Anybody heard of this crap coming from KDFW on wanting to do a "slot" limit on Ky waters? Something about keeping only so many fish over a certain size and so many under? A guy come in work Monday talking about a meeting someone went to over this. Said everyone was really pissed? They do this on Rend Lake in Ill and it is a real hassle.
Haven't heard anything about it, but if it will improve the quality of the crappie I am all for it.
Guys around here still moaning about the 9 inch size limit and it is the best thing they ever did to help these lakes

Let's not let this thread get into another "war" between the pro's & con's of this matter. You got every right to express your opinion ... but NO right to disrespect someone elses (house rules). They need to start enforcing the size limits already in place instead of making a bunch more regulations that many won't adhere to anyway. I still have all of the short fish that I saw cleaned in the trash cans last year stuck in my craw.
Looked at the meeting dates and the ones closest to ky lake are over. Everybody would have to drive to eastern ky to discuss ky lake.
does not make since for this lake. that is a management tool is for lakes that has too many small fish just what they say ky lake does not have right now. rarely works anywhere for any species but it is cheap and sure does stir up the fisherman.
would not be a bad plan to get rid of all these bass though, way to many of them. they did recently say more people should be keeping largemouth to keep population healthy.
I'm not trying to start anything. Just wanted to know if anyone knew anything about it. I'm all for conservation but like quakerstakr said, they don't enforce what they got now. From what I understand, they are wanting to put this in place because of the so called dwindling white crappie population. I'm not seeing the same results they are. I agree that about four years ago it seemed like the whites had dissappeared but I changed my tatics and fishing locations and found them again. For instance, the past month my catch has been 99% whites. Talk to some people that fish lakes with the "slot" limits on them and they will tell you it's no fun! I would have loved to attended the meeting but didn't know about it until it was over.
Another thing-as crappie fisherman, I think everyone of us have a dog in this fight. That's why we all are members here on this website. This forum is the best place to air this stuff out (of course in a civilized manner). With this forum, we can bring attention to this kind of information and let others know what is going on. Now someone who lives close to where the other meetings are going to be held will have somewhat of a heads up. Plus, I love hearing others opinions. Sometimes, in my opinions I have overlooked something and after that is brought to my attention I change my view.
I can't see complicating regulations more,I too would like to know more about what is being proposed. As to helping white crappie, I thought Paul Rister just posted back a few weeks ago that fall sampling showed 50/50 whites and blacks on some bays. I mainly catch whites unless we fish on the north end of the lake. Also don't really believe there is any shortage of small crappie, I've turned loose hundreds of crappie from tiny to 9.75" fish this fall. Hope somebody posts more info.

Sorry, I missed this conversation. The slot limit was one of them many proposals that we heard about in the KDFW Townhall meeting that was held at KY Dam State Park a few weeks ago. Again, we heard mannnnny proposals. And although we will give each one some consideration, because everyone's opinion is important to us...you pay our salary by buying a licenses :) ,
there are some ideas that have already been researched, studied and tried. If there is reason to believe the idea might work at KY and Barkley lakes we will consider it a little harder. But some ideas (i.e., crappie slot limit) have been tried in other lakes and the outcome did not meet the management objectives. Here at our two big lakes, the crappie fishery does not need a slot limit to help it out. That would be the worst thing for it. So, some of you can breath a sign of relief, we are not considering a slot limit for crappie at KY and Barkley lakes.
If you have not read a recent article I wrote about crappie, it is posted under articles on the home page crappie.com. I would be interested in any questions or comments you have about this information.

Thanks for the article on the main page Mr. Rister, helps understand this thread a little better. I understand how cyclic some of our fisheries are and know you are doing your best at two of the best fisheries we have in the state. I don't ever get to fish KY/Barkley but am just as concerned as anyone about ANY fishery in Kentucky because they have the capabilities to supply us statewide with some quality fishing for anyone anywhere in the state. My father used to fish jonathan creek back in the 60's 70's. I take pride in our lakes and river/creek systems and would sacrifice to sustain a great fishery if thats what it took and was the BEST possible solution. I understand everyone has their own opinions and as long as I can fish for them(crappie)and limit my harvest knowing it was for the future sustainability of our fisheries I would be willing along with many others Id bet. I love eating crappie and keeping a limit whenever I can, but I can always keep some bluegill and sauger to eat. I hope fishermen can use good judgement and keep what they need for the next few years and let the fish rebound and then reap the rewards when the amazing 2012 class of fish reaches keeper size.:) I hope we dont have to resort to new creel/slot/embayment regulations on KY/Barkley but if the crappie were in really poor shape then its something that would need to be addressed. Fishermen have the ability to manage a fishery they care about through c/r and reduced harvest of big fish and I know a lot on this forum do that. Reading your article definitely gives some insight into the current fishery and recent cycles and population shifts/changes, and helps understand why some proposals were discussed. Catching the over/harvesters size violators would really help as well, especially during the spawn. The ones abusing the resource with no regards to its future need to be caught , and ENFORCING stiff fines/penalties would be the first step to deter them, but thats a whole different story.:mad: Anyways, good luck to yall lucky enough to fish the Big Lakes, hope ya catch em' .:D

I agree with ekySlabber. I have been boating and fishing for 3 or 4 years at Kentucky lake and I have never seen the C.O. one time. They need to check for violators. The word of that getting around will stop a lot of it.
I have been stoped 3 time in 1 day at the same lake in Illinois by 3 differant C.O.'s thats a little much.

Is there any consideration by the state to increase size limit to 10 inches on the central Ky lakes, Green, Nolin , Rough ?
Just my opinion, I vote quality over quanity .
I don't believe a size limit for crappie has been purposed for Nolin, Rough or Green. They are not in my district, so I don't follow those lakes closely.

As I posted on another thread, we deal with many more game violations than fishing violations, but I can tell you without question that the bulk of our hunting violations come from informant tips. The CO's get calls at home, on their cellphones and get stopped in the Wal-Mart (and my phone rings off the hook) from about the first week of September until about the middle of december to report the neighbor or roadshooter or trespasser who crossed the property line or shot two bucks.
The CO's at Reelfoot are very polite and reasonable and do not swarm the ramps or jump boat to boat checking everyone ten times on a saturday, but you can be sure that if word gets out (and it always does) that someone is busting the limits, they will go after the suspects.
Get to know your officers. They like their jobs and want to enforce the law. They appreciate good tips. On the other hand, they don't really like dealing with whiners who only want to complain on their "competition." If you report areas and times of common violation or violaters, it is my experience that they will do their best to follow up on the cases.
I would guess that 75 percent or more of our citations issued come from some kind of tip.
