I just cleaned 23 Okatibbee crappie and a couple of them had bloody spots in the meat. It could have been caused when I chunked them from the front of the boat to the rear livewell. I don't know, do crappie ever get parasites of some type? I didn't keep the bloody ones just in case. Here's a pic of one of the filets.

Probably just a blood bruise from where they hit the edge of the live well or something when you chunked them
When you get one like that dont eat it put it in a bag and freeze it.Then bring it to spring get together and i will dispose of it for ya.

Ha Ha I figured it might have been a bruise or something. I leave the lid open on the rear livewell and just bank em off of it. The outside skin didn't have any marks on it. It's been so dry this past summer and fall that maybe the crappie have wolves in them.

Maybe put some foam on the underside of the live well lid.
Or put more arc in the toss.

Scott, as long as you do not see the little bugs on the outside attached to the fish like WB is to a free boofay the meat will be fine. I have seen some small spots like that in the meat before, however from the size of them spots I am guessing you throw about a 95 mph fastball also..lol.
I have seen it many times, never hurt me when they went down, or after... BTW, don't break the sack on those eggs, meal em, cook em, good as hushpuppies..
I've never tried crappie caviar. Thanks for the suggestion Gene but I doubt I will try it. LOL

What you do is, dig a hole in the ground about 2ft by 2ft and bout 1 ft deep. Build a good fire with coals and when they turn white, put 2 roofing shingles on it. Meal the crappie caviar and season to taste and place them on the roofing shingles. Next cover the caviar with 2 more shingles, then cover them with the dirt you removed by diging the hole. Let them cook for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, depending on how many you cook(usually 2 dozen), then dig them up, throw them away and eat the roofing shingles...
bet that would be good for Snow geese too EZ. I always suggest the oak stick recipie.
