Good link maachuu. It's interesting to look at the pics from the SI units.
It works for gill beds. Only reason I bought mine. I have a 987 and a 997, work equally. Very handy in July when beds are way out on main lake (KY and Barkley).

Man! There's really not much doubt about those beds are there? That puts you right on top of 'em if theyre at home.;):)
I can't wait to find some beds on my unit! I been trying to put my two boys on some good beds but have only found smaller bream! I hope my new unit changes my game for the better!
would anybody agree that the deeper the beds, the bigger the gills??
I haven't been able to find any in my home lakes but we don't have very good gills unless lookig for 4 inchers
Pretty dang clear to. Look close and you can see a few beds with fish in them. This is at Lake Ross Barnett down near Mize
one of my nearby lakes starts out relatively narrow, steep-walled and 25-40ft deep. then it widens out to the main portion with several feeder arms. it has decent crappie but the only gills i've caught are in the 6" range. i'm really hoping to find some deep beds on the si too.
Russ Bailey has a good video on his Midwest Crappie site. Richard Williams shows how you can find them and what it looks like when fish are on them. I was surprised to see how far off the bank most of these bluegill beds were.
Very cool images! I need to start saving so I can get a SI unit.
Off the oxbows and coves in the St. Johns River in FL, I used to get into bigger shellcracker and bull bluegill at different times of year. Most related to structure that broke the current but when beds were found we would troll over them and have exceptional days. I've gotten big bulls that I couldn't get my hand around in 2' of water, reliably. I think it's just their comfort zone. The 'crackers off lake Dexter were in 5 fow or more though. Anytime you went. Had a metal boat and you could hear the snailshells hit the boat that were floating after becoming dinner, great fun.
Will say with Side Scan, you see it ALL...
they're really pretty user friendly. there's a simulator function where you can play around in your driveway. that really helped my confidence. if i were going to do something different though, i would put the 998 si on the bow instead of 798 si. bigger screens are definitely better.
I put my 1197 on my bow when i got it late last season. It's like watching a flat screen tv while i fish. I dont use the side scan much up there tho. Use the 997 on the console for that.
Download it early and study before you even get your unit.....

The om is kinda large but I didn't find it overly useful. Water time was the best teacher for me. There is a post on here somewhere that will give some initial settings. I took me awhile to realize chart speed in SI is important for a good picture as I ran it on MAX for sometime.
YouTube -
site has some good instructional videos

Both have good info
I have been able to see several bedding areas with the 797.Can only imagine what the upper end models will do.
what do fish look like on these units thanks for info
On my 797 they show up as white patches. Some of them are what i consider to be be panfish looking.I have been in a school of Gar,and some other bigger fish and I can tell there's a contrast in size and shape.Much like arches on a traditional 2D model.I been fishing in shallow tight coves and creeks, and have had my SI cut down to 25' on each side and my max dept down to 10'.It opens the scrren up,so to speak.I'm sure the guys with the 1197s/98s can see pretty much anything in the water.
Don't fish off beds, its your investment in the future.
