I just made my reservations at Moor's for March 24,25,26. This will be my first time on Ky lake. I need some friendly advice. I have a Humminbird 798 si. Where do I start looking? Bays, Flats, Channels, Brushpiles in 20 f.o.w?? Who knows what the conditions will be at that time. Good advise can save a lot of time. Thanks.
The bays right there by Moors are good. With your si you'll beable to see some pallets and brush along drops. A kot of the boat houses/docks have brushpiles close to them. Have fun, we'll be down there a month later.

May find them in all of the above depending on the weather. Typically by that time of the year the blacks have started exploring the shallower stuff & the whites are moving into the bays in a little deeper water. A man just has to look around & find out what they are do'n.Quote:

Usually they are not as affected by the fronts at that time cause they are still in a little deeper, more stable water.

Me and my buddies like to fish Johnathon Creek, now thats a ways from Moors by boat, but best I can recall not that far if ya drive it and theres a ramp right off main road. The bank thats past the last cove on right side. We call it the dredge line, theres several large brush piles that we`ve always caught fish off of and we`ve always done well fishing the docks there. One hint though, slip bobbers with minnows or jigs tipped, and let the bobber float under the dock. I`ve actually set in bottem of the boat to see my bobber. Sounds silly, but hey, I`ve caught crappie. GOOD LUCK !!
That I-phone on ATT, heh? Good luck on half the lake getting a signal. I'm speaking of Big Sandy, so maybe it's better up north.
Advice: Mid-march. Run trollers 10-15' deep in 20+ feet of water. There will be "nay sayers" and that's O.K. I'm tellin ya what I do...that early in the year/water temp/water level/etc.

Thanks for all the info. I need to spend some time looking and find a few target before I start fishing. I've learned if you spend a little time serching before you wet a line it can pay off big. I'll also take a hard look at maps to. Thanks again.
I would suggest fishing the eastern side of Ky. lake in Sugar bay, Smith bay, and Higgins bay. Look for down falls if the water is low enough and start in shallow. The Big Black crappie should be in close if the weather and water is right. I would suggest using a 1/32 ,1/16 black or chartreuse pop eye or feather jig. I also like a 1/16, 1/32 weedless chartreuse tube jig.Usually the water is clearer on the east side of the lake and the black crappie like the clearer water.I would fish anywhere from 5ft. to 15ft. and you will probably see a lot of people fishing out deeper but I believe the big black crappie will be up shallow. Of course everything depends on the water temp and how the weather is at that time. Good luck and have fun....!Thumbs Up

Thanks for the information. I thought I had seen some rough water at Watts Barr till I went to Lake Erie in Oct. We would come out of the bay and head north about 5 miles. I had never been in 5 ft waves, crazy. I have a Crestliner 1650 fish hawk it did great, just about got thrown out twice. That was a white knuckle ride.
4ft waves in 5ft of water is the scary part of Kentucky. I've seen stumps on the bottom break the surface in the troughs. Took me an hour to let go of the seat at the ramp:eek:Quote:

Tube Man & I had a "white knuckle ride" on KY Lake :eek: back about 40yrs ago :p Wind was blowing down the lake, towards the dam, creating 4-5ft rollers. We rode across the lake, from Jonathan Creek over to the LBL side ... staying on top of the waves to see where we were headed, and dropping down into the troughs to adjust our direction. Wasn't so bad, when we were on top of the waves Thumbs Up .... but, when we went into the troughs, ALL you could see was WATER (in every direction, except UP :p ). That was a little spooky, to say the least.Quote:

That ride crappiepappy and I took on Ky. lake was in a small 15 ft. hyrasport bass boat with very low sides. Once we got out into it, wasn't much else to do except keep plowing..We were fortunate..Hands Clapping
