I know this is c.c with basically panfish info, etc.
Does anyone tie hair jigs for the" larger" panfish (bass)? If not does someone know where I can get info and instructions for tying some hair jigs?
Thanks,

I'll see about getting the pictures reuploaded soon.
Hey pbug,
I was thinking of using bucktail. Do you use any other types of hair, fur? What does tighter and stronger mean? More glue , stronger thread ...
Do you have any pics of your jigs? Thanks for your quick reply...

Hey smooth,
Excellent post...

When I tie bucktails for bigger fish I use more sally throughout the tie. Meaning I get to a point that I think it might get a lot of abuse and I hit the thread with some sally, or cement. Most of mine are thread collars and I use a generous amount of sally when complete, and add a second coat if it's a large tie to make it glossy and more resistant to the teeth. I sometimes add a little puff of maribou to the bottom to give the bass jigs a little extra action when working them real slow, like this time of year.
i use a very strong waxed thread and i seal the thread with glue when i tie buck tail jigs for strippers.
when making jigs for smallmouth bass. I make them the same as I do for crappie but they are just bigger.99% of my smallmouth bass are caught on crappie jigs. I would say 1/16oz. in our average size is around 2 pounds to 6 pounds yes on the little itty bitty jigs

I make a lot of kip tails jigs for crappie and some use them all year. Personally I started using them Pre-spawn until they first hit the banks. I never knew they worked so well when it's cold until I tried them last spring.
I also have a lot of colors of fox hair I tie for crappie. I would tie them for bass too, but I just don't get into the bass side, at least not yet.

I use bucktail and for thread I use danvilles 210 and loons hardhead cement. I have had good luck with the thread and cement, I have not had any come apart. I have used a plain jig head that I powder painted myself and tyed with all of the above and used them for fishing for Hybrid Striped Bass in the Ohio River and ran them through the ringer and I have not had one of them come apart also.
I like to use rabbit on bass jigs. Cant beat the action and its plenty durable. Ive caught alot of big mouths on this one. Thats a 2/0 sickle.

Tied larger jigs for smalliers, walleyes, pike etc. for years. Here's a good step by step for a smallie jig

You can also find a bunch on YouTube. When I first started tying them I used a really heavy thread, now I can go with 6/0 fly tying thread or 210 flat waxed nylon. If you try Kevlar make sure you have an old pair of scissors or an old scapel to cut it, and don't wrap it around your fingers for any reason you can cut yourself with it.
