New DO-IT Mold
I got the highest bid on a new (to me) DO-IT mold with 1/16oz and 1/32oz, 8 of each, yeah 16 jigs, 8 on top and 8 on the bottom. I over paid for it by alot but i thought it was great and could not find this mold ANYWHERE. I was going to see if anybody know if these are still being made. Thanks!
-
I was one of the ones that bid that also, I quit at $52. Hope it works well for you. I couldn't find it in their catalog or with any of their distributors that I know of. I'm going to go with a pro mold of each size instead.
-
Its not being made . I have one I bought back in the 70's . You sure wanted that bad . I'll keep my eye out for one skeet. Once and a while I can pick stuff up like that if I know what to look for.
-
I have one and never have poured both sides at the same time.
-
haha sorry about that Skeet. I got it in today and I can't wait to try it out, you can tell it's an older mold too by the looks of it
-
just tried it out.......... its not worth its wieght in crappie poo. the lead runs into the eyes of the hooks and down the shank, the hook are at like a 80 degree angle, and the sprue is very thick
-
Sayre - I almost want to say someone enlarged the hook slot. Even at an angle lead shouldn't be going that far down.
Some of the newer molds coming out are like that. I bought the horsehead mold and ball head collarless and they have 4 on top and 4 on the bottom. It's a PITA when you want to go over a size 4 hook because of the short area between, and as sayre said the tilted hook slots.
I've thought about asking Crazy how much it would be to have the inside edges trimmed back and lengthening (making more of a long oval) where the hook eyes go so as to be able to use bigger hooks.
Thanks for the reminder, I'll send him a photo and of what I want and see how much it will cost.
-
so you're saying that they oversized for a reason and it should not leak lead?
-
If the mold is bleeding lead try turning your temp. down . sometimes that will stop it and reduce flash as well. Just my 2 cents worth.
-
thanks Pondhopper, i'll make another atempt at it tomorrow
-
try bigger hooks...What size are you pouring??
-
-
No they really shouldn't be leaking like that, and Ponds right lead might be too hot. When you put a regular aberdeen jig hook in the slot is it snug in the hook groove or does it move around??? If you've got a bunch of movement someone might have enlarged it for heavier wire hooks.
-
what do you mean by "regular" aberdeen hook. like a normall fishing hook?
-
Eagle claw 570 or 575 or Mustad 32755 or 32756, VMC 9147 are Aberdeen or light wire Jig hooks. I thought maybe someone enlarged the hook slot to allow heavier wire O'Shaughnessy hooks
-
that makes sense. the halves of the sprue are differant, it almost looks like somone put together two differant mold halves together
-
I got an idea earlyer and was wandering what you guys thought. What if i welded over the slots for the hooks and re-cut them myself?
-
I wouldn't go to that trouble . just use a little red High temp silicone. in the slot on one half lay the hook in it let it dry . Pull the hook trim any excess . Do the same to the other half. No sweat do things like that all the time and it won't do further damage to the mold .
-
will silicone hold up to that temp?
-
I haven't had a problem with the high temp red. The lead starts to cool the second you pour and as it travels into the mold. By the time it reaches the hook slot the silicone can withstand it. It will stay a long time in a mold . If you need to get it out for some reason loosen it with gasoline brass brush.
-
are you talking about the red RTV silicone they use for gaskets?
-
Yes , I use it for all kinds of stuff even made some plastics molds with it . If you use it for that add eight or ten drops of water and stir heck out of it. Makes it set up remarkably fast.
-
great! i already have some of that.
-
Well finally got the photo's of the molds the one is the horsehead showing how it's cut both sides and not a whole lot of space between the two sides. If you had it trimmed you'd be taking off the bottom edge of the slot where the crane swivels go. The ball no collar (notice the very small area for the eye of the hook. thats what I had suggested making the eyelet hole longer so if you got hooks with a longer wire which I showed in a previous picture. This mold also could use some metal trimmed off as a size 1 hook doens't allow the mold to close.

I tried loading the mold with hooks and swivels and it really doesn't like to be closed with the way the hooks are angled. Wish they were straight up and down like the pony head mold.

I think I know a guy that has some no. 4 hooks nickle with a long shank P.m. your address and I'll send you a few of the ones I have . They were the original pony head hook. He had several thousand last I knew.
