Here is some marribou tails I tied tonite. First time I used it. Does it look alright. I cut a v in some tails others not?? Not for sure how they are suppose to look.

maribou you dont cut v's....only in hackle...dusty 1 thing for sure they do look good...Take and compare them to your first ones you tied...
Pull the fibers off the stem and tie them in instead of the whole feather. Depending on size and quality you'll get 1-2.5 jigs per feather on jigs 1/32nd and over.
What he said. If you notice short strikes, use less length behind the bend of the hook. Always use the tips, never cut to fit once they're tied. Those will work, but the other way is better. You'll see the difference right off. Better movement.Quote:

As far as pleasing to the fisherman's eye...My favorite would be the one in the center on the bottom of the very last picture.
It's the most uniform. But if you think about what exactly you're trying to imitate, baitfish...insect..etc......it really doesn't matter, as long as there's movement. Especially if you consider the most popular colors. And even then I even think too much movement can be bad at some times.
They all look good though, most better than I could ever do also, so enjoy it and then hold on to the pole.

Okay I did some by pulling them out off the stem. That makes things interesting I got feathers everywhere. Also I did some hackle and v'ed it. Does the marribou look better?? Is that what v'ed hackle should look like. I am not for sure on the v'ing part, Jason told me on the phone and skip's slide show it, but still am not for sure on it. I was just using the very tip of the feather before. Is that what you v? the very tip? Or do you cut the very tip off than do a v???

Those are much better and will get you a lot of crappie. When I use hackle I am just using the tip. It gives the most appealing presentation when using hackle IMHO.
I think you have it backwards with the hackle. You want the soft tips, then Skip cuts off the Vs of the butt end and stacks them on to give the tail some body.
one thing for sure you will catch fish on those jigs ,I tie one just like black head orange chenile,orange tail and have caught lots of bluegilll on them
What he said. I use the tip for the first, and if the next section isn't too stiff I cut another. Then I cut 1/4" sections that come out looking like a v. Tie these to the shank, letting them add bulk to the front area of the jig. I sometimes get a feather that is a bit wider than usual and use just the v's for the jig. Works great on 1/32 and smaller. Be patient and think the jig thru before you begin and you'll get some good ideas come to light. Skip has some video's stickied up at the top of the page that might help if you want. I keep my chenille down to about 3 turns and it looks good and doesn't use too much material. Looking good so far.Quote:
