Lowrance HD

Just got the HD and am shocked at how slow the gps is... the boat on the screen is a good one mintue behind the movement of actual boat on water. Verry frustrating trying to get on structure. Have tried re setting the settings under trails and routes to one second from auto but it didn't help much. I've had several 500 and 300 series lowrance gps with no problems. Any suggestions on speeding this up ..its taking 10 to 15 mintues to get on a piece of structure and im over it already!! On the flip side the fish finder is the best i've ever seen...

Make sure the unit has the latest 3.5 software, also you running navionics mapping card?

Why do differant maps make a differance?...And where exactly do you go to increase the gps speed on a HDS 5?..I have the Lowrance map and the navionics . ..Is one better then the other? Thanks

I'm not sure why but on my previous 500 and 300 series lowrance units adding a mapping card did slow down the unit. On the HD i went into trails waypoints into settings and changed it from auto to 1 second it seemed to help a little but overall the gps on the HD is slower than previous models. I've posted on several boards and many folks have commented that their HD is very slow to react to boat movements. It is driving me insane.. its hard to get on a single tree top in open water with it like it is. Jason can you check your pm when you get a chance?

The LGC-4000 outputs at a rate of 5 Hz as the internal antenna will only output a 1 Hz giving the external antenna a faster refresh rate.

Fisher,
It would help Jason to know what settings you have chosen. Like if your using the internal antenna or an external puck Ect, also be sure your waas is not highlighted. Jason does not stick around, he has too many sites to cover. So any info will speed things up for both of you.

what hds unit do you have? also when you run a navionics mapping card in the hds unit, it's slow the mapping down/the processor because of all the information on high gig card.

When using the 4000 antenna and the map built into the units the boat icon refreshes at the faster rate but the map screen won't keep up. This is supposed to be corrected in a future software update.

When using navionics maps the map screen will keep up with the boat icon.

When using the 4000 with LCX units the map screen updates so fast you can't keep up with it.

I gotta LCX27 sitting in the corner collecting dust. Might hook it up and use it for a gps.

When slow trolling and using HDS insight maps, I have no problems hitting targets. Dead on. If I get below .2 mph, there seems to be a map lag. This could be the refresh though. I dunno. I ain't used it much on the water.

Besides, I got my Garmin.

I have lots of "couch time" with the HDS8. I know how to use the buttons now.:)

I have been complaining to a Lowrance tech about the slow refresh since I had my HDS units. Every update helps a little. He says they have to do it a little at a time.

Until they get it totally fixed I will keep an older unit for GPS.

Jason I have the HDS 5 unit , i'm running it on the internal antena . I 'm using it as it came from the factory have not put my map cards in it yet. I checked the soft ware and it is the 3.0 i plan to upload the 3.5 like you suggested today and try it. Also someone emailed me and said to make sure the antena was set to internal I have read the manual cover to cover twice and went through this unit as well as i know how and can't find were to set the antena from internal to external according to the emailer there is an auto , internal and external and the unit searches for the best antena. This searching may slow it down according to him?? Thanks for you input and i'll repost soon as i try it.

If the so called "slow processor" is the problem, then why does a high speed receiver seem to (LCG-4000) improve the screen refresh problem? Seems to me that this would require more real time from the processor to keep up with more info from the faster receiver. Wrong answer.

Ive got a small issue, but refresh rates from the internal antenna has not been a one. Like Beagle man says, you can go by a bridge, or under power lines on mine as well and the triangle and the screen is "rat" there as Beagle says.lol I have problems getting the time and the date to display on my screen. Also, when my hds7 and hds8 are linked together as they always are, I can only see the water temperature at one display.Have never seen on both units with both running since I linked them. My units were purchased in feb of this year. I got a watch on my arm for the time and if I want to see water temperature, I just look at the other unit.

Refresh rate is every second with internal antenna based on the info I got from Lowrance tech, but a lot of this info is based on the knowledge of the tech. I prefer to read it in a book rather than by phone call if you get my jest. Ocassionally my map will jump, but does not affect the accuracy of my gps. It is dead on.

This is not a problem with map accuracy, it is screen refresh rate. Most of the time I am not concerned about my location in relation to map, i am trying to get to a waypoint.

oh ok on the not the map, I thought the map and way point gps were the same, when I pull up to a brush pile or old foundation it is dead on and not 1 minute late on either one of the lowrances, I just cant believe the lowrance you have is that slow, must be something wrong with it, and I believe it can be fixed. to many out there to have this kind of problem and not be addressed and fixed, good luck and hope you get it fixed asap.

If I may jump in here maybe to give you a faster response and second opinion. I was able to see the 7&8 side beside before I had purchased. The 8 is a larger screen with the additional windows, and extra card slot. From my stand point I went with the 8s because I am always changing something, and with the buttons at the bottom made things so much easier. Just about all the different setting you might want to change are at the bottom of the screen. With the 7 you have to go into the menu and start pushing and also trying to remember which buttons for what. If you are more of an auto guy or dont change often, the 7 might be a good choice for you($$$$). If you are thinking of the 8 for using the 4 windows at once (say at the console)--the 8 is adequate, but in this instance the 10 would be alot better to see. Way too much info in small areas.
I love my 8s and just to highlight, 8s are so much more user friendly and alot easier to see.

yikes I like the 7 better, but I am learning the 8 more and more, I reset to factory default and got all the junk I messed up and it is looking better and better, I do really like the 7 I guess cause I use it the most, it is on the front and I watch it most all the time while jigging.
