Ok so I mostly troll for crappie and with pretty good success. I plan on starting fishing a little in February and really kicking it in gear in march. What will be the best technique for that time of year. I've never really jigged or casted for crappie. So tips and tricks would be appreciated.

I talked about a rig that I use when crappie fishing and a couple of others use the same technique. I place a small bell sinker on the bottom of my line usally about 1/4 oz. or a little heavier if the current is very strong. I come off the bottom about one foot and tie a lead with a very small swivel and a hook with a minnow or jig and at times I may use two leads minnow and jig.
Most of the time I tight line around brush or within the treetops. I have had great success raising and lowering the line until I get a respond. I place markers on my line to allow me to know the depth I am when I get a hit. Most of the time I get a hit when I lower the line and I may raise it 3-4 ft..
Believe it or not I get hung up too much using a cork. A decent weight allows me to lower and raise the bait and most times I get unhung with a weight on the line. I like to bump the weight off the bottom and than work it toward the surface until I find them.
This is how I fish and at time I may cast. but not often--jigging up and down seems to be the choice for me and easier to use in the treetops or brush.
Slow verticle trolling ( spider rigging) using jigs tipped with minnows over the creek runs leading to the spawning areas work for me.
I have a '92 nitro and use it for fishing and playing some. What would be a good rod holder setup to put on it. I'm thinking about redoing the front so that I can put 2 seats so the wife can sit up front with me. I want to be able to take the rod holders out pretty easily when it's time to play. Any suggestions?

A guy at church today told me that the new Academy Sports store in Texarkanna had some Rod Holders similar to my driftmater ones for $12.00 each.
You could give longlining a shot but I think G has the best idea.:)Quote:

Spider rigging is out of the front of the boat with up to 8 poles in rodholders,longlining is done pulling jigs behind the boat using rodholders mounted either on the side or back of the boat,g3 gave you some great advice for early in the year.Quote:

I see you hail from AR. You have some clear water there too. The wife and I are headed your way, to Greeson, this spring. That's a pretty clear lake as I understand it.
I spider rig with weights of 1/2 to 2oz. depending on the situation. I use 10lb. mono and merely tie small lppos in the line to put a hook or jig on. The 1st hook is about a foot above the weight and the 2nd is 15-18" above the first. Hope it helps.
