Is there anyway to tighten the foot petal on a minn kota maxxum trolling motor so it will hold a certain direction when you take your foot off the motor? That would be real helpful when trying to pull cranks or jigs with the trolling motor.
I am just trying to find a way to save hours on my big motor without buying a terrova and a i-pilot... I am sure I will buy one in the future but trying to get by for now...
Any ideas?

Yes. If you lay down on the deck and look just above where the cable comes into the front of the foot control, you'll see the set screw. It can be tightened to put tension on the steering cable.

I talked to a mechanic the other day and asked him if trolling with my 90hp 4 stroke yamaha could damage the engine. He said that he saw one case where the motor was "making oil". Basically it was running too cold and would not burn off all the gas and atmospheric moisture and the gas was leaking back into the oil. This in term would decrease the viscousity of the oil and mess up the motor. So he didn't recommend trolling all the time with my big motor. I never heard of that before.. Has anyone had this problem or would this be a real rare occurance?

Have same problem and can't find a tension screw anywhere.
Yep, real possibility. Of course, to fight this, you can run the DD out of it for a bit on the way back in. It'd be a good idea to change your oil at twice the intervel recommended as well and be extra careful not to overfill it. Be a good idea to change the lower unit oil at the same time.

Not sure on MG, as I don't use low rent stuff to fish with. :) But it is there. Seems I remember the tension screw is located under the head on MG's, but that's a WAG more than a memory.

Thanks. Just called the guy and he explained how to do it. Pretty much have to take everything out of the head to get to what you have to adjust and them hope you know how and are able to get it all back together. Not what I wanted to hear! Should have upgraded to a better TM when I bought the boat.

Well....there ya go...You gots your choice....1, 2 or 3 bat-trees. But only one offering delivery, installation and on the water testing. Personally, I'd go with curtain #2, but that's just me.

DG, I use the Ring Free and also the Marine Stabil. I use it everytine I put gas in the boat........never had a problem with it doing the making oil thing and never had a problem with the ethenol. I do check my oil though before every fishing trip. The Troll a Matic trolling plate is great because I can troll at a slower speed with my rpm's up a little and that is a good thing.
I've alway run Sea Foam in mine. Went to Wal-Mart last night and decided I'd pick up a spare can. Some of a.............dang. $9 bucks a can. Ouchie... Might have to find me a place to get it in the 5 gallon cans. Think the last time I bought some it was $6 and I thought that was bad high.

Trying to pull crankbaits with a non-auto pilot TM has been a frustrating issue for years. I think the people that are in it for the long haul eventually go with the Terrova and use their big motor as a back up. I know before I finally gave in and bought the Terrova there would be days when everything would work fine but on a windy day fishing alone I would be throwing line away by the handfulls because of a boat that got accidentially out of control. Good luck trying to stay straight.
Yeah I know using my regular TM is not going to be that great but just thought I would use it for a while to see how it goes...
I wonder how long the terrova 55lb 12 volt trolling motor would last on the water? 4 hours? I am sure you could make it last longer with two 12 volt batteries in parallel...

My guess...3 hours with a group 27 battery. Double the batts and you'll probably see about 5.5 hours. Step to group 31s and you'll probably get close to 7. This assumes a 1.6 to 1.8 mph pull and a light boat.
