New vise advice ???
Looking at getting a new vise. Have seen a few I liked but most are pretty expensive. I would like to stay under $150 and closer to $100 would be great. One of them I just seen is the Griffin Odyssey Spider. Anyone have any experiance with this vise? They can be bought for around $80-$85 are rotary and has plenty of clearance for the larger in length jigs that I tie. Any other suggestions? I may make a trip to the city to a few fly shops and see some so I can put my hands on them and check them out a little better than just looking at pictures. Anything will be better than my $15 vise I started with. It does not hold to well on the larger hooks I tie.

griffin 3arp is my choice. everyone has there brand they like. there will be prolly 15 different vises on this thread before its done lol,

Best vise judged by other like the Ohio Fly tying board says the Peak is best under $150 and I have sold a good many and everyone like them. I have one too, but I also have a Renzetti Salt Water Traveler and my favorite has to be my Nor-Vise, but it's high cost and really different than any other.
Sending a PM

I'd like to have a better one, but all it would do is cut down on time, b/c you can do everything with a cheap one that you can with an expensive one.... just takes more time. If i'm not fishing, might as well take the time and save the xtra money for gas.
Once I get well off, I may change my mind though!

I have a Griffin Odyssey Spider and I like it. For the money it does all I need.

The Griffin is the one I am leaning towards. Does it hold the larger hooks well? I am sure it will hold them better than what I am using now.

ive tied up to size 1/0 in mine.

Great I tie a lot of 1/0 sickle hooks for personal use. Most guys want a #1 or #2. thanks for all of the input guys. I may try to get to a shop in Kansas City so I can see them in person before I finally decide to buy.
-
The Odyssey Spider will adjust to hold the bigger hooks also. I like #2 sickles myself and it does a good job. I don't see how I ever tied using a non-rotating vise.
-
The rotating feature is one I am looking forward to. Looks like Cabela's in Kansas City carries this vice so will have to make a trip up there. Thanks guys for all the input.

I will probibly die still tying on my Thompson A. It is got alot of age on it and has had more hooks in it that most guys have ever seen. From 6/0 muskie hooks to 16 size trout fly hooks. Us old geezers are a hard bunch to move on at times.

I use a Renzetti traveler and like it a lot. The peak rotary is a nice piece of gear also. Apex Atlas is also a good one. What I will tell you is to not buy anything until you've had your hands on several. I know you want it yesterday but you will be glad you waited. I'm not slamming the griffin in any way, but different vises are so different from each other that you owe it to yourself to take the time to educate yourself and get one that is you. I handled no less than 6 or 7 before I bought the one I have. I was surprised how smoothly some operate compared to others. Good luck in your search, keep us posted.

Skeet your absolutely right. Each vise is very different, some light and some heavy, but quality can not be replaced with a lower price and sometimes it's better to spend a bit more and get something that is made to take it and give you a life time of fun tying. I like all 3 of mine and each is very good well made high quality. For the money I don't think much is better than Peak when it comes to that. If one can afford the price of a Nor, they are just awesome, but most can't reasonably get one of them. So it comes down to hook holding and ease of use and room to work around the jaws and easy to clap the hook down.
I had a Danvise the first year I tied, but sold it after one or little less than one year. It is good for the money, but it has a lot of plastic parts, not that they will not hold up, but some people would prefer metal (me). It held the hook well and I guess the only complaint I had was the jaw area could use more room as it's a bit bulky.
I have no hook holding problems with my Nor, Peak or Renzetti. Of the 3 Peak is the lowest cost by a good bit.
Oh and they are coming out with what looks to be a very nice LED light I may have to get for my self.

I started with the old Worth Jig Tying Kit, not the greatest vise. I then went the cheap route and got a Sunrise AA vise and what a mistake!!!!!!!! Guy at work found out I tied jigs and flies and gave me a bunch of stuff and it had an old Herters #9 (copy of the Thompson A). I snapped the collet on it but used an attachment piece to keep tying with it. My daughter found a brand new Thompson A in a shop and I used that for a long time and then 4 years ago I bought a Dyna-King Kingfisher and I've used that since.

Griffin Odyssey Spider vice Will be the best 100 Bucks you ever spend. TRUST ME. I realy don't know how I tied without it.

I would go with the Griffin also.
