I just ordered a H.B. 596c HD DI. I am going to mount it up front on the trolling motor. Has anyone had any experience with this unit. If anyone has any tips or info to pass on it would really be appreciated.
Thanks,

The most important thing to remember when mounting the xducer on the TM with any SI or DI unit is the shape of the sonar beam...
The sonar beam is very wide left to right...but very thin front to back...
Try to picture a chinese folding fan opened up directly under your xducer pointing straight down, but perpendicular to the path of the boat....
Turning the xducer with this type of sonar shaped beam xducer can cause skewed images on your screen....
This can be minimized by turning the TM very slowing but you will still have to learn to interpret how the actual images depicted on the screen are relating to the actual bottom....
I think you will love the unit...and post questions on anything ..including how to interpret those images...

I think you are really going to like the Di pict on the 596. Stopped @ bass pro store fri morning, few customers in store, The assist. manager (only guy who really has any smarts on electronics in store) just finished putting out a new 596 & 788 on Display counter. So he & I played with the 596 awhile(45min) That Di display is great 640X640 pixels as we played with background colors we found that no not the normal blue or gold as you sometimes see in adds BUT the brown/lite tan color makes that unit rock!!!!!!!!!!!
As I was starting to leave about 1/2 dozen guys came over to look at Hb & LOw's units & I tell you the sharpness on the 596 just blew them out of the water. That Di shot was the best pict of all the units & brands. And no I do not like HB DONUTS.....;).
Thanks, just what I was wanting to hear. I can't wait till it gets here. If anyone has used one on the water I would like to hear your thoughts also.
Thanks again,
Bigminner
Just got one Saturday at the Bass Pro in Macon, Georgia. In the process of mounting it now. I hope to have it on the water soon. Like Jax said the images in the store were sweet! I'll post up when I actually run it.
Hi ,i recieved same unit from America 2 weeks ago,i'm living in west of Ireland and am a guide fishing the many wild waters .I printed out the pages from the disc and read them twice ,then went unto the lakes,i found after a few day's normal sonar was better set at 200khz,dsi at 455khz,and the split screen was the best to view .dsi showed up any fish as tiny flecks on the screen difficult to make out,the sonar on the top screen showed the shoals of fish excellent.i put switchfire to clear, bottom to structure id,sensitivty to 17.The zoom is excellent. Picture of one Trout i caught beside one of the shoals. It takes a while of trial and error to get it right, but once mastered it is one of the besAttachment 55623tAttachment 55622.Attachment 55621
kenny12,
Welcome, "great pictures", really nice trout. Thanks for the information on the settings. Good pictures of the "2d sonar", how did the "down imaging" work on your lake? This may be a dumb question but do you have crappie in your waters in Ireland?
I have just gotten my new unit mounted but haven't had a chance to take it on the water yet.
It is good to hear from someone from another part of the world.

Hi ,no we have mainly pike, trout, roach, perch, eels, Atlantic salmon. The down image showed rocks and bottom very well , but to find the fish it was neccessary to have the split screen.i'm going to sink some bushes in deep water to c the results as i have not found any yet ,i'll post up the results .
all the way from ireland, outstanding, nice fish, good information. welcome back often
Testing out the hd dsi ,dropped branch overboard.Photos on next page.

Dropped branch overboard.
Very nice. Awesome screen shot.
Looks like the Down Sensitivity was set too high. Try imaging it again but with a lower setting.
Thankyou Greg,i'll try that tommorrow, every little bit of info helps.
When i come into shallow water say 3to 4 ft,the display jumps to 16ft then 19ft etc blinking back and forward ,when i go back out into deeper water i have to switch off and reset to get going again?Thankyou.
Hey great to have you from Ireland kenny12., Greg is that the norm on the Shallow water on kenny12 "s or is that something to adjust by him or in the Df that needs to be looked at by HB ? thinking of getting a DI and want to learn all I can before all the $$$$$$ , lol Thanks
I am having the same thing happen with my 596c HD DI as kenny12. When in shallow water, appx. 4-6 ft. it sometimes starts flashing random depths, like 200-300 ft. and I have to turn it off and it will usually reset itself. It doesn't happen every time but enough to be annoying.
Transducer is on my trolling motor. Is anyone else having this happen? The clarity of this thing is amazing, you talk about seeing whats down there this thing will show it to you.
You guys with the shallow water reading issues on the new DI units:
Your next time out try to move into shallow water again without using the trolling motor and see if it works any better or worse. I just want to make sure that it is not trolling motor interference related. Also try setting the Water Type menu to the “Saltwater” menu setting and see if that helps. I make have to see if someone can make a short Sonar Recording and send it into Engineering to look at. Just make sure you don’t have a second sonar unit on when in shallow water.
Would the DI unit monted on the jackplate interfere with the trolling motor unit? I have never had this happen before with regular sonar.
Thanks Greg, I will try this next time out.
"Correction" I meant to say SI unit mouted on the jackplate.
I have the 597 on the trolling motor(mg) and was having interference problems. It worked fine in 18 to 20 ft of water but when I move to 15 ft and less of water it went haywire. I put p 11 power cable on and there was alot of improvement untill I got into 4 to 6 ft of water then it would mess up again. I then put a piece of rubber between the transducer and the trolling motor and that took care of the problem. It works fine now. I tried these cures from reading other post on interfence problems. The other thing I noticed that if you move the trolling motor to fast it will mess up but I'm still learning how to use it so that might be normal. this is a picture from the first time I used it.

Ment to say if you turn the trolling motor to fast it will mess it up.
This issue could very well be normal because of the shape of the DI sonar beam....
You have to remember that the sonar beam is very narrow front to back...but very wide side to side....
Try to picture a chinese folding fan opened up pointing straight down perpendicular to the xducer....
Turning the TM with this shape sonar beam could cause distorsion in the image that may be seen as something similar to an interference problem....
Rickie
Rickie is right; the DI beam will distort when you turn the trolling motor quickly just like the Si sonar will. In fact the 2D sonar does as well but we are used to it and really don't notice it.
Just got one Thursday.Got it on the little boat, going to try it out this week if gas don't hit $4.00
"Would the DI unit monted on the jackplate interfere with the trolling motor unit? I have never had this happen before with regular sonar.

""Correction" I meant to say SI unit mouted on the jackplate."
No but it could happen the other way around bigminner, but only if the DI unit was turned 90 degrees to the right or left and probably only in deeper water and when over a hard bottom.
does anybody have any pictures of brush piles using the DI, either HB or LOW? I am thinking about getting one in the near future and the only pics i've seen are of standing trees.
The transducer on my boat is positioned on the gunnels away from any motor ,Attachment 56195as seen on pic, beside sonar .still the depth jumps about when i enter shallow water .
I have the 570di and do not have this problem yet. I do know on a trolling motor mount you want the pointed end of transducer toward the front of the motor this looks backwards but will help in shallow water. They say the transducer is two directional but it seems to work better this way. Also to minimize on skewed images when moving trolling motor set screen speed to 1. and run your sensitivity at 9 for the D.I...The 570 is not color so I use the dark screen with the light on 5 on the contrast on 6. The 500 series from humminbird will change the fishing as we see it today. Two reason it affordable and it works greatThumbs Up. It reminds me when the super sixty flasher came out, it change the way people fished back then because they knew what they were fishing.
Fishfryed
Pointed end of xducer goes towards the front....
I think fish meant to set the screen scroll speed to 1 when turning the TM to minimize skewed images....
When just moving the boat in a straight line..set the screen scroll speed to match your boat speed to keep from having "stretched" or "squashed" images...
Rickie
kenny12... glad to have you aboard. Do you have a transom mount transducer? If so don't know if it is feasible to mount it this way. But it can be mounted on the trolling motor with the pointed end toward the front of motor. What I meant about moving was the trolling motor back and fourth like when you are fighting the wind.
Does anyone know if the there is an optional speed sensor for the 596c DI and if so can it measure speed down to the 1.5mp level we need for longlining crappies on the drift??
Sorry is this is considered a highjack of the thread.

Trying to figure out what is going on here ,are there big fish near the bottom?
Also looks a strange arch.Woul i be better with fish id turned off?Just trying to get the machine working to it's best.Thankyou .
As someone mentioned earlier, the down imaging uses a much wider scanning area cone than the traditional 2d sonar. That is why if you split the screen with di and 2d you will see more stuff on the di than 2d. Therefore, use down imaging (adjust setting to WIDE)to help scan the area and switch to 2d to pinpoint the fish/structure. Turn your fish id "ON." Go into your settings and make sure your 2d is frequency is set on 200/83. Adjust your settings so your fish ID shows different color fish on 83 and 200 (Humminbird exclusive feature). See where I am going with this? The 200 beam is a narrower beam, basically directly under the boat. The 83 is a wider beam, which will include stuff to the left and right of boat. The point to all of this is with the fish id ON and color set to show fish in different colors based on which frequency cone the fish are in, will help you determine if the fish are directly under the boat or out to the side.
I hope this helps.
Kenny12 and icemanrrc, please check your private messages.
Sorry to bother you guys, but i just bought a 597ci hd di and was wondering for Crappie fishing would it be better to mount on transom or trolling motor.i'll give u some info to help.
1) I have a 16ft alum lowe boat
2)i have a lowrance 320fishmark now mounted on the back. if i continue to use this would it be better on the front or back. Will it interfere with the humminbird?
3) there was a humminbird guy there and he said that the images can be blurred from mounting on the trolling motor due to movement, from you experience can u manage this and keep it to a minimum?
4)if put on the back how would u place a marker buoy out if you went over soming u wanted to fish. i saw the demo with the way point marker then come back and use it to determine the exact location of the structure. would it be directly under the boat. will the same apply if its on the front.
5)is it better to locate the structure and stuff of interest on the 2d cone the mark and go back with the DI.
6) Final one!! lol what are the best settings to start. i'm hoping this helps locate structure ive seen on the fishmark. i know im dealing with alot more unit here and any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Pete
I would turn off your fish Id and learn to fish without it. Those arches are larger predator fish under a school of baitfish. You can actually see one of them attacking bait.. Make me want to grab a jigging spoon and drop it down in there.....LOL . Incredible detail on those 500/700 units ! Humminbird did a fantastic job engineering these finders. Thanks for your great screen-shots !

YouTube - Sonar picture
When i enter shallow water the unit starts to jump about all different depths,i usually have to switch it off to reset it again ,this is a video i took today.
Kenny12,
Any chance that you got into less than 2 feet of water?
Try setting the Water Type menu to the Saltwater Deep setting and select a higher numerical Surface Clutter menu setting as well.
