Shell Lake Report
I was at Shell from 2 till 7 this afternoon. caught about 75 total. 30 keepers with 1 14" slab. I was fishing a brush pile in 12' of water and a tree that's sticking out of 8' of water. The tree was producing whites at 7' deep and blacks at about 3' also a large mouth and 4 sandies. Made for a good day and will be a tasty dinner tomorrow night.

Congrats.
Sounds like a super day on the lake.

WTG, sounds like you caught a real nice mess. Bet you had a blast.
-
Yes it was. My daughter is in the kitchen frying some of 'em up right now. I'm still new to this crappie fishing but I'm learning fast.
-
Welcome Dinobot, your well on your way to more good fishing and eating.
-
Went out again yesterday with my younger brother. I really need to get a couple of clickers but rough guess we caught between 150 and 175 we both kept our limits. Most of them were small between 8 and 12" caught in 3.5 to 6' of water. We ended up with a little over 6lbs. of fillets. It was a blast the action was so hot we had to put up our minnow poles and just jig fish we couldn't keep up with 2 poles each. We were catching "em on anything with blue, white, or chartreuse but when I tied on a jig with a blue tip white body and chartreuse tail they went crazy.
-
Thanks for the reports! I have never fished Shell Lake before...is there any bank fishing access?
-
Very little bank access right around the boat ramp but you're more than welcome to tag along sometime when my brother can't make it. Always better to have 2 in the boat so we can keep more fish.
-
Great report, glad to see your taking advantage of the fall bite.
-
Great report, dinobot. It awesome when they're bitting like that!!!!
-
Awesome Dinobot! Anytime you need a "wingman" just post up here and let me know. That goes for anyone on the site, actually. If any of you ever need or want another body in the boat, let me know:):D
-
Great fishing..we also found the chartreuse tails really do their thing here at Fort Cobb Lake. Good work dinobot.

Shell is a small lake 10 minutes north west of Sand Springs. If you Take 177th west north from 412 about 2 miles then right on shell creek rd it will take you right across the dam and the boat ramp is just east of the dam. It's very easy to find on google maps. If you're ever out there on a Friday I'm the guy back towards the creek in a 10' scamp with a '46 Johnson Seahorse on the back. Oh and Penny if you're free on Fridays we'll have to get together sometime and slay some slabs. http://i675.photobucket.com/albums/v...cs/Crappie.jpg

Can you put, and will the ramp accommodate, a 20 foot bass boat on the lake?
Thanks,
Gman
-
I see big bass boats in there all the time. The water is really low right now but I haven't hit the end of the ramp yet and I launch my scamp without getting out of the truck. On a sad note I think I lost a cylinder on my johnson so my fishing may be done for the year unless I find someone willing to work on something that old.
-
The fishing was tough today. I got there about noon tried a couple spots in 18 -20 fow and caught a few dinks. Then moved back to my "honey hole" in 8 fow and found nothing so the hunt was on I started finding them in 6 to 6 1/2 fow at 1" to 6" off the bottom and a few 1' below the surface on the same trees. Wound up only catching around 50 with 20 keepers. BTW the old Johnson is alive and well I finally got time to pull the cowling off and found a loose plug wire.
-
Glad to hear nothing major wrong with the 'ol outboard and still catching fish.

You have no idea how happy I am it was nothing serious. That motor may be almost twice as old as I am but it runs good and is all I have.
-
Made it out this afternoon. Even fighting the wind I managed to catch over 50 but only 19 keepers. Glad to see they are moving back to the shallower trees makes 'em easier to find on windy days.
-
Went out to Shell with my daughter last Sunday for a few hours. She caught quite a few dinks off the intake tower. We went down the East creek arm and found some on the brush piles 5 to 6 FOW. Fish were in the top 2 to 3 feet. Most were typical dinks but there were a couple nicer ones.
-
Went out yesterday kept 20 between 8 and 13 inches threw back at least as many as I kept
-
Went out Friday surface temp was 65 so I tried shallow for most of the day found a few in 2-6 fow. On the way back to the ramp I decided to try around where the old docks used to be. Found some structure in 17-21 fow and pulled in 6 12-14" and lost 2 more that size before I could get 'em in the boat. Wound up with 12 keepers between 8-14"

dinobot...shell lake is over by sand springs right?
-
Yes, it's north west of Sand Springs. If you take the airport road it takes you around the airport then right to the dam. If you take 177th turn right on shell creek road and follow it across the dam. Lake is full of dinks but you can find some nice slabs there too. I'm usually out there on Fridays. There is a nice bait and tackle shop called woody's just a couple miles away at 209th and the highway if ya need to get anything on the way. There is a $2.00 fee for fishing the lake. If you ever make it out there and see a blue over silver 54 Lone Star aluminum v with an 82 9.9hp or 46 5hp Johnson pull up and say hi.
-
-
Hey Dinobot,
Is the $2 all that is required to launch a boat or do you also have to get a permit from the City?
-
Just the $2.00 fee there is a pay box at the ramp. It's kind of a honor system no envelopes or tags to fill out and hang you just drop your money in the box and launch. It's actually a $2.00 per person fishing fee but boat launch is included.
-
Thanks! I was over that way today on other business and when I was done, I decided to make a little detour to check it out. A good looking lake from what I could see, but the access to the ramp looked rough! I think I saw a flat bottomed boat in the bottom of that pothole! Doh
-
Yes it's alot like driving down a tulsa street. BTW that wasn't a flat bottom in that pothole it was my old 10' scamp.
-
Hooked up the boat and made it to the ramp today just a little before noon. My first time to fish Shell and I was looking forward to it.
Put in and headed up the creek on the right. Looked over the points and the shoreline real good with my Hbird 1197 and marked several pieces of brush in 8 to 20 feet of water. Started hitting those and was just overrun with dinks. When Dinobot says this lake has a lot of dinks, well, he's not kidding!!
I think I pulled 4 to 8 dinks off of ever piece of wood I marked. Some were too small to even get the jig in their mouth. All you felt was the tap-tap-tap-tap of them pecking away. The ones I caught were all in the 5 to 8 inch range.
Most came off of a 1/16th Chrome head with a white and pink Fuzzy Grub. Don't know why, but they wouldn't touch a 1/16th white jig head with a pink and white tube. Wanted the chrome and fuzzy grub combo. Later in the day, a 2 inch Slab Slayer in the Cajun Cricket color turned them on.
Never did find the keepers. It must have been their day off but I still had a good time. Water temp was 54 when I started and by 3:30 when I left, it had risen to 59.
Beautiful day on a beautiful lake! Thumbs Up
-
I didn't make it out today but will probably be there tomorrow. Next time your there when you first go around the corner from the ramp look at the bank you'll see the stairs and some poles from docks that used to be there. The docks are gone but the brushpiles under 'em are still there that's where the big ones like to hang out.
-
only managed about 40 yesterday with only 10 keepers. I could not get them to bite to save my life. fished from 30 to 1 fow and just could not find what they wanted to bite. On the sonar it looked like they were holding on the ledges going from 20+ to around 12 fow but couldn't get them to bite. Best fish was a 12 3/4" female caught by my brother.
-
Ah springtime at Shell. I fished for about 4 hours yesterday and caught about 100 dinks before I finally found where the bigger ones where hanging out. I wound up with 12 keepers before my wife and youngest daughter showed up. My youngest just wanted to run around the lake so I did very little fishing after that. It was a wonderful day on a beautiful lake.

Nice fish you got there Dino and a cute little girl! What is it about boats and little girls? Mine loves to ride around the lake as well!
Love that first pic, that dog is showing some real interest in that Crappie!
-
Anyone around shell that can tell me if the boat ramp is still outta the water? I would love to get out there but it's been too shallow to launch all summer.
-
Any reports about this lake this year?
