Ever eat fresh water mussells

been thinking about getting into eating them again, use to as a kid, my dad was always eating them on the river bank, I remember it was fun looking and digging for them, anybody ever try to transplant them to a pond?

I remember my mom would boil them for a short time and when the shell opened she would cut the mussell out and them chop it up. then put in onions and stale bread and other stuff and after she washed and cleaned the shells she would put all the fixens back in the shell and close it and bake them. sometimes she would deep fry them. man they was good or at least I remember they were.

Something's been cracking them open and eating them on our dock. I think that now that the lake is down they are easier for the critters to find. Might be a mink, have seen several of them down there.

I have eaten them smoked before, good stuff. I don't know about that raw deal...

If they are anything tasting like oysters I am with Gatorbitu! But then again I said I would never eat mountain oysters either. And after doing the pig, beef and turkey moutain oysters I love them! I used to know some guys over around Preston that always told me there was nothing better than Horse mountain oysters. I have watched them eat them before cooked over a open fire.

Tried the mussells but did'nt like them.can't do the mountain oysters,it's just the thought,I've eaten coon ,groundhog,turtle ,heart,tongue,(no brains and eggs) so you all can have my share

well guys got some for and some against, they is good and good for you, the deep fried ones are my favorite, well as favorite as I can remember. had some pig fries not to long ago, mmmmmm mmmmm squell good, and good for you too.

I have never heard of anyone eating those, but it doesn't surprise me. I tried mountain oysters for the first time a year ago at my father in laws and now I love 'em! I will try about anything as long as it isn't still moving! BTW- I convinced my father in law to try Crappie ceviche.

Been told and read that generally it's not recommended to use raw fresh water fish or mollusks for consumption due to the presence of parasites. Freezing for 24 hours or cooking will take care of them but not raw. There's a reason sushi uses salt water species and the acid in Ceviche isn't adequate by itself. Just my $.02. Happy tummy ache. :D

Ceviche is excellent. The acid basically pickles the fish. I have had some great ceviche in resturants and have made some not so great at home.

But its really worth a try. You eat it cold usually has red onions, jalepenos, cilantro, and somtimes avacado. Kinda like pico de gallo with fish. Very refreshing!

We got plenty of them all over with the lake so low. We heard that all the Wal-Marts in OKC are out of bread, milk and such. Might have to try some mussells before this blizzard is over, their forecasting more snow and possibly 2"-3" of ice here on top of the snow!!! It could get ugly boys!

hence the deep fried in batter, makes them hard,and no snotty.

baked not bad either, cause there chopped up pretty good and baked with bacon,onion,and other stuff you want, cant find moms old recipe but I got it sommers.

ripper been watchin your part of the country looks rough over there. hope it warms up fast and long.

ps I read an article the other day on low water, seems like below pom d tare sp.. the water was and maby is still low and exposing lots of mussells all different kinds too. seems like they wont live to many days out of water.

When the lake level came down this fall there were mussels of several varieties exposed by the thousands, some as big as saucers. I have eaten them in the past and I remember them as gritty, and tough as a boot. Last one I tried we popped it open rolled it in meal and fried it, after we got tired of chewing on it we tossed it in the yard where the dog chewed on it for a few days before giving up. I'll wait for spring and keep grilling crappie fillets.

thats one good thing about childhood memories, you tend to forget the tough ones.
