Road kill

I read this tip in a magazine a few years ago, and was wondering if anyone has ever done it.
the tip said to get some form of road kill, and hang it in a tree that is in the water. then maggots will begin to live on the body, and slowly fall into the water attracting fish at a slow constant rate.

Sounds funny but it just might work. Don't know if I would go around collecting roadkill to try and catch a few more fish. But hey, different strokes for different folks.

if i remember right i think it was based more for catfishermen, the maggots would bring in bait fish, and the cat fish would come in for the bait fish.
but it should work for just about any species. it sounds like a good way to create a honey hole. but i dont know if i would go through the trouble either.

we have taken dead chickens and put them in a onion sack above the shallow water and did this...When we would bank fish near it we would just hit the limb it was tied to and they would hit the top of the water. And the blue gill bass, crappie would hit them instantly...So it does work

That's a new way of chummin'-never heard that one before but I guess it could work!

Today is a good day, I learned a new trick. I hid a road killed skunk in my co-workers spare tire on a ford ranger once, but I wouldn't hang one where I planned to fish!!!

I get my maggots the old fashioned way: I have Fedex bring them to me. :D

Sounds like a good idea, in theory. I think I'll leave this one up to you guys, though.

Read where it works great for gill fishing. If you do this be sure your roadkill is DOWNWIND!;):D

it would take a big branch to hang an Elk :)

I read in another thread where a feller puched a hole in both ends of canned dog food hung it in a tree..Claimed it worked..

I'm not sure about those methods, but I know this works...

It works, I have done it.... My Father-i law told me about it so we tried.... It worked great for a while too.... Also, went to the dollar store and bought a case of Canned dog food, Nailed a bunch o fholes in it and hung it over the water, ever time the wind would blow a maggot or two would fall out. The fish pile up waiting for the next one to fall.

Remenber you must have a hunting license to pickup a road kill.. And yes it works really good a coon or rabbit r squirel fly's equal maggots

IIRC that was from an article in "Fishing facts" magazine.. I think it was for panfish of all types.. Tried it on my uncles pond one summer, just to see if it'd work.. Took about a week for things to get interesting where I hung the mesh bag full of meat scraps, but it worked.. Unfortunately my uncle wasn't too happy once he found out what I'd done, but once he got into a mess of fish I was a little less worried about geting my butt "tenderised", LOL..

Easy. just bag some chicken livers/gizzards in a panty hose with a few small holes. Tie it up over water. Come back in 2 days and ketch yore mess!

my grandmother taught me to do that, hang a bag of road kill in the tree

she also told me to collect road kill and put it in a burlap sack with a brick or two, then take it to the catfish hole and sink it with a rope tied to it then you wait a couple days and then go fish it

she also so said the older the bait the better the fishing so i always had a few roadkills hanginout on the edge of the farm

oh roadkill also makes good coyote bait for trappin lol

I've heard of catfisher men using road kill for cut bait, but not this.

Ok you'll have me hook. Lol how long dose it take before the worm to start. So if I put some cans out when should I start fishing them?

Take that can of dog food & sink it in your favorite catfish spot-you will have cats within 24 hours-should last for 3 to 5 days depending on holes in can.

Any kind of chumming works. You don't have to go the "roadkill route".

It would work. Like fishing under the catalpa trees down in the Arkansas delta when the worms are thick in those trees. Fish know it and hang around fighting for a easy fat meal. Toss a jig that is dark and about 2"... WHAM! Can't use a bobber.... they hit it too.

think I,ll stick to niblets

in addition to being a source for fish-attracting "bait", roadkill can also provide tasty snacks providing the critter hasn't been "playin' possum" for long

Heard the same thing, makes a crappie hole when the maggots fall in the water. In my private pond i have a place where i set my deer heads so the maggots will wipe them clean wothout rodents getting on them or taking it away

35 or more years ago I used to pick up road kill and cut it up to use as catfish bait. It worked pretty good.:crazy:

It works great . Takes a little time to develop the maggots bluegill really likes it

A dead cat works great. They can die of natural causes or a sacrifice!
