None. I am old school and use Kip, or marabou, or hackle, or rubber, or combinations thereof with a little flashabou. That catches me all the fish I need.
If using beaver isn't old school I don't know what is. I don't have trouble catching fish but I do have problem with people that has a closed mind.
I feel the same way. Old timmers used whatever they could find to make a fish catching jig. I don't think you'd find rubber jigs 50 years ago. Haven't tried any beaver, but use a lot of fox. It has tremendious action.
I like it, Stump! I'm assuming it's a lil bit stiff (?) and I think the contrasting action in the tail materials would be great.
Did you "squish" a ball head to get the pill head effect or did you buy/pour 'em as it is?

nice pic...cool jig ,,, nice proportions
Nice tie a fuzzy butt beaver jig. Have used beaver on a few trout flies butnot on a crappie jig. Never can tell it might be one of those sleeper patterns. Sometimes you just have to try a material and see what you can come up with. That one looks like it could be a good bream jig. I might have to dig out that old piece of beaver and have another go at a bream jig or two.
By the way before we had rubber leg material I can remember going to the dime store and buying a bundle of rubber bands to use on some Bluegill bugs I made. Circa 1959. We have came along ways BABY.

I had a guy give me a whole pelt. It is a very soft fur. It has longer hair on the back and the under hair is a lite gray. I just tried a little to see how it would tie and I think it will mix well with other hair and feather. I seen where some of the suppliers sell beaver so I thought maybe some of the other tiers may use some. If someone would like to try a little send me your address in a PM and I will send you a some.
I would think that beaver fur would be soft because it used to be in big demand. You did a great job on that one Ronnie.
My mind is not closed. I just stated my opinion on what works for me in response to your question. Look again closely at your question and my response. You asked who used beaver. I replied no. Then I told you what I use. Not once did I say anything negative about your use of Beaver.
Hey Redman,
I can remember using rubber bands, tiny colored rubber that women would use in their hair, wig hair, craft hair, materials from stoles at the thrift store, pieces of fox and mink and strips from a cotton shirt. They all caught fish.
I am going to pm Stump Hunter and try a little beaver. All I stated was that I never tried it. I apologize if I offended you Stump. I am not "Closed Minded" or "Hard Headed" I do try new things, techniques and materials.
Your beaver is on the way ship. I look forward to seeing the jig you ty.
beaver hair is quite expensive . I do not have a clue on what the market is anymore but I know when I was trapping we were getting up around $65-$80 a pelt in course. It goes on up from there I think beaver hair would be an excellent choice because of its short and it has a natural flow to it in the water and of course the color would be awesome. Many other furbearing animals that we use for fly tying or jig tying are somewhat expensive . I definitely would love to have some skulk but we have plenty of them here but I just don't like the smelly situation . We are thinking about using coyote because there are plenty of them here. Also on wanting to try badger. I would like to get some black bear if we do have any trappers they come to this post . I would truly love to hear from you . Matter fact I think the rest the guys here would also be interested.
Bob,
I saw an old somewhat genuine Davey Crocket hat and what looked like a bear trap and skin at the flea mkt last week. Going tomorrow and see if it is still there. I do have some fox I can send you. Send a pm if you are interested Bob.
Not to hyjack this thread but How many of you will stop and pick up road kill to use in tying. I have to admit that I will do this. But ony with very fresh road kill and NEVER with skunks. My wife would kill me. But possums, Racoons, and even a coyote. I might get lucky one day and get a fox. Birds are another story and will pick up stray feathers but not whole birds.

I also believe if will be better on small flies for brim or trout. I tied one today using it with some olive deer hair and olive chenille with a red head and green eyes. It's hard to hold.
Thats a pretty jig SH
ok folks. Instead of tying a jig head like othere, I tied a #10 hook just to try something different. Should be excellent on bream as well as trout. Thank you Stump Hunter.
