Sylvania headlight bulbs?? Jackb need you!

Ok I am setting here on CDC watching the Nascar truck race! Hoping Kyle Busch will wreck!

I keep seeing these commercials for Sylvania headlight bulbs that are supposed to give you up to 50% brighter, up to 40% more downroad visibility and up to 50% more sideroad visibility.

I checked with my Ford dealer parts department and they knew nothing about them. But they did say that some of them would burn the lenses out of some of the Ford pickups.

I am just thinking I would like to try them out due to my age, the amount of driving I do in all kinds of weather, all the night driving and because of all the deer on the highways. Yes I am a nut case I don't care if there is 6 plus inches of snow on the ground if I have some place to go I am going. And I have been known more than once to head out of here at 2:30 am headed for Bucksaw!

I have seen from the website that they have them for the factory fog lights also. Plus there is a online coupon for them.

Jackb what do you think?

Anyone else using them?

Been using the Sylvania silver star for 3 years. Love them. There are lots of aftermarket high powered bulbs out there, but have only tried the silver star. Ford 150. No overheating or discoloring. Excellent color, brightness, but especially like the amount of additional side lighting illuminating ditches and road sides (deer). I have them in all of our vehicles.

I have great lights in my new Nissan truck but my wife has been wanting some of thios style lights for her Durango. After driving home from Springfield last weekend after dark I realize she really does need some help in the headlight department. I will see what everyone says in this thread and go get a set for her. She wants them bad enough she said that would be one thing she would take for Christmas.

Well I think after my trip home tonight from the farms I think I am going to try a set of them. By the website they also have them for Ford factory fog lights!

Plus I found a coupon for a rebate on them!

Your welcome, I looked on Oreilly Auto Parts website and they are less than $30.00 for a pair for my F-250.

So do you want to come to Springfield and install mine for me?

I don't know about your big Ford but some of these headlights can be a real pain to change out.

I missed the call because of my dang phone messing up but Dan left a message and he got these lights installed today on both their truck and explorer. They were out driving around trying them out and said one of the best investments he had made for a vehicle. So they must be great. I am sure he will give another report when they get done trying them out.

Ok here is the report guys! Purchased Sylvania Silverstar Ultra's head light bulbs for PW58's Explorer and the Silver star bulbs for her fog lamps. Would have done Ultra's for both but OReillys would have to had to order the fog light bulbs. The cost was a little over $100.00 with tax. We went out driving around our normal roads. OK she drove and I hung on kind of like one of those Garfield Cats on a window. (JUST LIKE NORMAL!:eek:) She loved them, I loved them! Best investment that we have ever made as an extra on a car or pickup!

Also did the same thing on my pickup! Didn't go out on a test drive due to me kind of having maybe a little over weight load of scrape steel on a trailer hooked to it. But did test the fog lights and head lights in the driveway. Wow can't wait to get it out on the highway. And if they do just half as good as the ones on the Explorer I am going to very happy! I can't wait until the first fog or snow storm I get into! We did notice that you were able to see alot more in the road ditches with and without fog lights and with and without high beams! If it keeps us from hitting one deer it will be worth it! We kind of drove out into the country! NO WE DIDN'T GO PARKING!In town under street lights going down Glenstone we were able to see thru all those darned dead spots! Out on I-44 we noticed that we could both see futher down the highway just on either normal lights or with fog lights!

As far as the install! Her 2004 Explorier was very easy on both the fog and head lights! My pickup (2004 F-250 V-10) the fog lights were a major pain!:mad: No room for anyone with large hands! And my headlights took extra time too because there was no room! Now your Ford pickup maybe different. Problem with the fog lights there was a transmission cooler in the way! Finally my neighbor used a large pair of pliers to get them out.

Well worth the money especially with $15.00 rebate that we will be getting on each the Explorier and my pickup!

The only way to really compare something is to compare something that you do all the time.

Here is PW58's report heading to work this morning at her normal time. She says that she has always felt like that she needed her high beams on to be able to see the road ditches better. But because there is alot of traffic on the highway at this hour of the morning she don't use her high beams. She said that she feels like there is always blind spots that she can't see out on the edges. She expressed that even when passing another car or truck on I-44. Well this morning she said that she didn't feel like she needed her high beams on and she could really see everything very well on low beams.

Glad they are working out for you Dan! Sorry for the late reply but no 'puter at home. I know very little about them and quite honestly just not a big fan of aftermarket applications; that being said if they work thats a good thing. We always get folks in who buy aftermarket accessories, bulbs, air filters etc. and they just don't work. Not to be long winded, but here is an example. OEM air filters are a little pricey at $30 installed. Folks will tell us it's too expensive then go to the parts store and buy a cheapy. The problem stems from the air filter not filling up the air box which then lets in unmetered air. Result? It triggers the check engine light. I figure ALL the major auto makers pay their engineers thousands to design the vehicle and it's parts and I'm just a believer in replacing with original parts. Just my opinion.

I agree with you. Thats one reason that Bill Grant Ford does all of our service work period! I did talk with Bob Hailey the parts manager down there last week and he was having the same trouble seeing as I was. He didn't know anything about them and he has been doing some research about them. He has had several customers ask him about them. I know with this darned diabetes I have sure noticed that my eye sight isn't as good as it used to be at night! LOL it may also be that I am going to be hitting 51 soon! And then again it maybe because I am always using Binoculars on the lake during the hot summer months just to watch the girls in those small swim suits!:eek:

I value your opinion because your a Ford guy and a good old boy. Thats why I always ask you. But sometimes the OEM stuff needs a little help. The normal shocks on my pickup have given me head aches until the parts manager came up with the Off Road shock package shocks and that has seemed to take care of my problems. I pull alot of heavy loads with my F-250. I just hauled in a load of scrap steel last night to Springfield and just my pickup with my 20' gooseneck flatbed weighed in at 14,000 empty. Thank god I only had a little under 6 tons of steel on the trailer. And most people who have a F-250 only run 12,000 to 18,000 pound tags. I run 24,000 pound tags, because even just pulling the 20' cattle trailer, I may have just 10 cows on it and they can run anywhere from 9,000 to 12,000 pounds.

I sure hope santa brings you a new computer for home along with that new wife my friend!

OK just got in, test drove the F-250 tonight. Didn't notice as much difference as I did with her Explorier. I would say that on her Explorier the new lights improved the lighting 100%. I would say on my pickup, (10 ply tires, 85 psi) the new lights improved everything 50% to 75%. The side view is 100% better. My truck sets up alot higher than her Explorier. At the time I purchased it new it stood up as high as a F-350 at that time. I need to really find a very dark night to really give an honest opinion on them. And maybe a little rain storm or fog. I would say after my next trip to Mississippi I will really be able to tell alot more. But I am happy so that is what counts!
