Crappie limit

I think they should lower the limit on crappie to 20 for the state of arkansas.I also would like to see a lenght limit on them as will in all arkansas waters.Only lakes with stunted fish should be allowed more and posted as so.
With the newer trash fish in our waters and with our young crappie having to compet againest more for its food.This may be a :rolleyes:unforseen problem our kids and grandkids may in counter.We may not be able to do nothing about the newer trash fish in our waters but can learn how to control our limits for them to enjoy it too.

Most areas already 20 Crappie, size limits won't help everywhere either. What we need is a lower limit on fish 12'' and longer. No yoyos and a pole limit (2 or maybe 3 per person) . I know alot of folks use 6 to 12 poles here to spider rig. They say we only keep a limit, but kill lots more trolling muiltilpe poles baited with minnows when they swallow the hook. Some even cull fish in hot weather after limiting killing even more. There is nothing that will make everyone happy.
Every lake is different but on Nimrod it is the norm to keep about 1 out of 5 lots of days. Some places have too many small fish.

Turtlebait, applying statewide limits on all lakes won't work. Different lakes have different needs.

i think it should be raised to 50 in this area. sometimes 30 is just not enough and put a size limit if that's what you want at 8 inches and above. thin them out so the others can grow.

We need to control the trash fish that you are referring to. I am all for a Size restriction state wide for the length of crappie. I say we need to go to a 14-11/32" minimum for a keeper crappie and drop the limit to ten per person.Rofl But seriously each lake really needs to be addressed on a lake by lake basis. One rule for every lake will just create a whole new set of scenarios for different lakes. That is obvious because of the shape some of these lakes are in already. And the rules that effect what ever body of water you are referring to must not be working since you are wanting them changed. I agree with you, there needs to be something done to preserve the natural resources for the future generations up coming. Our AGFC has been turned political.

the woodypeckerwood and fish commission has been political since they were appointed. it's a money game. it's a bought position in one way or another. poor people don't get to be a woodypeckerwood commissioner. and they all get some place named after them when they serve their bought position.

do away with yo-yos and 10in min on 25 and5 under10in if your limit is 30 and if your limit is 20 then 15 over 10in and 5 under10in.

Wasn't there a minimum length limit on Nimrod or a couple of other lakes a few years ago? I know that there are a few fishermen that will keep any size fish but most will throw the dinks back. At least I do and hope that others do.

It all needs to be on a lake by lake basis. That being said I wouldn't mind a length limit on Degray....maybe around 10".

I agree with a length limit. I think a 10" minimum would be fine. I'm not trying to start an argument but I don't agree with what everyone is saying about yoyo's. I love yoyo fishing. I think that there should be tighter restrictions on them. What about making it where you have to stay with your yoyos at all times. That's what I always do and it doesn't waste the fish. Just a thought.

thats the way its suppose to be now within sight and sound. the problem with yo-yos is the amount you can have.

Outlaw anything other than a single 10 ft b&m rod paired with a zebco t11 spooled with six pound stren using a black /chartreuse solid body jig fished on a 1/32 canyon jig head and tipped with a single white crappie nibble. People who fish any way other than the way I enjoy are just wrong.

as prolific as they are here in the delta area i think it is like it should be. no size limit at all. and as good as the fishing is right now maybe even take the limit off for a couple of years and do some population control to let the bream and bass have a chance to grow. and that single pole limit that is posted above is just wrong. i'm for a no pole limit.

Size limit works on some lake on others it does not. The 10" limit on Lake Charles did not help the size there. On the big 4 in Mississippi the 12" minimum is working. We need to watch what we wish for on restrictions on how you can fish. PETA loves that.

Creekslick is correct. On some lakes it works and on others it doesn't. I think on a small lake such as Charles the growth gets stunted by the over population of small fish. Over the long term, you take out all the larger fish and only leave the smaller fish which will never reach the minimum length limit.

introduce hybrid stripers. a bunch of them. let them do the population control that's needed on lake charles.

olduckhunter haven't you heard hybrids don't eat crappie they just eat shad.Rofl

whatever they get fat on they are fun to catch. once they eat all the shad they can start on the crappie.

They eat crappie and anything else they can. They are eating machines. I was just being sarcastic because there was a thread on here a while back stating they don't eat crappie.

even a grinnel is fun to catch. they will eat anything. stock them.

There is not a one way fix all solution to the issues on the waters. Besides, with all the opinions out there it becomes a stalemate. Just get 100 gentlemen together and ask which fish tastes best and you will not have a consensus!!! i.e. same as above

Having fished in some lakes with minimum lenght limits and enjoyed catching some big crappie, I feel that many lakes would benefit from this being inacted! However, I never could figure out what diference it made if a man caught a limit of crappie, with minnows, how many poles he did it with. I know some people are offended by trolling and spider rigging, but I would think they are no worse on the fisheries than yoyo's have been, and they have been around all my life.

I could not agree more a limit is a limit if I catch them a single pole jigging or if I have out 8 poles pulling crank baits or 8 poles out spider-rigging.

I think we should work with the people we pay, the game and fish guys, and let them do their job.

The whole key is "a limit is a limit" no matter how you catch them! You got guys that go every day and if they catch ten a day for 5 days, and then you got me, I go once a month and run yo-yo's and get one limit.

Now who catches more? Are you not to have over two days limit at any one time?

I don't have a problem with size limits. But I do think some lake can have to many crappie, therefore not going into any size.

Why don't we ask Ben to tell us about it?

I've got to agree with Slipcork. They do a lot more than we think.It's our job to keep them informed,and their's to look at how to make a difference. The lakes I fish are all different. I lived on Greers Ferry for 6 yr. and watched Carl Perrin come up regular.He did a lot of studying on fish in lake. I've caught more Crappie in last two years than I did in the whole six I lived there. When we think of AGFG, we think of enforcement, and politics, but they have biologists etc. that know what is going on. The lakes aren't growing as fast as fishermen.We need to find out what we can do to help with structure, etc. to keep them growing.

Caught lots of hybrids on Charles. They may have died off.

after today i'm for the limit being raised to 75. goodness. must have been "before the front" deal.

I've been fishing Sardis lake in North Mississippi for the last 15 years. We moved to Grenada the last three years because the size and quantity was down. Since they went to the 12" minimum about 3 or 4 years ago and people are catching limits of 2lb crappie regularly. I know this want happen everywhere, but I think it would help lakes like Beaver.

Have you just found the fish on Greers or has the crappie fishing just improved the last few years? My family and I started catching crappie on Greers about three yrs ago I don't catch that many but I don't fish that much

That applies to non processed, once in the freezer it does'nt matter. Most retired big time trollers here have a freezer full all the time. I give away and host lots of fish frys every year. What I hate to see is guys that keep several limits of dinks a day and yes some do. Also them minnow trollers who catch 5 limits to keep 1 if fishing alone. Those fish swallow the minners with all those rigs out, you can sometimes trail them by the dead and dying Crappie floating behind. Some cull on the water in high temps knowing the fish thrown back are Turtle bait.

Don't bet the farm on that. It only matters if they don't have a reason to check you. They get a hard one for you it will matter.

Like some have mentioned in this thread we need to be respectful of others ways of fishing. I don't fish yo-yos but think I would like it and done properly it is a good way to fish. I don't troll but plan on learning how this summer. I think both would be fun to do from my kayak. It isn't the way these people are fishing that is unethical it is some people no matter what method they use will be irresponsible and waste our resources.

the law is the possession limit is twice the daily limit. bet there are several, if not more, fishermen that are over the limit and breaking the law. gomer is not too smart but he's right this time.

I think that you shouldn't keep a crappie unless its 10 inches or longer anyway unless you hurt the fish getting the hook out I don't think they will change the state limit or slot size but it everyone would let the little fish go we wouldn't have this problem
