Lake Hefner 2010
I finally got a chance to hit Hefner today about 2:30 and fished until dark. Caught about 40 crappie and was able to keep about 10. All of them were in about 15ft of water and I was using a white curly grub with a chart. tail. For being about 10 minute from the house I don't think it was too bad.
-
was you fishing from a boat ? thanks sam
-
no, I fish from the bank unless one of my buddies get his boat out. Caught all from the bank
-
Thanks for the report, I may have to go and try it out.
-
I kept five more yesterday and three nice sandies before the front shut them down where I was.
-
Got to go two more times since last report. Cleaned 13 on Sunday eve and just went for fun last night. Both times were the same as before.
-
Cleaned another 15 today from heffie, took all morning but did keep them biting. Saw some guys slipcorking already, should be a good year
-
Cleaned 16 over 10" today and caught a 6.5 lb walleye. Have picture but not educated on how to upload it.
-
There's a thraed on the main board "New way to upload pics" Very easy to do. Alot simpler than using Photobucket.

Didn't get out until late morning today but did manage to get 6 keepers in the wind. Also managed another smaller walleye. Kept him too to keep him from eating any more crappie.
-
too much wind for me today i am really thinking about fort cobb
-
I went over by the harbor today to get down wind and caught a few but only one that would have kept. Let us know how you do at Cobb
-
That's a nice Walleye! I went out about a week ago in the drizzle for about an hour and had no bites. Saw a couple others like me but one fellow was slip corkin and catching a crappie about ever five to ten minutes. I've not fished Hefner before except from a boat. Guess I'm gonna have to get out there and learn how to do it this winter. Did you catch the Walleye on a Crappie grub or a larger one?
-
Ike, I was crappie fishing with a light jig and 4 lb line. She made it interesting to say the least and if my buddy hadn't gone back up for my net during the fight she would still be eating crappie. LOL.
-
Got to clean 13 10 inch plus crappie from this morning. Sure made for good eating during one of the best bedlam games I have ever seen. Also met a couple of guys that look through c.c but don't post much. Great guys that had taken their nephew fishing. Hope the jigs worked.
-
I tried to post not sure it went through but it has been a good week for me also this could be a good winter season not that it is winter yet too much wind this morning for me maybe this after noon good luck
-
way too windy at the moment for me also. I may go around by the marina and see what is in shallower water.
-

-
i went this morning fish are still biting really well.
-
how deep were the fish??????????
-
George, I went saturday and they were hanging between 12 and 20 fow. Most of the ones I have caught were very near the bottom.
-
Went out yesterday 12/24 with my Dad on Hefner. They were hitting pretty good on the Dam. We Fished for about 5 hours. I kept 20 good ones. I had a couple that were 11.5". Dad Fishes the lake much more than I do (he is really good) He probably doubled the number of fish I caught. He had one that was 13" and several that were over 11". My guess is he had 35 that he kept. We were getting them any where from 17' down to about 24' down. They liked a white and pink Jig or a darker orange color Bobby Garland. At one point the sand bass rolled in and we caught about 10 of those in about 15 minutes. It was a great day of fishing. Merry Christmas - remember to thank God for his gift to all of us "Jesus"
-
what a great day i guess i zig when i should have zag went to arcadia in door 4 dinks
-
I went slip corking on the dam Christmas day and managed to catch about 5 that would have kept before I couldn't feel my toes anymore. Managed about 12 crappie in about an hour and a half. Most were at 24'
-
I got blanked for the first time in a long time today. As I was leaving I talked to some guys that were catching crappie at 30'. I never set my cork that deep. Lesson learned.
-
Are you bank fishing or boat? What size jig are you using? Also, do you fish certain spots where there are brush, or just off the dam?
-
bp, I fish from the bank and this time of year I use a slip cork. Very little brush at Hefner but the dam at least provides some structure with the rocks.
-
Are you just throwing out? Some spot that will produce better than another?
dcam, I've done very poorly at Hefner (on the very rare occasion I fish it) and I'd love any help I could get.
-
This time of year I try to stay between the areators and the pump tower. I have been using a slip cork for the first time this year. I have had pretty good luck most of the year at Hefner but the slip cork is still pretty new to me. I know that alot of guys use it and I think I am getting better at it but time will tell. Good luck and let me know if I can help. I only get to fish on sat mornings and depending on the wind I might be at dolese for trout. Give me a pm and we'll see if we can't get a few.
-
I went to the main boat ramp by the ranger station today and the harbor and secondary launch on the Eastside are still locked in ice and supporting the gulls that are standing on it. I would say that by tomorrow the ice should be slush and a boat could launch although the main ramp is rrrrrrrrreeeeeaaaaaaaalllllllllyyyyyyyyy shallow. I would say the lake is down 5' or maybe 6'.
-
Maybe it won,t get so low we can't get our boats in i am ready sam f

I have been told that if the water continues to drop then do not expect a recharge from Canton until after the walleye rodeo in May. Canton released water early because of an OKC demand for the water and about wiped out the Rodeo hurting the economy of Canton,Okla. Time will tell on this.
-
I talked to the water dept today and the lake is 5.7' low. The canal from Overholser has, I think, 9.3 cu ft/min of flow coming in which will increase in a few days and go into Hefner. This amount is less than the evaporation rate and daily use but it will increase. I was given a site that anyone can go to and get lake and river information on approx 185 sites. I believe this are all within the State. Go to USGS Real-Time Data for Oklahoma_ Streamflow. I believe site 17 on the left hand column is the Lake Hefner site. I have not taken the time to check this. This could be helpful in the future for people to check lake elevations before leaving the house.
-
I checked the USGS Real Time Data site and it has an incredible number of sites. This is worth adding to you favorites, I think. I made a mistake on the stream flow at the canal coming from Overholser. The data SHOULD be cu ft/sec not cu ft/min.

Lake Hefner is now 7' low and dropping. The recharge from Canton is scheduled to start AFTER this year's Walleye Rodeo. I heard this from a very reliable source today so everyone just hang on it.Hands Clapping
