Hb!
sat, you sure say that with strong conviction :) I am just really confused on which one I want, I must admit I seem to like the Lowrance a slight bit better but I just compared trolling motor mounts and the Low is 39 bux (if I am looking at the right one) and the HB is like 11 bux, gotta think about those things when I am budgeting myself on this purchase
thanks
Lowrance. But a question.....why would you limit your advice from only morning gewbers? There's a bunch more here that are gewbers all day.
Wannabe...
Why not go with HB since you already have a HB 898 then you could link them together.
Interlink allows your units to share waypoint info. Mark a spot on one and it automatically transfers to the other unit. Also will transfer all points in your old unit to the new one.
exactly.....you really need to go with the HB maachuu and then buy the HB interlink and connect them together. That would make it really nice....scout out territory with the 898 mark your way points then get up front and fish them and your waypoints will automatically be on your front FF. Then while your fishing on the front you can mark way points and they will be on your other ff for when you need them there. Just makes good sense to me.
As much as I hate to admit it, I must agree with these gewbers. If you were starting out with new units, I would definately go with the Lowrance units but since you already have a HB 898, you might as well get you a 788c for the front and then interlink them. I will say this, if I ever change out my units, I will go with the Lowrance HDI8's. I just like the screen better.
Also, make sure you get the older model with the lake maps already downloaded. The newer models don't have that feature and you have to buy a lake map card.
The world according to Wannabe:
I'll tell you the truth. HB GPS just about ain't worth having for slow fishing...ie sub crankbait speeds. I don't fish this way very much, but if I had submerged tops I was trying to jig, I wouldn't bother even turning the 997 on to try and locat them. I'd whip out my Garmin and get to work. That's why I run a Lowrance with GPS on the front. I run the 997 on the back on account of I got a deal on it and couldn't pass up the SI ability for the price. Even still, in my ever so humble opinion, Lowrance SI kick H'bird to the curb. Yeah, the interlink transfer of GPS waypoints would be nice, but what's the point of having a waypoint if ya can't get back to it with pinpoint precision the first, second, third, or umpteenth time?
On top of that, assuming we're comparing non HDS units to Hbird GPS capable, the mapping features are the exact same - navionics chips. But if you step up to HDS, then you get insight available, which is head and shoulders above Navionics cards.
Also, what's the point of a FF on the front without GPS or at least the ability to add it later. Get one that is at least capable at a later point.
As it is spoken, so shall it be.

And with all that electronics....Wannabe still just catches one fish. Dadgummit maachuu, you need to listen to me because I catch two fish. :D
ok, lets sayin I move up the next unit that has DI and GPS, can I use the interlink to connect to my external GPS antenna that I have on the 898 ? If Im sitting at the front of the boat and the external GPS ant is on back of boat, I am guessing that when the antenna finds the structure and I am sitting at the front of the boat, the structure is back at the back of the boat by the ant ? is that right ? not at all familiar with this interlink setup at all

Im gonna pull my 587ci off tomorrow and get it put on ebay and see what I can get for it, then I will be able to see what I can afford to buy a little better. as mentioned earlier, I am on a budget (unlike some of you gewbers) so I have to be careful not to go over it to !!!!

Dangum! Even the newbies pot shotting me today!!!!!
Never mind all that. I'm still right about my recommendations. So there.

Budget smudget, let the wife figure it out. That's her job.
Get the internal GPS and don't worry about it, but yeah, I think you have the option of using the external GPS assuming the external is hooked directly to the Interlink instead of the 898. Need to check that with the factory though. But what are you asking for anyhow? I done tolt you to get the Lowrance!
Wannabe...
maachuu......go to this link and click on all the questions and read the answers. Humminbird: America
If you buy the HB 787ci, you will get a color unit with internal antenna. You hook everything up to the interlink and when you are in the front of the boat and mark something, the front unit sends the signal to the satalite(s) above and back to the unit. The only time the antenna on the back will come into play is when you mark something on the 898. They are 2 seperate units connected by the interlink brain.
Looky here....you can't serve two masters......which one you gonna listen to? Me or them H'bird gewbers? Huh, which is it gonnabe?
Wannabe...
I serve the same Master that you do maachuu and your right ... there is a lot of gewbers on here, lol. Forget your budget and save up some more.....crappie fishing is expensive but its fun and its worth it. Most of the time its better to just wait and do it right.
u get the right unit to go with your 898 and u could do the ethernat connection instead of interlink,i need a good deal on a interlink hint hint lol hehe
