. of high gloss lacquer and a can of my MEK thinner? Life time worth.

I can't believe I am buying little bottles of head cemrnt but I am and I use Sally Hansons Very easy to use dries quick seems to work good for me!!!
Haven't tied any jigs yet. For flies I like Loon Water Base cement. Does the "Hard As Nails" build up on the threads and then dry as a heavy build up? One of the things I like about Loon, or any other fly tying cement, is that it readily soaks into the threads without a lot of build up when it dries.

One thing I can tell you is on your flies if you have a black head there are lots of guys using Sally's Black Extreme Wear and is very good for that. Conversations over of FAOL (fly tying board) where guys ask about Black, it was pretty amazing how many use this one. After all fingernail polish is nothing more than Lacquer, LOL!

my brother uses fingernail polish to paint his jig heads . It's pretty inexpensive if you buy it at the dollar store and you definitely have a rainbow to pick from. I do not use anything or no polish myself but from what I seen it works pretty good. Well really I cannot say I have used florescent green ensemble, my jigs. Mostly to paint thread like you would use had cement.
Hard as nails works for me too.
I use sally for a lot of things, but lately I've changed my ways with good results. I took the bottle of sally and thinned it with lacquer thinner about 50/50 and it soaks in much better than full thickness and sets fast. If I want a glossy coat I hit it a second time with regular thickness. I use a lot of it, but not near what Skip would use. The needle spout bottle helps me get it where it belongs a lot easier.
Thanks for the info!
I don't actually measure it, but I think close to 50/50 as I want it very thin and soak all in the chenille so you can't feel it at all, never. You may start off by trying 60%L/40%thinner. I use MEK because it's a better product than some and you can use it to thin vinyl too. So lots of uses plus really a good size can and probably never need to buy it again or at least 10 years or more. Think I bought 1 Qt. of Clear High Gloss Lacquer and that is all.
Oh and all you need really is one good drop.

My nature to overbuild. Point taken.
I use hard as nails as well
I quit head cement to get rid of the fumes. Used to use the regular head cement from the fly shop, then went to the nail polish, and then super glue. Now am fume free..... I use a loop of 6lb test line on a large button. I wrap over the line loop on the thread collar firmly about a dozen times starting at the rear of the collar and wrapping forward, ending at the jighead.....then cutting the thread with two inches to spare, slipping the end through the line loop and pulling under the wraps to the rear with the button. When it comes out the rear, just snip off. This method works great for a type of whip finish without having to contend with the whip finisher on and around the jighead. Quick, neat and clean.
