My buddy and I are taking our sons to KY lake for some Crappie fishing.
His boat is set up for trolling with jigs or minnows
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I will update when I find out where we are staying. But places to fish and depth of fish would be helpful.
I have never fished KY Lake and I don't think he has either.

jmda, I am taking my 2 boys to Kentucky lake on the 9th-12th. we are staying at Mansard Island Resort. it's 90 a night. we are also having Richard Williams take us out on the 9th. good luck hope the weather is good and the fishing is better.

You'll be in our neck of the woods, crappie10. You'll have a great time with Richard. Have you got a gps? If so, let me know, and we'll try to help you out and send you a few coordinates.
When you find out where you are going, get a map of the area. Big lake, and you can get lost. You will be there while the lake is at winter pool, so take that into account when reading your map. Some spots are pretty shallow at winter pool and that helps send the local outboard mechanics' kids to college. ;)
Be aware of conditions. Big lake, big waves. It can make a 20 foot boat bounce around like a cork. Don't mean to scare you, just be aware.
There are several online fishing reports that will be very helpful when the time gets close. Try http://www.kentuckylake.com/ to start, and check in here.

I really haven't fished KY Lake all that much ... spent most of my time on Barkley (and that was usually in the 3rd week of April). I mostly fished minnow/float setup around buck brush ... or cast Roadrunners/jigs over stumpbeds.
Check out the March results for the two creeks that were used for the Study ... and check out the weather during/around the 2nd week periods, in those March reports (just for comparison to what the weather is/will be during your trip ... and adjust accordingly). You might also want to check out the "maps" links (or even print them out) to see how the conditions affected the positioning of the fish. If nothing else - it will show you some areas to work over. The reports also tell the depths where the "tagged" study fish were hanging around. You can, also, take this info and apply it to other creeks (in the same general portion of the lake) ... just pick creeks with similar features.
And do listen to the advice about running the main lake (big waves on windy days, etc.) - it's much safer to pull out and drive by road, to a different creek, than take a chance on the main lake with a small boat & windy conditions.

We are also likely driving to Blood River rather than taking the boat from where we are staying. That is weather dependent.
He has an 18 ft SeaArk bass boat and has had it on Lake Michigan, but we will have 7 and 11 year old boys with us and would prefer not to have too rough of a ride. SO thanks for that post CatFan
Just read an article in In-Fisherman on fishing with crankbaits for Crappie - I bought a couple at BassPro yesterday and may try some. But we will be trolling with jigs for the most part.
You mean the Wally Marshall cranks? Let me know how those work. I saw those and thought about getting some, but they were new, so I didn't know.Quote:

Im heading down this weekend too,, but Ill be fishing north of jonathan creek,I prefer to stay away from the crowds, since Im just rentinng a little jon boat with a 9.9hp for me an my wife,, I tried to get a guide but all I contacted were booked,, so we are on our own,,, any good places up there to start? this is my first year down there in quite a while,, gps coordinance might help I have a garmin 76,,,

My son and I went out with Richard last year and had a ball. He'll put you on some fish I'm sure. I'll be down there this weekend as well. Tell him his State Trooper buddy in Kentucky said Hi. Might see you on the water. Hope the Thunderstorms don't disrupt things to bad.
After putting our trip off, we finaly decided to head down this weekend also. We will be fishing the blood river area sun- wed. We're staying at Ky beach resort, and will be in a red lund pro-vee 1900 with 3 screwballs in the boat. lol...
We had a good trip. My son wants to go fishing again, so it was a successful father son trip. We kept 23 the first day and 25 + 1 blue gill the second day. Most of the Crappie caught did not need to be measured as they were clearly over 10 inches and close to or over the one pound mark. So we did not catch a lot but they were nice sized. We had 3 or 4 around 1.5 lbs and 1 that was 1.7 lbs.
Also caught and threw back several fish - drum, striper, white bass, yellow bass, blue gill, and large mouth.
We trolled jigs, and from what we could see, that seemed to be working better than what other boats were doing. I saw a 3 or 4 Lund boats, but I do remember a fairly nice red one (so I may have seen you fishn_ia). We had a great time.

Glad it went well. I wondered about the weather down there. We had it pretty rough up here.
We got rained on a little bit on Saturday, but the storms missed us on Sunday. My buddy who does a lot of Crappie fishing felt like the storms moving through did effect the number of fish we were catching. We went long periods without a single bite.

Just got home. Wow what a great time, beatiful weather except for a couple of short rain showers, and a little wind. Learned alot about the lake, and did I feel fairly well for our 1st time on the blood river. We ended up bringing home 72 fish, only a few close to 10" most in that 11-14 range, and I caught 1 white that weighed 2.4 lbs. We probably threw back 20 or so under 10". All the whites were caught on brush piles and deep chanels. The last 2 days we fished mostly banks, caught all blacks at or near spawning. I'll post a few pics when I get them developed. I'd like to give a plug for the resort we stayed at, Kentucky Beach Resort is a well run place. Joe and his wife where excellent hosts while we where there. Hopefully if it works, we'll be back I a few weeks.:)
We had a great time at Mansard Island. It's in a nice area and the boys fished the ponds at the resort after we came in from the lake. We kept 50 crappie and a 3 1/2 lb smallmouth my son caught and wants to get mounted. The storms just missed us too, but it was windy. Our 2 biggest crappie weighed 1-8. There was a lot of laughing and cutting up when we spent the day with Richard Williams.
The boys had fun with him.
