I was wanting to ask ya do you doctor your powder paint up yourself. Like adding glitter to any of your p. paints. I was wondering if it is safe to do to some of the pro tec I have. Thanks I forgot to add what kind of achohol do you use in your burner or lamp.
You use denatured like from the hardware store in the alcohol lamp. I don't put glitter in my paint at least not yet, but have thogut about it. ProTec sells glitter made to take the heat and fit size wise. I just don't see a big need to add glitter, but I do have about 3 colors that have metal flake in them, like Ruby Slipper or Dragonfly. Some of the paint I have seen glitter in you can still feel it rough like and I didn't especially like that and really don't think it helps sell the fish. I do think it sells fishermen sometime.
Pro Tec also sells some with glitter in it, but it's not much in there and other that make their own use a lot more I think. I have so many color and if I start adding colors with glitter I would need to spend a small fortune to have a separate fluid bed cup of each so I not only don't do that I don't have any plans on doing that. I have just over 40 cups now and for sure don't want 80. This also means I have 40 colors in pound containers that I bought so I really don't want to spend much more on paint. I would never use even close to all of it.
I have done some two color heads, but just playing around. My paint doesn't chip or come off so I am happy with that. I just think putting glitter in paint is for the fishermen, but anything that gives them confidence will help.

Skip did you make or purchas your fluid bed and do you use a paper bag or paper towel or a coffee filter, for your filter. I am looking at either makeing or buying one. This comeing spring I am also going to upgrade into a new vise. The fluid bed is next on the list though. Thanks
I think glitter has the reflective property that could never hurt as far as fishing is concerned, plus I think a lot of people treat it as an extension of their personal art. Haven't experimented with it much but pretty sure it can be mixed in with the clear you use to bulk up your paint. I think the importance just comes in with the size glitter you are adding as far as texture goes. And if you're just doing it for yourself, there's no need to have a seperate cup for every color you have. Have fun with it if you're not trying to make money.

skip where do you order pounds of pro tech??
I get them from the Mfg. I set up accounts a long time back with lots of Mfg.'s and wholesalers and buy from them when ever I can. CSI makes Pro-Tec.Quote:

However I had bought a fluid bed before I ever tried a home made one and I never could get the home made ones to do as well as bought. If you buy them and the cups the filter is in the bottom of the cup, built in. I leave my paint in the cup all the time and keep the surplus in it containers they came in and when the cup get too low I just add some. I make sure to have one cup for each color. I know the bought ones end up costing a lot, but it last and time cleaning is none. Also save time not cleaning and loading a new cup for a new color and I just swap cups to change colors.

Thanks Skip you answered what I wanted to hear, I think I will buy one shortly (Christmas present) this is why this site is great. You know more than I about the fluid beds and fellas on here like your self save people time and money by advice we get from here.Quote:

Might not work for production, but you can also use a clear glitter powder paint top coat. Calls for a "double" dip while the head is hot, but works pretty well. Gotta watch it sometimes, or the glitter can be uneven, but I like it. I've seen about 10 colors of glitter--gold, silver, chartreuse, red, blue, black, holographic gold and silver, green. Don't have to add more basic colors; I'd say with the gold, silver, red, blue, and chartreuse top coat, if you've got 10-15 basic colors, you've just expanded to 50-75 variations.
If you really want to just get the clear and buy the heat type glitter that CSI has and use it. If any of you want some of that I would buy it for you on my next order which will be soon as I still need a pound of one color and a few other things from them.Quote:

Should mention also that Crazy Angler also has Pro Tec I think so maybe check there too for that and I have no clue if he's into the fluid beds with the membrane in the bottom of the cups.

Hey thanks Skip I was thinking about TJ'S today, and I am with ya on the pro tec. I fish the Ohio river in alot of snaggy rocky places and I beat the heck out of the jigs I use and the paint holds very well on the heads I tie.
