Trout for bait for Big Blue Cat? Your thoughts please.
They eat everything. The WR was caught on carp. Fresh juicy bait put in front of him with the right gear and you have an excellent shot of catching him.
it is illigal to use a game fish for bait here in mo, otherwise, I'd try it.especially if trout are plentiful in your fishin hole. I personally like to use smellier fish like shad, skips and carp.
game fish are illegal in most states, but what about the remains after your done filleting or cleaning them?? Hmmm I wonder. Im gona ask our DNR this, here in WV
Bet it would be good, oily fish. But not legal here in Arkansas.
Trout is sold here for striper bait, although I dont know of anyone using a $6 piece of bait for catfish. Cut herring, carp, or white perch chunks do good. So does a crappie fillet.;)
Yep, trout are legal here in TN. If you have a trout stamp and catch your trout legally, you can slice 'em up, fish 'em whole, or however you choose. But you can also buy live or frozen trout at several bait shops if you don't have your trout stamp. If so, if confronted by a game warden, just save your receipt from the bait dealer and present it to him and you're legal.
I have a friend who fished Watauga Lake in upper East TN for years and used live trout exclusively for catfish and stripers. He got plenty of stripers over 40 lbs and cats over 50, I think mostly using rainbow trout but he may have also used a brookie or two. Got his photo and stories in the TN Sportsman magazine a few times.
Myself, I just go buy the trout live for $2 apiece or $1 frozen, usually about 8" in length. Sometimes I fish them live, but prefer to cut off the head, fish it on a 7/0 hook, then cut off the fins and tail and use the remainder on another line...Saw a while back someone out west, either CA, AZ, OR, or WA State broke a longstanding striper record on a trout head.
Thanks for the replys...Look for Big Blue Pics in the future...
Good luck.;)
I like skipjack heads with guts hanging on it.
Here in Virginia it is illegal to use LIVE game fish. Now you can cut them up and use them all day I suppose.
Good luck
