Help on entering GPS Coordinates on Humminbird 798

Took Humminbird to Lake Lincoln yesterday and was gonna try and enter some GPS spots that the Dept. of Wildlife had posted on the fishing reports from last week.....heres the question.

All the coordinates has a (6) as the third didget from the left to enter into the plotter screen. And to be honest I dont know if its the Lat. or Long. space. But the scale only goes from 0-5.

Gonna look when I get home, I may have just answered my own question. Even though it is the first set of numbers on their web site.....it may actually was suppose to go into the second blank on the screen.

Any Idea's, I'll repost what I find out....:D

Well came home fired up the Humminbird and still can't get the coordinates entered. So its a Email to Humminbird Tech tomorrow....UGH....

I know on Garmin handhelds the W or lon line starts 090 and there is also a period between 2nd and 3rd numbers after that....N 31.68.119 W090.33.363

It all depends on where you are.

Crappie Hunter 2008. Here is how I would do this. Copy and paste each of the coordinates you have into Google Earth. Then export that file as a .GPX file. Then save that file to your desktop. Open Humminbird PC and open the file from the desktop. Take an SD card and insert into your 798 and turn the unit on. This will set up a profile on the card. Take the card back from the unit and put back into your computer and save from Humminbird PC to the SD card. After that simply put the sd card back into the 798 and it will recognize and load the points automatically..
Is that clear as mud?

There are multiple standards for GPS co-ordinates. H'bird and others default to one or the other, but the H'bird is capable of switching to another standard without losing your existing waypoints. The function is somewhere in the menu for the GPS setup. You can switch to that standard, enter the co-ordinates and then switch back or leave it on that standard.

To simplify what WB said...check your format on the gps and make sure your formats between your gps and mdwfp match up.

There's one problem I see with those coords. They are Decimal degrees and not degrees, minutes and seconds. Not sure what your Hbird is set to so be careful

I guess I won't ever figure this crap out. They need to outlaw all of this modern electronic and go back to basic fishing. KISS!

I never learned to do my Garmin 72 either. Some things in life were meant to be enjoyed by a different class of people.
When I try to out-think things like the GPS, I just go to sleep!

$5 Grand??? I remember somebody trying to talk me into a GPS for a Cessna for $400. I almost choked!

A GPS would be handy for lots of reasons.
Way out on water, in flat country, no horizon, a Compass will tell you which way is back! Which is pretty handy thing to know.
But a GPS will bring you back to the Beach within a Few Feet of where you launched the boat into the Surf.
Someday I'll get a grandson out on the lake to show me how to do that!

Reread that Thud, 50 grand. I'm in the office and work at a civil engineering and surveying firm in Jackson. I'm a licensed surveyor and designer. I design site plans for shopping centers, apartment complexes, gas stations things like that and also do design on new subdivisions. Streets, sanitary sewer, Fire protection, detention ponds, heck I can design about anything. Don't ya want to buy some property and build a subdivision? Right now I'm still waiting to get rich so I can buy 300 to 400 acres, then design my own Crappie lake. I just ain't got there YET. A guy came in a year or so ago and had just bought 800 acres of hill country so that's what he was gonna do. Build his own Crappie lake. It's gonna be over over 200 acres in size and over 40 feet deep at the dam so there should be some big Crappie in it in a few years

Sounds like the guy's got a project. Speck has one but he sold it. I guess the fish were too easy to catch.

Guys I just want to say THANKS for helping figure this part out. Had to go into Advance mode in the Setup screen and there is actually 3 formats to enter data. Got that part and it was a snap.... So DD, after the fruitjar Saturday I'll be more than HAPPY to try out your coordinates to make sure I got this down...hahahaha

Civil eh? We referred to you guys as "Gravel Agitators" when I was in school hoping to beat the paradox of "Eat or go to School" with what little money I had to become a Mechanical Engineer. Hunger won that battle.

I met a gal who instructed people in the art of taking old maps and charts, and super imposing that info onto the new map's with a "Drawing pad".
I thought that was really interesting too.

I'm the surveying end of my company but do a good bit of design. Heck, I've had to teach every engineer that's come into my office how we do things. All the paper work for jobs that had wetlands on them, dealing with the COE and EPA FUN STUFF I tell ya
