Anyone have problems with your Okuma line counter reels? Just got mine last week and the reels do not want to free spool. Have to work the spool back and forth to ever get it to disengage. VERY FRUSTRATING!

Check your drag setting. When they come out of the box the drag is set all the way loose and cranking the handle won't turn the spool. Once I set the drag on mine, they worked fine.
The drag works fine. When I flip the lever back to let the line out it will not free spool. Have to take my thumb and work the spool back and forth until finally it breaks free. Then if the line is not going out at a nice and constant pace the spool will sometimes hang back up and I have to work it loose again.Quote:

Mine do that, sorta. I have to roll the spool back slightly, not a big deal. You might check the little silver adjusting knob on the side.
YEP, mine do the same and I do just like Feelay said. I roll it backward with my thumb then let it go, not very smooth at all but for pulling crank's who cares. They do well for the money in my opinion.
Loosen the cast control knob on the right side behind the star drag. Not too loose though, they'll fall off and the spool will gap and let the line slip behind it......on second thought, they're crap. I'll give you $5 each just so i have some spare parts. :)

Had the same problem and started replacing them one at a time with Diawas. May cost a little more but well worth the money.
Have the same problem and no amount of adjusting helps.
Luckily I haven't had that problem. Cabelas has some on sale now for $29.99. I went to order 4 of them but they were on backorder. Anyone tried these?

Scott, Duckhunter had a whole compliment of the Cabelas he bought last year and only about 1/2 of them held up through the first year. Think he decided to sell 'em all and go with Okumas.

I have some Daiwa sealine reels I bought 20 years ago and they work like they did when they were new. I bought some of their accudepth line counters and they work great. Some times cheap means just that. For a little more money and no problems I'm happy and fishing.

If there is any tension on the line the Okuma's will not free spool. When putting out cranks make sure the bait is out of the water before you release the spool. Problem solved.
Well.....mine free spool better with the crankbait in the water the movement of the boat and the resistance of the bait pulls the line out better.

Ain't funny to me.....got to cut back on a lot of stuff so you can get that high priced stuff , Lol. I ordered two more Okumas last night. The Okumas are good reels for trolling and Northwoods sells them for half what others do. Might as well save when you can.
Folks that pay 20K for a boat, 2K for a trolling motor and 1.5K for fishfinders are idjit no googlin phewls. :)

That line clicker is irritating.
Well my problem has nothing to do with the clicker. I turned it off as soon as I took them out of the box. It seems to be something with the line counter mechanism cause on some of them you can feel it bump as you turn the handle. I will go ahead and use them at camp this weekend and hopefully they will free up with a little use. If not I might be sending them back. Just depends on how frustrated I get with them.
Well I can say I have not spent that much on any of my equipment. Have a Lowe 175 stock from the factory with whats probably the cheapest trolling motor they make. A Motor Guide 46. Added a Humingbird 525 and 2 Wally Marshall rod holders to the front that were christmas presents. Don't even have trolling rods for pulling these crank baits. Just been using my med-heavy bass and catfish rods. So I think I am doing pretty good so far.Quote:
