Looks like you guys are on the right track.:D:) Just wish more had gotten involved here while Nimrod was lowered.;)
Hey Slab - Are those male adpters held in the 5 gallon bucket with nuts? Or how?
BillyE
Those are glue caps with a hole drilled in them, then I screwed the Caps to the bucket with alluminum screws, then glued the pipe in the caps.
Man I wish I could have been there. I had plans to be there until the wife got sick. Midnight, worldsworstfisherman, and our friend Dub was there. They were the ones in the long white trout boat. Looks like you guys had some good structures to add. Hate that I missed it. If you guys do it again, let me know and I'll try to make it. Thanks for posting the pics slabs.
Looks like you guy did a great job.
Those are just purty.
I fished the pool yesterday..sorry no pics but it seems the pool is getting a little better..i found one stake bed ..lost a fiew jigs but we managed to catch a fiew..
I heard it was the other way around slabs..and yes i got pretty good at nettin those crappie..verry fiew of my own:D.kev did say it took him years to teach you the ways of catching crappie in gold creek..
Thanks Tater - Iam always looking for a way to make traveling with buckets easy and alter on the water before I sink them. That might be the ticket with the caps and some wet and dry glut with precut poles
BillyE
No problem Billy, it worked realy well for me, and the bucket has just enough flex in the wall of the bucket the they dont break off if you get em in a bind while dropping them over board. They also have bouyancy to them done that way and the limbs float horizontally, if a person wanted the limbs to float up after they have been dropped you could put a cap in the end of the pipe to make it hold air. then all the limbs would float up at a 45 degree angle due to the flex in the wall of the buckets. And if you dont over tighten the alluminum screws they will not tear out of the thin bucket walls either. I also screwed caps inside the bucket on the bottom and glue peices in there as well. then you can use gravel or sand for weight to get it to the bottom without the expens of quick crete.
LOL I can see myself pulling a few slabs off those. It's amazing how much pressure that Gold Creek gets. It takes a licking but keeps on ticking out those big slabs year after year. What a fishing hole. Thanks Guys
Might I ask a dumb question to some of you guys that have fished Conway for years? One of our deer camp members that lives right by the lake was at the boat ramp last year when the G&F tanker truck was dumping crappie into the lake. It was about this time last year, maybe February so I'm curious if this was done to help with the tourney they knew was upcoming or is this something they do periodically? I would think a lake that size would be pretty self-sustaining without needing to stock?? Don't mean to hijack the thread but since we're talking about Conway I thought I'd ask.
They stock crappie every couple of years to help the lake on the year that the spawn is poor, and that has worked out to about every two years where we have a bad spring, also to help with over fishing, Conway is fished really hard for crappie, it needs that little shot in the arm to keep it producing like it does. But ask them to stock a couple hundred thousand Florida strain largemouths in there and they will laugh you under the table, lake Conway was once a very fertile lake, not so much any more, if lake Conway could support trout or walleye or hybrids the agfc would really take good care of it, but as it is they are just limping it along trying to keep it productive.
Seems like our Commission has got more into non comsumptive projects like nature centers and bird watching. The game and fish management seems to be pushed to the back burnners along with enforcement from what is being told on other forums.
Don't believe everything the commission tells either. I was told Saugeyes were not to be stocked in any waters connected to the Arkansas River , but Maumelle and Nimrod both got them. Asked about Florida cross Largemouth Bass for Nimrod, was told it was too far north. They have been stocked in other lakes like Conway this far north ? Never belive anything from anyone connected to the goverment without checking it out. The commission allows private land owners to fence and use our public WMA property which is against the law , yet their adjoining property is posted and we can't set foot on it? This has been reported yet the commission turns a blind eye because of politics. We could be ticketed for riding a ATV on the same land being fenced in and used illegally by private cattle farmers . We need to change the way commissioners are selected in Arkansas and not just for political favors from the govenor.
they spent enough on a "ghost woodpecker." they got took there. bad. even the people from the university admit it now.
Slabsntaters,
Conway has been stocked with Florida's for the past couple of years.
Nimrod,
You’re correct on the saugeye stocking eventhough it has been several years since nimrod recieved any saugeye. This policy is being revised. The policy for stocking florida largmeouth bass is "the stocking of Florida-strain largemouth bass will be restricted to south and east Arkansas below the Ozark and Ouachita highlands fall line and lakes within the Arkansas River valley." However, this is left up to the each district whether they recommend stocking them in a water body. This policy is being revised also.
Hope this info help. Please, realize there are many biologists that work hard for you the angler and then spend alot of their free time fishing too.
Feel free to contact your local biologists with any questions about stocking. We would be glad to talk about stocking or any management efforts.
Jeremy
Thanks for your repley Jeremy.:D
Just wish someone would respond to my questions about private landowners using WMA lands. The Commission knows about it and the lower level folks refuse to talk about it. The main office will not respond as it's been asked. The sports writer for the state paper has been sent the info and will not respond either. Pretty sad when politics let some rich folks do as they please with state lands and poor working stiff are bound by the same laws they are allowed to break.
Looks like alot of folks didnt make it to drop the structure so you should probably just post all the coordinates.;):D Those look great and should hold alot of fish.:)
Hey Slab - With all the structure you guys dropped, How could you not find it. It would be like the blind hog and acorn story. I think I could find some of it with my can-string-sparkplug method. Like I said I cant wait to get down there and lose a 1/2 dozen jigs . See you soon!
BillyE
Billy E come on down, the fishing should be getting hot by now, the wood structures should be starting to hold fish now, the PVC wont be far behind it, it just has to slime over. I spider rig to find the structures, My gps went on the fritz and I lost all of the coordinates, I am buying a new gps before the weekend and I am going to log every single peice of structure in the pool I can find, new and old. So maybe next week I will have the coordinates for the structures without having to hunt for it with a spider rig. The worst thing that happens in the pool is, I see alot of people that dont pick their anchors up when they move their boats around and they get tangled in the structures and drag them away from the spot they were sunk at.
They stocked floridas in mallard lake up here in the northeast corner. Cant get much further north without getting in mo. They also killed the fish in big lake to plant millet for the durn ducks.
the big problem with mallard lake or was and i'm guessing it still is they would drain the lake and kill the fish and then pump it back up by pumping out of the muck ditch. what they were doing is pumping it back full of shad which is the big reason they've had to drain it so many times. it's your tax money at work less brains. there's a move in the ark senate now to get passed a law that would take away the game and fish's woodypeckerwoods power to over see it'self. i think a few years of setting them back in a corner would help. and another thing is select the commissioners in other ways other than how much they have donated to the cause. the cause being who got elected. it is a bought position.
Sorry to hi jack your post, slabsntaters.
Dink Catcher,
You are correct that Florida Largemouth Bass were stocked in the Mallard Lake. They were stocked before the last renovation. Since then, no Florida largemouth bass have been stocked. We do stock northern strain largemouth bass in there. Big Lake is controlled and managed by the UFWS and we don’t have any saying in the management of the fisheries in Big Lake. The draw down at Big Lake might actually help the fish left in the lake by increase the available food supply making them healthier going into this winter.
Olduckhunter,
You are correct, after the renovation, the lake was pumped back up from adjacent ditch. However, the revovation was conducted becuase of the yellow bass. The fish populations are looking good in the lake right now and should continue into the future.
If you have any question about fish management in NE Arkansas, call me (Jeremy Risley) or Sam Henry at 877-972-5438.
Again, sorry to hi-jack this post.
Jeremy
No glad to have you on the board Mojorig, it helps to have someone to defend their position, most of us guys on here have been in the state awhile or most of our lives, we are just stating the way that we have seen things go over the years. I am very familiar with my district biologist in my area of the state and TOM and I dont see eye to eye on alot of the moves that they have made in and around and on lake Conway. The florida stocking is one of the big ones, most of us Conway Bass fisherman know what the lake used to be like, and it is no where close to that any more. Back in the late 70's and early 80's that lake was booming alot of bass over 10lbs was common, now you can fish 7 days a week all spring and summer long and count on one hand how many bass over 5lbs you catch, but that came after several Stockings of several hundred thousand florida bass in the 70's. Now we do good to get 50,000 every couple of years, just enough to keep the water turkeys fed and fat. Lake Conway could be one of the premier fisheries in this state, but never will be because it aint deep enough to support trout, walleye, or hybrids. Once again just stating what it appears to be happening. I do believe the AGFC gets a bad rap some of the times, but with some of the desicions that are made its hard for John Q. public to give credit where it is due.
Nice structures, can't wait to get back to Gold Creek.
