Yo Yo's

I'm bored so I'm going to run off at the mouth and maybe even a helpful hint in yo yo'ing.
To be honest I miss yo yo'ing,I see people enjoying the sport even tho they do not know what the heck they are doing.
I'm bored,last year seen four people in a boat setting out yo yo's in front of me.As I trolled up to their first yoyo a fish hit it wow what a show then another throwed and another goood show and number three throwed:eek:another good show.
I'm bored,as I trolled on I finally meet them coming back checking their yoyo's.I say having any luck"we're catching a few was the reply",I say you had three fish on the first three yoyo's but they got off and your hooks are staighten out.They say yeah we have had some more staighten out and figure it was big Bass.I say yeah they are some pretty big bass in here but they are hard to catch most of the time they'll staighten your hook out.They seemed to be enjoying them selfs so I kept my mouth shut as to the way they had their yoyo's hanging.
When I yoyo'ed the first thing I did was cut the tie string off and put on atleast 3ft. of tie string.The other thing I done was either losen or tighten the spring.
I'm bored,as I trolled on I enjoyed watching their yoyo's,sometimes even the wind would throw their yoyo's,sometimes with the wind and a little help from their minner would make for a throwed yoyo.
When I set out yoyo's I try to keep it about 4in. and not more then a foot off surface plus losen or tighten the spring for surface distance.
I'm bored,they had some of their yoyo's three and four feet off water surface.By time they set them down into the water the spring had to be pretty tight.I could hear one throw and a loud snap of the hook hitting the yoyo,,to tight and to far from water surface was the cause for most of them throwing with no fish.
Just maybe one of the guys in that boat will read this and learn how to hang yoyo's as to not lose those big bass.The higher you hang them the more the wind will spin them,the higher the faster the yoyo will spin in the wind,Atleast the minner gets a good spin before he dies.

They seemed to enjoy the thought it was big bass straighten out their hooks,it was the reason I kept my mouth shut.
I just wish I could hook into a bowfin as big as one of their three yoyo's had that day.Seeing a big bowfin on a yoyo hanging four feet from surface is a show to be hold.These guys was ok in my book b/c they kept a eye on them and took all of them up when done fishing.
Just saying learning a few tricks when setting yoyo's they could have enjoyed it even more by landing some of those big bass.How is the time to hang yoyo's.

Na,not board now and sorry to type where the post read I was bored on the water or misread as to the board part on the water.I'm the happiest I can be when on the water...

I told some yoyo'er one time they were hanging the yoyo's to high and was told they'd hang their yoyo's like they wanted and I could hang mine like I wanted.SO I keep my mouth shut and just watch.I'll just keep my mouth shut......

I'm headed to the garage now to retie all my YoYos so no one comes on here making fun of me!! Naw I'm kiddin but you make a good point. Guess I never put much thought into it. Any of y'all like using circle hooks on your cheaters instead of regular J hooks? I started using em last year and had good luck with em

Yeah g'man its not uncommon to get water spashed in your face even tho you try to help even on here.Back in the days I loved yoyo'ing and learned alot in setting and hanging yoyo's,I'm sure I didn't learn all the tricks as to be a knowitall.I still have 80 yoyo's that hasn't been used in years,they'll last forever if taken care of.Could hang,set and bait in just a sec and take them up even faster by useing a slip knot.
I liked building a fire on the bank and running yoyo's after dark......

I have never caught many fish running yo yos but I have always enjoyed doin it. I went the other night with two good friends. It was one of theirs birthday and he wanted to go. I enjoy sitting around a fire more than anything but we run yo yos so we can tell our wives what we are doin lol. I am still using my pa pas yo yos and he passed away 21 years ago. Grand total for the night was one crappie one catfish and one white bass.

Next time you go out at night try setting five or six yoyo's at different deaths,starting at 4in. to 6in. under the surface and going down from there.After you find the death they are biting at you can set all the same,I like useing the larger minnows this time of year.

Nothing beats setting or standing around a fire at night while running yoyo's and listen for a throwed yoyo.

That's a beautiful area of state,we pass through there on our way to Mississippi and have often wondered how the fishin is in that area,we drove down to the landing just off the highway and thought it looked awful fishy......i understand what you're saying about trying to help folks some are just too dang bullheaded to accept it.

I use the floating yo-yo's, so the yo-yo just sits just out of the water. Or I put a big swivel on a 6ft line to tie to a limb if I'm running regular yo-yo's. That way it is just off the water and if I need to exchange it out, I can real fast. I also use a knot like tying a shoe when hanging from a limb. Makes for quick take up.

Yeah I don't haveta drive far to find a place to fish around here,alot of oxbows,rivers and a few lakes.I retired two years ago,spent alot of time fishing here and there and one day I decided to tackle learning how to really fish without many high tec stuff.Rods/reels,plastic,scents and a good TM is all I need.I've spent one year fishing only one slough as to learn it and I have learned it will as to when I say no problem catching a mess.I can go to black river or spring river and catch a mess of KY bass with no problem.Strawberry river for smallies,eleven point and current river for marble eyes.I don't fish for trout b/c they are to easy to catch b/c AG&F keeps it stocked by the 1000's.I'm going to pick a oxbow this year to fish it all year long to learn where,when and what the fish want there.I'm not a knowitall b/c I learn something new it sames everytime I throw a cast.I've order a boat load of new and different plactic as to have not a favorite as if I didn't have enough alreally.I do alot of catch and release to the point I've had other fisherman want to put their cooler in my boat for my throw backs.I want do it b/c I know it will become a had'it but will give anybody a cooler of fish at the end of the day.When I fish I want to fish alday and I'm picky as to what fish goes into the cooler.I'm not a church goer but I think the LORD everyday and even warn him at times if he doesn't start catching his fair share I'll put someone else in the back seat.

Slipcork I knew they had to be others that know how to yoyo,altho I haven't seen every many around here that do.Seeing a yoyo tied off surface 5 or 6 foot high scares me as to what can happen.I tried to set the spring lose or tighten to where it would hold the head of the fish barely out of the water and not hanging 3ft. out,flop off.

turtle, remember if you fish horseshoe down on rainey break at lynn that rattle snakes swim. don't know if i can fish that place again. and they climb trees too.

I see alot of snakes in them trees,even seen a sqirrel throw one out of a tree,most are BIG and LONG old chicken snakes.So for I've been lucky one hasn't droppped out on me or in the boat b/c I no longer look up like I used to.Been fishing shoe and hill for years and still haven't seen a rattler,thank GOD,seen 100's of copperheads and cotton mouths.Every spring they start climbing the tree for bird,duck eggs and young sqirrels.Them old snakes are pretting smart by knowing what trees to climb for bird eggs.I've seen them swim along slowing watching birds fly in and out of a tree and make a bee line to the ones having eggs or young birds.last year one was swimming along and a wood duck flew out of a tree and he was like super snake comong across the water to the tree.I trolled over when he was about 3 feet up the tree and beat them off with a boat paddle.Didn't do no good b/c the next day they were 2 in the nest.Its the reason for my screen name"Turtlebait" when I die I hope I'm fishing and more likely fall out of the boat and turtles will eat me,maybe a bowfin will take a bite or two.

With the long tie string on the yoyo's I used a 5 gallon bucket and put the yoyo inside with the hook hanging on the rim.

turtle, when you see one there will be no doubt in your mind what it is. this one was about 4 ft long and 20 ft from the boat when i first saw it. and they do climb trees so watch about grabbing on to a limb.

Well, I learned a good way to store my yo yos, not to hang them to high, and most importantly, to watch out for snakes. I've learned more about fishing by watching and listening to other people than any of my magazines. The best way I can tell if the fish are biting is when the old men go out to fish.
