Nothing wrong with them in my opinion as long as they are run regular and are not left hanging when your through.
They can be one of the best ways to spend time fishing with your children and can produce lots of fish. The only problem that I ever really see with them are people not staying with their yoyo's and leaving them out for weeks at a time unchecked. I dont take yoyo's nor do I take fish off of someone elses yoyo's but i will trip them off when i see dried minnows hanging where the water fell out a week earlier and when I see fish heads hanging where turtles have been eating on fish for days. KEEP THEM UP OR TAKE THEM WITH YOU!!!!!
I've never used yoyos but did set limb lines back in Okla. I set them one evening and came back to check/remove them the next morning. I would assume you would use a yoyo the same way. Or set out when you get to the water in the morning and check/remove when you go home in the evening. Do they work good?
Personally,I wish they were banned altogether as most other states (including Texas) do......Louisiana has the most liberal fishing regulations of any state.....Most states have seasons for varouis fish, a lot of states also have a minimum size limit on white perch and a 25 fish limit...
Now for my reasons: Everytime I get on the water at Saline/Larto, within 10 minutes I can show you a dozen or more yo yos that have been left unattended for sometime with dead/dried up fish on them. last time at my camp,a couple of weeks ago, I saw 2 dozen set out, left unattended, there were 5 or 6 dead white perch and one 3 pound bass caught, critters had been eating on the dead fish, they had not been checked in at least a week and all this was within earshot of the boat ramp!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know not all yo yo fishermen are like this, but too many are!!!!
Another thing few ever consider is when one is fishing yo yos this time of the year when fish are moving in the shallows to spawn, they actually destroy more eggs and nests than one would ever realize......the boat pulls up to the yo yo, it is checked and the outboard motor is put in reverse, boat backs away and goes to the next one, prop wash sends a nice cloud of muddy water into the nesting areas and scatters any eggs and destroys any nest in the immediate area, doing way more harm than just catching big fat females full of eggs!!!!!!!!
Way too many people abuse/disregard any ethical fishing using yo yos and do way more harm that one can imagine........
Take some time and look up the rules/regualtions of other states pertaining to white perch and you'll be thankful your in Louisiana!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know they will not be banned anytime soon here, but I would like to see them regulated, something on the order of what's done at Chicot State Park, your allowed 2 dozen per boat, they must be tagged with your name/address and other info and you must stay within reasonble sight of them at all times, that I could live with, for now anyway.......
Same here, just this morning in Saline I observed at least a DOZEN dead fish on unattended yo-yos in one group. I actually had to pull one fish to see, yep it was warm and stiff, ugh. Certainly the law for wanton waste must apply here, if nothing else. I hate to say it here, but next time I see that, I think I'm going to cut them off and let 'em sink ! Grrrrrr... there's just no excuse for that.
I do not approve of using yo yo either. It seems that they are left up all to often un attended. As for me there is no sport in this way of fishing. I feel it goes along with using nets. I do like nets either. But... That is just me. But i fell that la should have lower limits. I fish in texas and 25 fish is plenty for one trip. But as i said that is just imhp!!!!! Later don
I use yo yos to locate fish. I rarely leave them in the water once I find the fish. I'de rather tightline then use the yo yos, but I find they help me find the depths the fish are holding. I don't tie yo yos to trees either. I've made a dozen pvc floats that I use. The yo yo is hung in the center of the float. When it trips I pull it in and slowly move over to the spot to drop a line and fish. I never run my motor while using yo yos, just the trolling motor. If you fish them responsibly they can be helpful, without destroying the environment.
They should only be allowed on your own fishing dock and no where else..for some reason they havent caught on here in the south..which is great..they are a nuisance to fish around also..would love to see them banned state wide...not sure how much fun it would be to set a device that yanks the fish out of the water..i guess i am bias when it comes to this issue...i fish crappie for the sport of it, the thrill of the bite, the thump, the up bite on a cork, or watching the cork pop under not knowing how big the fish will be, man that is crappie fishin..i dream about the bite...i cant sleep the night before just thinkin about catching a slab 2lb plus fish...nothin better
I'm confused...you mean people crappie fish with a yoyo? I've seen them at Bass Pro but haven't seen any on the bayou. I assumed they were used like my limb lines...lay a big hook on the bottom with a large piece of cut bait and try for a huge catfish. Like a mini trotline.
I also wish they were banned.Yo-Yos are not allowed at Poverty Point and are only allowed(25) during the winter months at Chicot.
Can only imagine how good our state would be if we had limits and restrictions like Texas.
I use yoyo's and love them. However, I completely agree that people should be more responsible when using them. They are regulated by each lake and on Darbonne allows you to use 50 and you have to check them every 24 hours. I abide by these rules and have never had fish go to waste on me. I understand why people hate them and it bothers me just as much when I see people abuse them. But there aren't enough law enforcement agents to make people run their yoyo's properly. It's just a matter of personal pride.
My biggest gripe is people think just because they have yoyo's set that it is there area and dont care about other fishermen. This morning at saline, and yesterday evening, I had yoyoers on the bank I was fishing. They totally disregarded the fact that my wife and I were there. They came right on top of us running a 25hp motor pulling up dried up perch off them. They actually pulled in 20 ft in front and behind us.
Bad!!! I have never seen a stretch of yoyos that did not have fish hanging out of the water on them. I wish Louisiana would outlaw them altogether.
I don't like 'em, but I am not jealous of all the folks that have fun with them. Anytime you have the public enjoying freedom, there's going to be some bad apples. One has to accept it or risk taking one's own rights away as well.
JMO,
JBJ
we had the same argument here in the south with gill nets, but the fact is that since they have banned the nets the fishing has improved 1000%..with population increases, fishing pressure has increased 1000%..i am all far less government and laws, but a little commonsense goes a long way..again i say if you have a dock then use them, but putting these things on a thousand trees is just bad for everyone
Hate them. I wish they would be banned. I've seen people run them with their big motors in shallow water, ruining spawning fish beds. I've had people run them right down the bank I am fishing. They should at least be illegal from Feb. thru April.
For years I was an avid yo yo fisher but since I learned to jig fish I really hate to see the yo yo's on the lake I personaly think they are detrimental to the fish at their most vunerable time spawning pre and post thousands are taken out of Erling every spring pole fishing would really be a lot better if they were banned but that is a personal opinion and as long as they are legal and are fished as they are supposed to be fished I have no problem with them.
Noslab.
I did a quick google search on adjoining states for limits/sizes for white perch and this is what I came up with:
Texas: limit 25, with a 10" min.
Mississippi: limit 30,with some lakes no more than 20 under 12inches
Arkansas: state is divided into east/west zone, limit is 20/30 depending on which zone your in
Alabama: limit 30 with a 9" min.
Oklahoma: limit 37
Louisiana: limit 50, no min. length
As you can see, Louisiana is very liberal compared to these nearby states!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Personally, I'd love to see yo yos banned, limit reduced to 25 per person with a 10" minimum length, within 2 years fishing would be fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Personally I don't have a problem with them if certain restrictions were enforced. First, I would love to see a limit of 2 dozen PER BOAT. Second, I would require a tag with name, address, and phone number so that a fine of $50.00 could be levied for each unattended yo yo, and $100.00 for any fish left hanging for more than 1 hour. Third, they would have to be attended within eyesight from the boat and not from land. Last, they would have to be removed when not in use!
If you run them every 3 or 4 hrs fine, if not I don't think you should have them and pick them up when your done. I saw a Blue Heron dead on one last summer, it got caught by the wing, now that was a real shame. I have been know to cut the hook off if I fish the same area for several days after I saw the Heron dead. I think the rules on recreational trot lines and hoop nets have to be tagged with your name, licence number and date set. Trot line also are to have a cotton lead from the tree or limb so if you leave it, it will rot off and go to the bottom. I have seen several sun dried fish at Larto, not sure but I doubt they are any good to eat like that, don't think you could cook enough rice to go with that. My wife and I put a 10" min when the freezer is out of fish and once we start having pretty much in the freezer we go to 12" and 12 to 15 fish limit, mainly because she hasn't learned how to felit them and I don't like cleaning too many. We are lucky enough to get to fish 10 to 12 days a month.
I wish more folks did what you do........at my camp and my brother-in-laws camp next door, we have a 10" min. on white perch and rarely come in with more than 30 fish per boat...some weekends it's normal to have 6 to 8 boats fishing out of the 2 camps, those are our rules and all abide by them.....we catch all we can eat,so there's no need to come in with a ice chest of 6 inch fish!!!!
A few weeks ago, I had one of the most enjoyable fishing trips I've had in a long time, I managed to catch probably 50+ fish in the last 2 hours before dark and kept 15, of the 15, one was 10.5 inches long and all the rest were 12 inches long or better.........I had a blast catching the fish and was more than happy to throw back 8 to 10 inch fish........once I have 10 to 15 slabs in the live well,I'm happy, that's all I need or want to clean at one time.I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've kept more than 25 fish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with the size limits you guys talk about as well as the quantity limits. I was at Larto last weekend and saw way too many people loading the boat with 5" - 6" fish. That's a shame as far as I'm concerned. I think yo-yo's should be banned as well - where's the sport?
I use yoyos exclusively at Chicot State Park. They implement a limited season, from November thru February. You are limited to 24 yoyos. Each yoyo must have your name, boat registration number and the date you set them. You are limited to 48 hours. After that, you are subject to a ticket. And they give'em too. Perhaps the whole state should go to those rules.
I went camping and set yoyos this weekend. The lake is still 2 foot low, but fishable. I caught 1 large bass (4.5 lbs) 3 large white perch and 5 polywog catfish. I did get a report that the bass were biting really well. When I would get into some really shallow water, I could see a number of large wakes of big bass taking off. They have a slot limit over at Chicot. Anything between 14 and 17 inches must be thrown back, so that prevents you from taking very many home.
i love yoyoers why wouldnt i like someone trolling the banks where im fishing with the engine running ...why wouldnt i love someone leaving sac au lait drying out in a bush for three hours. if you want to fish start fishing and stop being lazy
Limiting, banning, controlling. That is the American way these days, so I guess the same should go to the fishing. I think we should probably ban jugs too and don't forget about trot lines. I've had then get tangled up in the prop and on my jigs. Oh, and we should definitely do away with the use of lead sinkers. They're harmful to animals, didn't you know? Their should probably be a strictly enforced speed limit of no more than 35 mph on all state lakes. Those people might hurt themselves speeding around like that. And size limits. Definitely. Why would Anyone want to take home a whole fryer? Don't they know those little bones are dangerous and can get stuck in your throat if your not careful? No No. That should definitely be illegal.
I see now how these things have all contributed to the terrible fishing in Louisiana over the past 30 years. I always thought things were pretty good, but apparently we have the worst fishing holes in a tri state area because we aren't regulated enough. I'm young and a sponge for knowledge, so this thread has indeed opened my eyes to the need of more restriction and enforcement by the WLF. I will be writing my governor on all these matters. <tic>
All I have to say is I like em.
I think your missing the points being made here. I too have fished yo yos, but quit when I had enough for a fish fry (25 to 30 fish), stayed with them and let the little ones go to fight another day, I haven't hung a yo yo in 10 years now and don't intend to....
I'm not for more laws/regualtions, but there are way too many people abusing the use of yo yos and when that happens as with anything else, laws/regualtions need to be put in place....
My grandfather opened a mariner on Spring Bayou in 1953 and had a guide service with 15 guides. He also guided fishermen mostly for white perch year round except during the duck season,I spent my summers as a kid there cleaning fish for the fishermen, the catches coming in day in day out were amazing, you know why??????NO yo yos back then and NO illegal netting back then, that's why.If a fisherman found an illegal net, they cut it to ribbons..They also followed the law religousily and were very selective when fishing as far as little fish go.......You could go out on the water pretty much year round and catch a mess of white perch......
Now, on the last day of duck season, there are at least a dozen boats waiting for 2:01pm to go out and set yo yos, some boats set as many as 100, they leave them out thru March and it's not uncommon to see 1000+ yo yos hanging, yes, that's ONE THOUSAND+.....They completley surround the cypress trees with yo yos till it looks like christmas ornaments hanging!!!!!!!!!! They brag about catching 1500+ white perch in a few short months, you think they eat all those fish?????? I'd say 90% are SOLD!!!!!! Is this fair to the many sport fishermen that use the area??????????????
Like I said, I dsislike regualtions as much as anyone, but sometimes they are needed due to the circumstances.........
You don't have to go far from Phil's Landing to count 100+ yo yos right now.......weekends, you can easily triple that number!!!!!!!!!
Why don't we have a Larto Yo-Yo gathering. If we can get 30 boats and each boat have a hundred yo-yos, we can put 3000 on Larto. I'm thinking we can sew up the whole island and keep anyone else from being able to fish almost any tree on the island. We will put 15 boats running up and down the banks and destroy every spawning area. If any fisherman complains, we will just tell him "this is America". Oh yea, and we can bait them late in the evening and run them the next morning. Putting fish in the boat that have been hanging out of the water for maybe 12 hours or so, they should be delicious.
I enjoy fishing with yo yo's and have no problem with others using them. I do think that with anything they should be used responsibly and with courtesy for others. Every year I look foreward to yo yo season andhope that I have many more to enjoy with my son and friends.
Another slab left to rot....Saline bayou 2-21-11

who is DG I say was look for him and let him know his Yo YO made the fourms ;)
It has been many years since I fished yoyos but I've enjoyed many hours with my sons when they were young fishing yoyos. I'm not sure of the laws now but Arkansas used to require the yoyos tagged with name ETC. and you had to be within sight or sound of them.
DG doesn't know how to let tension off the spring to prevent that from happening. Probably knew several ways to open a beer bottle without an opener.
I yo yo fish with my grandsons, we love to do it. But on D'Arbonne Lake you have to have your name and phone # on the yo yo. The law says that U have to be staying on the lake to fish them. If they check on U and U leave fish on to rot or to be eaten by turtles U are in a peck of trouble. I see nothing wrong with them if fished properly. I would rather catch them on a pole or rod.
